As someone who has completed every 2D and 3D mario platformer.

They look wrong and they should have stylized them into the same artstyle as Mario and the princesses.
Made them a couple heads shorter and more stocky and increase Mario's size to match.

They could still be generic enough that their designs are simple and they work well as background NPCs.

It's goofy as shit, but the game seems very aware of that. a feeling i never quite got with the sonic games, it always got serious when the boss showed up to terrorize the city and sonic saves the day.

I don't think anyone really thinks mario doesn't look out of place with the real humans, I just think people have no problem with it if the game is good. Sonic Adventures problem went WAY beyond humans characters.

The creators know Mario looks weird as fuck and doesn't belong. They're using that contrast for comedic value and just referencing it constantly in general.

I have no problem with Sonic being around humans, I just don't like how Adventure turned Sonic's world to something more realistic and generic. Compare something like Station Square to pic related, another city that was in Sonic's world.
I least with Odyssey it's Mario traveling to another world that isn't supposed to be the same one the other Mario games took place in (except maybe the original DK game)

It looks really dumb. But really just I'm happy they seem to be freeing themselves from the Disney-style autism about protecting the Mario 'brand'. I mean this is coming right off the back of the last Paper Mario having nothing but different colored Toads with no character because Miyamoto said so, and now we've got a main-line Mario game with the most un-Mario shit in it since Mario's Time Machine.
Take 3d World for example. It was a good game, and I remember enjoying it, but it was so bland that I've forgotten almost everything about it except that bit when you're in the cat suit and you chase the rabbits across the field. Nothing stood out about it. I'm just glad they're taking a chance again on something we're not used to seeing that might not be well received.

In Mario I think the regular people are played for laughs, pointing the contrast between normal people and weird Mario proportions, while in adventure, 06, and the rest of the games that human appear realistic, are played for serious.

Besides, it seems that in this game Mario will explore multiple art styles, as every world uses not only different different themes, but different shading styles, so having a realistic art style while going on indie game land next world is totally plausible.
