How do Metroid Prime I, II, and III hold up today? I'm considering buying the trilogy on Wii U, since they're announcing a fourth.
>>
Theyre still pretty damn good
3's a worse game than the other two for several reasons but its still pretty alright
>>
they're very good. some minor backtracking in Prime 1 endgame (unless youre following a guide and find all the relics while playing through the game), but still just a really good series. What pricepoint are you eyeballing OP? Are you shelling out the $40-50 on the virtual console? I honestly have no idea how much the digital copy costs
>>
>>380544065
How's it a "worse game" nothing it does "worse" just not in the grain that made prime 1 and 2 unique.
>>
>>380544119
It's 20 dollars according to the website for virtual console.
>>
>>380543917
The controls are a little iffy but other than they they're great. I haven't played the trilogy versions of mp1 and 2 so they might have improved the controls in that release.

By the way, what do you mean by 'hold up today'? Games aren't fruit, they don't go bad over time.
>>
>>380544119
20 bucks.
>>
>>380543917
they're just shitty halo clones, not metroid at all
>>
>>380544340
Metroid NES begs to differ.

Weird clunky controls even if the trilogy fixes it up a bit with the Wiimote

Literally everything else still top notch today.
>>
>>380544230
Worse bosses, worse exploration, worse atmosphere, worse all around.
>>
>>380545052
>Worse bosses
I'll call 3 bad for a lot of reasons but don't tell me the three hunter fights werent the tightest shit
>>
>>380544230
Boring bosses, tiny worlds, lots of enclosed areas so you can't have fun with Screw Attack despite getting it midway through the game instead of at the end, enemy design is meh, excessively linear without even the guise of free-reign exploring.
>>
3 is not a bad game. But it is the odd one out. There is no sense of isolation in the world as much as the first two. The beam system was meh even though it is closer to the original
>>
>>380544289
>>380544345
Good ass deal if you ask me.
>>
>>380547751
>tfw it was $10 when it first came out

Best deal on any video game ever.
>>
>>380543917
Haven't played 2 or 3 but my only complaints from a recent playthrough of the first is the abysmal platforming
>>
What are the best settings for mouse aim on dolpin?
>>
>>380544230
I haven't played it since release so I may be wrong but from what I remember the areas were on different planets so the map wasn't properly interconnected as a Metroid game should be.
>>
>>380545254
Gandrayda was the only boss that really held up on a replay. All the other bosses were repetitive (Mogenar, Helios) or too squishy for their mechanics to even really come into the fight (Omega Ridley, Rundas)
>>
I love all of them. The original is my favorite game of all-time and the others are great sequels all-around, even if they don't quite reach the excellence of that first game. Definitely give the, a shot.
>>
Played MP1 for the first time last year and it holds up amazingly well.
Unfortunately MP2 bored me quickly. Dropped it very early on.
MP4's announcement is making me wanna just skip it and go for 3.
>>
>>380543917
VERY well. I was surprised.
If you stop and look, you'll notice the edges, but it's so easy to get in a trance and just be absorbed by it.
I fully credit the music for that.

The only shitty parts are not necessarily tied to age, being some repetitive artifact collecting and some obnoxious enemies.
>>
>>380548891
If you didn't like 2 you're not going to like 3... 2 is great, especially when you start upgrading your suit to not take a bunch of damage in the dark world.
>>
>>380548891
>not liking MP2
that shit has the best soundtrack out of all of them though
https://youtu.be/cCeNFmqRjLY
>>
>>380548735
What aspects of MP did MP2&3 fail to live up to?
>>
Sounds good, thanks guys. Just bought it and it's downloading now. Never played any of them so this'll be fun.
>>
>>380543917
I replayed the first one like half a year ago and it's far easier than I remember but also not that great to play. Maybe finding all the items made the game go on for too long or maybe it's just not as interesting on a repeat play through. I liked 2 but haven't replayed it but despite my best efforts I couldn't stick with 3 long enough to beat it. The linear, narrative driven nature of prime 3 isn't what I'm looking for in a metroid and it's why I'm not excited for metroid 4.

Zelda was a pleasant surprise, even if it had its problems, so maybe Metroid 4 will be too
>>
>>380543917
I remember being stuck at the end of MP1 for some reason I couldn't enter some temple.

Shit sucked and I never played the game again, I Loved it though
>>
>>380549220
I didn't like the areas. They felt very generic.
I also greatly disliked the Light/Dark mechanic for both ammo and zones.
I don't think those 2 main complaints can be said about MP3
>>
Wiimote controls or Mouse and keyboard with dolphin? Both options are available to me.
>>
>>380548891
MP2 starts out rough and gets really good later on. Give it another chance, anon.
>>
>>380544065
When I played all the 3 games for the first time, MP1 & 2 were completely my favorites. But for some reason, when I did them again in the trilogy on Wii, I think that MP3 was actually holding its ground pretty well. It's just that it is very different from the first ones in a lot of aspects, but still pretty interesting.
>>
They're all amazing and the Trilogy release on Wii U is cheap and unquestionable worth every damn penny thrice over.
>>
>>380544340
Sure, the games don't change but player's standards of games do. Certain QOL changes that are near universal now that older games lack will make them feel "poorly aged." The N46 Zelda games running at 20fps and lower is a good example
>>
>>380549259
Not that poster, but 2 and 3 have this different "feel" from the first. Like, in the first Prime game, you were simply exploring this nearly desolate planet, alone, and finding out what you SHOULD be doing completely on your own. 2 and 3 usually have a general goal that you want to be doing from point to point, and it takes away some of the magic of discovering these ancient secrets and instead more about the mission. Not bad per say, just different. That said I still love all 3 games to death and I actually like Prime 3 the most, the NPCs are simple and charming and I kinda felt bad when the other hunters died.
>>
>>380549871
And I sure as fuck hope 4 is more like 1. But unfortunately Metroid has story.
>>
>>380549971
Metroid CAN have an overarching plot and do it well, see Fusion and I would say both Prime 2 and 3. It's just that it hasn't been recently, is all. Fusion in particular gives me hope that if we do have a driving plot, it won't be terrible.
>>
>>380549504
I don't think 2 isn't that strong thematicaly, but its ambience is second to none.
Reading the fate of those mummies scattered around the place gave me chills.
Getting hacked and having to reboot your suit in the technological area was also priceless.

But saying it's thematicaly weak is a very personal statement by me.
From a more objective standpoint I'd say 1 is staggeringly generic with the obligatory ice level, fire level, desert level... by far the least interesting of the trilogy in that regard.

Of course none of this has anything to do with the quality of the level design and whatnot.
>>
>>380549971
The story in all the Prime games is god-tier brah!
They just have to tell it more with the scenery and the logs instead of cutscenes and exposition. And by "more" I mean excusively.
>>
>>380543917
I would genuinely wait to see if there's trilogy remake for the Switch first. Because Metroid Prime with gyro controls from the Joycons will be utterly amazing.
>>
>>380543917
Still better than most games today, especially the case with MP1
>>
>>380550371
That sounded weird.
I meant to say that I don't think 2 is that bad thematicaly.

>>

If you played the trilogy, normal mode is actually easy mode and veteran is normal.
>>
>>380551010
upscaled so it's not blurry, but you can see the pixelation
>>
>>380544373
A classic.
>>
>>380549504
Sanctuary Fortress had amazing design but yeah the other areas could have had more to set them apart. I wish they'd pushed the dark world differences a little harder too.
>>
Does the WiiU port need a WiiChuck? Or can I use a pro controller?
>>
>>380544119
Minor (avoidable) backtracking in Prime 1.
Absolute shitloads of mandatory backtracking in Prime 2.
>>
>>380551449
Played the original
>>
>>380544230
My major gripe is that you didn't feel isolated because at any time you can just jump in your ship and hop off to a different planets. I like the idea in theory, but it just removes the urgency and feeling of "I'm trapped here".
>>
Do I have to use Wiimote and Nunchuck for 1 and 2 or can I use pro controller for the Wii U eshop version?
>>
>>380549259
MP2 didn't flow as well.
Difficulty is distracting sometimes.

The atmosphere is still about as good, which is a big part of these games.

Didn't play 3, heard it wasn't a metroidvania

3 was my favorite for a number of reasons

don't let /v/ tell you what to like OP
>>
>have to play 3 with wagglan controls

It's like Nintendo wants me to get carpal tunnel
>>
>>380553459
trilogy just gives them 3's motion controls. They're good motion controls so it's preference really

Depends on what's more important to you: Some graphical effects or the motion controls.
>>
>>380553714
>they're good motion controls

Holy fuck, no they aren't.
>>
>>380553774
>stating your opinion as if they're objective fact isn't telling people what to like
>>
>>380553832
Wait, are you telling me that the gamecube version is prettier than the Wii version?
>>
>>380543917
I and II are fucking phenomenal. I don't really like III myself. Just play them in order
>>
What's a good way to play emulated Metroid Prime 1?

Does it feel nice to use the mouse and shoot?
>>
Prime 2 kinda sucks since it was rushed to hell. Prime 1 is still a perfect game, Prime 3's pretty fucking sweet.
>>
>>380554113
oh anon
>>
the motion controls in 3 were so fucking bad. Trying to hit enemies with the wii mote was like trying to thread a needle with your feet.
>>
>>380553910

Wii version overall looks slightly nicer on modern Tv's but it had to cut some beam effects in Prime 1/2 because motion aiming made them bug out.

I wish someone would tell me how to use my mouse and keyboard or controller for the trilogy on PC already...
>>
>>380553910
some graphical effects were hardware hacks that are notoriously hard to port/emulate. They're minute things.
>>
>>380554217
answer the question, anon, and no one gets hurt
>>
>>380550938
>not mapping a controller and pretend nothing happened

Isn't it possible to use the cursor as the Wii remote?
>>
>>380544065
I played three first then one and two. I feel like I experienced this series in the best way.

Two is my least favorite
>>
>>380553459
Wii U, it's one of the only series I have played that becomes better with motion controls because you become the Samus
>>
>>380544701
Definitely agree with this. IIRC Samus cannot manually aim above/below eye level while moving in the first two. You can lock-on to enemies, which is usually how it's done. It's just kind of annoying.
