In general, Battleborn had some solid core gameplay. Under ideal circumstances it was pretty fun.

Every other aspect of the game was so bad that it actively sabotaged the gameplay, though. Some of the worst systems design and implementation I've ever seen in any game. Lots of bugs, horrible performance issues, a UE3 game with no anti-cheat or report mechanisms, horribly clunky PvE farming and grinding for items that affects the PvP, absolutely abysmal matchmaking and chat/comms, unusuably bad UI that just stops working half the time, extremely grating audio/sound design, and the most visually nauseating game I've ever played.

This game was not wrongfully prosecuted - it earned all of the hate it received and then some.

The game could have amazing gameplay and the best story in history, but none of that would matter if you don't even want to look at it.

I don't have a big problem with the art itself, but they went WAY overboard with the flashy particle effects and UI overlays. Every big fight turns into a giant epilepsy-inducing clusterfuck that makes it near-impossible to understand what is going on.

This is my biggest fucking issue with the game. Everyone is obnoxious and sounds like shit. How do you fuck up a character that's a gentleman robot sniper? That's the easiest goddamn thing to write in the universe and he sounds like a gay Franz and it's just atrocious

If it was marketed well then more people would have tried it. Not everyone knows it's F2P now and the fact that they're marketing it as a "Free Trial" is reportedly causing confusion and likely hesitation for new players to try it out of fear the "trial" has a limit/end (it won't end until they pull the plug on the game entirely). The main reason people leave is because not enough people are playing. Plenty of people that try it say it's pretty good, decent, not as bad as they thought, etc. but, with nobody to play with there's no reason to continue. The playerbase has no other course but to dwindle.

The beta had huge flaws. Everyone thought it was going to be a F2P game from the beginning and going up against Overwatch was just a stupid idea. The current game is better (but still has flaws). If the free beta could attract 2mil. players a properly marketed F2P battleborn should have done better. Instead it's still a trainwreck.
