while there are simmilar and shared systems in 1 and x, they have very different play styles

x is open world in the truest sense, there's very little that's gated by story missions, and in some cases you cannot progress the story at points if you haven't done enough side content.

1 has a very character driven plot, and while there is a lot to see and do in side content you are very much gated by story progression. each zone you enter has story content and you cannot move onto the next until you finish the story.

takahashi is calling this '2' because it will also be very story and character based like xenoblade 1.

I kind of appreciate that the MC's not-Monado is like the Monado in that it opens up and is actually a really elaborate beam sword that looks like a normal sword when inactive. I haven't played X, so I don't know if they had a weapon like that there, but I wouldn't mind if that became one of the Xenoblade series' trademarks.

I have it pre ordered. I haven't played many jrpgs before so I don't have high expectations going into it.

The good thing is that my wife is Asian at really like anime characters and all this weeb shit and so she'll probably enjoy it too.

X is just outright open world. Even though the RPG level system hinders a lot of exploration early on (you'll have trouble trying to explore areas filled with high level enemies for example), it's never impossible.

Aside from a small handful of areas that can only be accessed via flying (the quest to unlock flying becomes available at lvl30 IIRC), you can go literally anywhere in the world immediately. Well, not exactly immediately, as the game locks you into some "tutorial" missions for about the first 5 levels, but you get the idea.

Very different from XBC in which the massive world is segmented and locked behind story progression.
