The element grid fuckery, the backtracking, the sheer cliffs and gentle slopes of difficulty curve without rhyme or reason were what you'd expect from a rookie developer not the guys who just made fucking Chrono trigger.

I've been wondering, what do you think of Chrono Cross as a whole really? Do you consider it a good Chrono game and a good game on it's own. Or a good game, but a bad Chrono game? Can't help but feel that for me it would be the latter.

I've tried to get into Cross on multiple occasions and I just can't do it. I get so fucking bored by the combat and I always feel like I'm doing shit wrong. I like the idea of having so many party members for the sake of replayability, but I just can't keep track of them all in a first playthrough.
It's a real shame though, because Cross probably has the best world and music of any JRPG. It's goddamn beautiful. It's right up there with Legend of Mana and Crystal Chronicles. Just makes you wish you could live in that world instead of the gray reality that is your current life.

Lavos was a lot more than some space parasite by the end of this game, the bastard had a contingency plan for literally everything.

That one is great, every song other then Gale is, but this is the one song in CC that always gets me.

Chrono Cross is a disassembling of Chrono Trigger, which is why the game was so controversial and disliked by many CT fans.

Trigger was a fun, light-hearted game. It never took itself seriously and the time-travel aspect was just there because the creators wanted robots and dinosaurs and medieval knights all in the same game. But if you even spend just a few moments thinking about how time travel would really work, you realize the cast of CT were screwing stuff up on a level that makes Barry Allen look cautious and responsible.

That's where Cross comes in. The game is basically an examination of the consequences of what the cast of Trigger did. Because a bunch of kids ran around changing time over and over again without thinking about what they were doing, a whole mess of paradoxes lead to the creation of a new being who wants to eat reality the same way Lavos tried to eat the planet. And Serge, as a boy who's existence was thrown into flux because of those paradoxes, is the one who has to figure out how to fix everything to save himself and the Universe.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually enjoyed Cross more than Trigger because I'm the kind of person who likes to think about shit like this. I know Chrono Cross isn't a perfect game, but it's fun for me and I love it.

How did that level-up system work anyway? No, some characters are locked out if you were to take a different route. For example near the beginning where you're going to infiltrate a mansion there are 3 routes (I believe it was?) to take to reach it. 1 route is helping Gil (who is implied to be Magus from Chrono Trigger), a bumbling buffoon of a "hero" Pierre and Nikki (?) who is a rockstar or whatever. Choosing a route and getting that chracter makes you not being able to get the other characters at all. Pierre's is the most comedic route though.

In order to get every character, you'll have to go through a minimum of three cycles, mostly because of the Viper Manor choice that >>380571075 mentioned.

Guile, Nikki, and Pierre each represent a different route into the Manor, and you can only get one of them each play-through. In addition, there's a choice you have to make after the Manor about helping Kid. If you say you'll help her, you go on a path that lets you recruit Korcha, Mel, and Razzly. If you say you don't know how to help her, you end up with Macha, Glenn, and Doc.

Then there's the issue with Harle that was mentioned earlier in this thread. In a New Game+ you can call back all the characters who were on your roster when you finished the previous run-through, but Harle joins you while you're Lynx, then leaves permanently after you change back. So she's not part of your end-game roster on the first play-through. The only way to make her permanent on the list is to make sure you get a new game+ ending while she's with you. Then she'll stay on the list of characters for all your subsequent play-throughs.

Every other character I didn't mention in this post can be obtained on the first play-through, though many of them are optional and missable. It's just a question of knowing when and how to get them.

Watched that ending and it could be interpretated that Dark Serge is losing the war, after all, the generals all manage to confront him. If they had some assassin to get in a surprise attack on him, he could be in a dire situation. While it's good that Harle and Serge are living quite a happy life together, Kid storming in and leaving it all on a cliff-hanger was quite anti-climactic. So either Dark Serge got defeated and Kid comes back to her senses, the generals are defeated which leaves Serge and Harle left to battle against Kid where they could run away from her and decide to confront Dark Serge and finish him off themselves.
