I've been playing through this game with a friend who had never played it before and it is a complete fucking chore. Yes, you can change the battle/ATB speed in the configuration menu, but there are only three settings: Slow, Slower, and Slowest. The battles take forever to load, the ATB bars are sluggish on the highest setting, and there is no "No Encounters" option in any form. We just did the Desert Palace last night and it took forever just to walk from the warp point to the ship outside because of the encounter rate and battle times.
The other thing that has been annoying is how useless Garnet and Quina are. We're at that point where Garnet can fail commands because she's mute. The whole game Quina's RNG attack only ever does less than 100 dmg and Aqua Breath misses half the time. The RNG in this game is a fucking pain in the ass. Fighting that big stone slab in the desert palace, we used Comet with Vivi. It missed half the time and sometimes would do 4000 dmg, but sometimes less than 100, if it even hit.
This game has some good characters, funny lines, and cool locales, but it is NOT fun to play. It's boring as hell and has a lot of unnecessary down time. Playing through it again as an adult, it makes me wonder what I ever saw in this game.

Final Fantasy writing is pretty much universally mediocre to shit. 7 as a story is balls, but it doesn't drop the ball as hard as 9. It utilizes the cast effectively, paces itself well, and conveys its ideas and intentions clearly. 9 is more of a mess with a lot of missed potential instead. I WOULD like Freya, Steiner and Vivi more than 7's cast, but they aren't handled as well as that game's cast. It's a real shame

Something that turns me off from finishing V is that I have to master a good 3-4 jobs before being able to stand a chance in the final dungeon, which means a lot of grinding for me since everyone only has 2 jobs mastered, except Krile who only has 1 mastered.

All in all I would place it as one of if not the best FF games made. Story and characters are only rivaled by FF6 and maybe FF4. However it has better music imo, really fantastic soundtrack. Also due to being made with the power of a ps1 vs a fukin snes, the minigames are miles ahead and the backgrounds feel much more lively.

Best part of the game is vivi and steiner, honestly a really fun duo to watch together. I almost wish the entire game was just those two as the MC

It's my favorite FF, tied with XII.

IX's only problem is the gameplay. It's one of the easiest FF games and yeah, the battles are way too slow. It only fails in the gameplay department and is otherwise 10/10

Bad plot. Bad characters. Bad character design. Bad world design. Bad game design. A massive step back in quality and innovation from FFVIII.

Basically what happened is that FFVII was a smash fucking hit. It was a huge success, critically and commercially. FFVIII came out, and it was also a huge success commercially, but rather than being unanimously praised critically, some people had minor criticisms because the game design was a big departure from what people had grown to expect from a series that had been stagnating for a long time.

As a result, Squaresoft panicked and overreacted, deciding to flush any sense of innovation down the drain and shit out a garbage nostalgia-driven game instead. FFIX was basically the "dark ages" of the series, and it set Final Fantasy down a path it never really recovered from.

It's the worst of the PSX Final Fantasies by far, and a dark stain on the series as a whole. A colossal mistake.
