I tried to get into the saga games, especially Saga frontier 2 looks gorgeous, but they make no fucking sense to me, I am just to stupid for them, the only one I got into a bit longer was the PS2 one and I had to restart it once because I gimped myself by fighting to much, that aspect really is a bad design choice, I wasn't even grinding, I was just not avoiding every fight, but I like to explore a lot, which probably resulted in to many fights. Some extensive manual or something similar, explaining every tiny aspect for retards like me would be great. What game would you recommend to start out?

I just started Growlanser VI. My moonrune decoding skills are awful so I'm relying on an external script translation. However the plate system seems to be pretty different compared to Growlanser V. Could someone explain the changes to me? I want to get my buffs to max level asap, how do I get multiple copies of a plate? Does it matter which chain the plate is placed in?

romasaga2 is my personal favourite but I think saga frontier is a lot more popular on /v/. Ask the saga general on /vr/, they know a lot more than I do.
>>>/vr/4056863

I've heard people say to avoid romasaga2 because it's "hard" but that's not really the case, even if you 'grind' it never really becomes hard. I like the waza and formation system and I think it's super cool how you can die then build a new party specifically optimized to avenge your death. I didn't have any trouble finding stuff to do when I played through blind or anything like that. Definitely give it a try when it gets released on vita.

When kids say that certain JRPGs have aged like milk, I don't blame them one bit. The graphics in JRPGs have always been behind western games (aside from Final Fantasy) and a lot of the appeal for games like Suikoden II and Final Fantasy Tactics were due to being great games that were brand new releases at the time.

I've heard that Trails to Zero and Azure have good combat and cute girls, but the TitS games do not. Is it necessary to spend 100+ hours on the TitS games or should one skip to where the series gets good?

Is the battle system in Cold Steel better than Zero/Azure? Can I also start there?

Crossbell (Zero and Azure) are closer to the Sky games than the Cold Steel games in terms of combat. Combat doesn't really go full speed demon fun mode until cold steel

with that said, even though you COULD play the cold steel games without the sky games, I can't recommend it to someone who can't be bothered to enjoy the entire Trails storyline. It's not the same just getting one little slice of the pie.
>>
>>380534606
There's a section in the Square Snes Rpg called Live-a-Live that's caveman oriented. It's a strange game and you have to play the fan translation. But it's good.

>>380535727
- Games don't age
- I would not recommend early JRPGs like Phantasy Star 1, despite being 'impressive' for their time they are not very entertaining compared to later games
- Many of the best JRPGs of all time are from the 90s
- Most popular games are popular because of marketing. Popularity has little to do with quality.
- I've never played Suikoden, should I?

I am being dead honest, I have never played a turn based JRPG in my life, just because I never thought they would appeal to me. I am really sick of most games and feel like I need to broaden my horizons, plus I feel like experiencing a good adventure.

What is the best jrpg for a total noob to the genre? also it can't be too weeb, overly weeb artstyles really throw me off.

I want to play so many games I missed, because my last console was PS1 and before that I had snes, mega drive and nes but I was a small little kid and played beat'em ups and platformers. But I still have same old PC I had in 2009 and will be buying new one only around winter. Most games even on dolphin emulator run at 70-85% speed and I don't want to ruin the impression.
Anyways

>>
>>380538926
You should just play a bunch of final fantasy games, it's a good entry level series and they all have somewhat different gameplay, figure out what you enjoy the most (simpler game with more story like 4 or 6, more character building driven like 3 or 5, characters are heavily customizeable blank slates like 7 or 8, characters with fixed classes like 9 or 10, dynamic class change like 10-2) and move on from there to different games depending on what you liked the most

Have you tried PPSSPP? It's made with some voodoo magic so it might work even on your computer, and there are several great JRPGs on PSP.
>>
>>380539656
Chapter 3 takes place in the Nord (AKA Bored) Highlands right? That's the part people tend to enjoy least. The story should definitely pick up from here. The attack on the two armies is an important point.
>>
>>380539656
Man I've tried to play beat that game so many time. Everyone says just make it through the first game so you can play the much improved sequel. But fuck. I'm 30 hours in over the course of like two years of play and I can't see myself beating it anymore

>>
>>380537917
"JRPG" isn't truly a genre. You can't really play a JRPG to get an idea of JRPGs because they can be so different. If you're looking for an adventure JRPG that narrows it down but you still have a lot of variation from stuff like Dark Souls, Romancing Saga, Ys Oath in Felghana, Dragon Quest VIII, etc.
>>
>>380540328

Daily reminder that Trails in the Sky FC actually has more exciting story events than Trails to Zero, despite how much nipfags talk up the Crossbell game

I mean, TiTS FC has you take back the royal villa and even storm the castle in the royal capital. Liberating a hospital from mafia thugs isn't nearly as cool or fun.

Really only DQXI

I really want them to just confirm DQXI for the switch, it's all that is keeping me from buying one. Stuff like the new mario and kirby llook great but I just can't pull the trigger yet without knowing about DQXI.
>>
>>380540141
I'm pretty sure the field study after Nord, so chapter 4, and I think I was nearly done with it. I honestly just don't think it's the game for me. Like I said 30 hours over the course of two years as opposed to the 85 hours I have into Persona 5 right now over the two months since it's been out.
>>
>>380540249
I've got good news for you, then. It's not really an open world. You are still herded through corridors until you get the airship. It's just that they are arbitrary invisible walls on the world map and such.
>>
>>380540249
Here's a secret: Final Fantasy overworlds aren't open world in the modern sense of the world. You're still being herded down a path through a corridor, it's just that the corridor looks like a section of a continent. They very rarely give you multiple viable options on where to go and only VERY rarely dump you off somewhere with no directions on where to go or what to do.
>>
>>380540612
>>380540626
I suppose I need to push through then. I like the combat and the materia system is fun too. Thanks for the convincing bros
>>
>>380541213
>I like the combat
FFVII has one of the most shallow, barebones, braindead combat systems ever created. I always think it's crazy when people say they like FFVII combat while shitting on other games. Not saying that's you, but just that there are people who do that. I think they're just front-runners who only like things because of their popularity.
>>
>>380540626
If all else fails, the dots on the map will indicate to you where the major world locations are. You'll more or less always be able to tell where you're supposed to go to by looking at the closest one you haven't been to yet. You generally don't have to explore to find hidden places unlike, say, an Elder Scrolls game, at leat not until the very endgame.
>>
>>380541508
I mean it's not offensive. Like I said, I like it. But that doesn't mean it's my favorite ever. If not evidenced by my previous posts, I like boring ass vanilla rpgs and rpg systems. I don't need a fuck ton of convoluted systems and micromanagement. I just like turnbased combat with some small customization.

Grandia and Trails do turn-based the best IMO. I thought P5 was fun to play as well, and enjoyed the combat for the most part.

Yeah I'm assuming it's overrated too. I mean it's a childhood defining game for a lot of people. I had an n64 growing up so I missed all of the "all time great" rpgs on the ps1. So I don't have any of the nostalgia.

You have heard correctly, IX is a return to the more low-tech fantasy of the Nintendo era as compared to the progressively more modern worlds Square started moving towards from Final Fantasy VI until Final Fantasy VIII. Gameplay-wise it's more or less a successor to Final Fantasy IV, but like all post-V Final Fantasies it could stand to be a harder game. I used to think it was a game best played after having played most of the older games first, but honestly despite it being full of references to previous works you really don't need extensive knowledge of the franchise to enjoy it.

Although you probably would benefit from playing Final Fantasy V before playing IX so you can have some extra context on what the final boss is.
>>
Where should I go after Persona 5? It's the first JRPG I've played in years, but I'm having a blast. I'm actually kinda worried that everything else will pale in comparison, mostly production-wise. Googled a few of the ones listed in the thread and they look so... janky.
I'd prefer something this isn't so standard fantasy affair.

I'm playing Growlanser IV: Wayfarer of Time and really enjoying it. Are there other JRPGs that come close to western RPGs in terms of meaningful choices and shit?
>>
>>380545251

Yes, SMT 1 is my favorite Megaten game. SJ just feels incredibly half-baked to me. Every song sounds exactly the same, the demon co-op system makes playing Neutral completely pointless from a gameplay perspective, and it also just feels like they were afraid to make enemies as powerful as the player. In Nocturne, the enemy could fuck you up with the press turn system just as hard as you could do them, but there's nothing like that for the enemy to take advantage of in SJ so when an enemy is "strong" it just has inflated stats and spams 100% rate status ailments. The setting is underutilized as fuck, basically just a graphical thing. The sidequests are boring, they're just kill quests with nothing interesting going on and exploration quests that take you to places you were already going to go anyway. The crafting system adds grind where there doesn't need to be any, while the password system literally makes it to where if you get stuck you can password a full team of powerful, perfect demons and win any fight without even trying. There are a few good aspects: some of the designs are cool, I like the demonica, etc. but the amount of circlejerking this game gets drives me fucking bonkers when it's a strong 6/10 at best.

>The graphics in JRPGs have always been behind western games

In the good old days Japanese were not at the edge of technology, they were making cheap knockoffs of American designs (like China does now).

One such case is Dragon Quest and subsequently ALL JRPGs. In 1983 Yuji Horii and Koichi Nakamura attended a computer show in San Francisco, where they first play Wizardry. They love it, so when they go back to Japan they buy it and decide to create a game like it.

Now, the way most people tell the story paints them under a positive light. This is absolute bollocks. Basically, they ripped off Wizardry’s system, but they dumbed it down (some people claim this to be a stroke of genius, FFS) and Ultima’s overhead view. They pretty much ripped everything off Wizardry and Ultima III (especially that): combat system, random encounters, maps, you name it. The difference was the graphics style, which was created by Akira-the cliché of Anime crapness-Toriyama. All in all a substandard, cheap, knockoff.

All JRPGs since then cloned a clone. But computer RPGs moved significantly since 1983 (a date the Japanese are still stuck too). Garriott introduced morality and a keyword based conversation system in the next Ultima instalment and removed random encounters. Computer RPGs moved away from the usual dungeon crawl hack’n’slash towards the attempt to allow players to role play. They were given moral choices, freedom to explore and act as they pleased, etc. Combat systems evolved as well, with some games moving towards real time combat. Other games introduced NPCs who were acting independently through the game world (like Wizardry VII).

All these developments were lost to the Japanese, who continue to make Wizardry III and Ultima III clones to this day.

I never understood Final Fantasy fans.

Inevitably, there is always a JRPG with funner gameplay on the same console that the new FF title has been released on. Do Final Fantasy fans play other RPGs? What happens when they inevitably play an RPG that has a combat system that is more intuitive and/or more involving leading to being more fun? If you are you a fan because of the stories and the teeny bop stuff I would say read a real novel with substance but its obvious you play the game to simply feel like you have some sort of part/control of the story. Are you a fan because of the art style/graphics/cut scenes? Then you're just a shallow faggot.

I guess, but there's almost always a 'best' answer or 'best' solution, and even though most responses affect the MC's personality the MC's personality rarely matters.

I was fucking traumatized when my familiar died, the fact that I could have saved her if I was more observant made it 100x worse

Hell futuristic RPGs in general that don't mix swords and sorcery.

>>
>>380545851
Coop is useful but its not the end be all in SJ since later bosses start punishing you for relying too heavily on just one alignment. Neutral kind of bites since there's locked weapons for Law/Chaos but if you do it right then you can equip the weapons and manipulate your alignment to still have access to it as long as you don't unequip said weapon.
>>
>>380544379
Try with any character BUT Lute or Riki. Blue could be a good choice due to having a bit more freedom in going where you want to, and a reason to search for magic, and a much more easily definable objective.
>>380529439
Which ones have you actually played?
> I had to restart it once because I gimped myself by fighting to much, that aspect really is a bad design choice
They aren't built for novices of the genre, it is actually a great mechanic when you keep in mind everything else in the game. It prevents people from grinding, you can have consistently difficult encounters no matter where you wander off to rather than accidentally going to a hard area, somehow pass it, then go to another area and stomp it, and as always due to character growth mechanics the harder the enemies the better the stat gains and chance to learn skills.

I had to restart Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song about three to five times before I got the ball rolling. You have to be willing to restart some of these games
>>
>>380546824
>I never understood Final Fantasy fans
The games are pretty decent and people like them. Fairly easy to understand. The combat is fairly simple but generally has enough depth to range from "grind levels and mash A" to "minmax like an autist and take down some insane endgame bosses". How much people enjoy the story/presentation depends on the person and game. People can like things that you don't.

a weeb or weaboo is a non-japanese person who worships japan to an extreme point, how can a japanese game made in japan by japanese people for a japanese audience be "weeb"? A weeb game is something like HuniePop, where western artists try to ape more modern anime styles. What you are thinking about is the "moe" artstyle prevalent in modern anime or "ecchi" which is basically softcore porn, however weebs existed long before anime started looking like hyperdimension neptunia, which I also happen to dislike and I can't understand why you took my comment as a defence of that specific game, you are just attributing random terms to things you dislike in a way that has no real meaning

small japanese companies do not give a shit about their market outside of japan, hdn is certainly targeted at otakus but the fact that weebs in the west, where it is distributed by different companies and not by the one that produced them, like it is incidental, in the 90s weebs were all over berserk but I doubt you'd call berserk a 'weeb' manga, it would be like calling who framed roger rabbit "furry bait" just because degenerate furries fap to roger rabbit.
Even Persona couldn't really be called a weeb game since Atlus and Atlus USA have split into two different companies long ago, so those games aren't made for the western market in mind. For a game to be "weeb" it would need to be produced specifically for the western market, but being based on japanese worship/stereotypes, again like huniepop or hate plus or whatever. Calling me names won't change the fact that you are using the wrong term as a blanket term for "thing I don't like" and then somehow attributing the inclinations of the game itself to its incidental western fanbase, for example there's quite a sizeable fanbase for the lolis in the mega man games but I never heard anyone call mega man a "pedo game"

Probably Chrono Trigger, but a warning: it is one of the best JRPGs if not the best. If you play CT right before playing any other JRPG you will always compare other JRPGs to CT and it will make them look less good by comparison. I would not recommend playing CT first unless you want to just play ONE JRPG in your life and be done with the rest.

Depends, what do like in your jrpgs? I find BoFIV to be one of the greatest jrpgs ever made, it may be my personal favorite game ever made in all honesty, but more seem to like BoFIII. Both are excellent games though worth your time.

>>380549445
Not him or that other guy but you only really play the Sky games if you're willing to wait it out for the story.

Crossbell and CS have additions that make the quartz systems less clunky, particularly the last one where you're practically free to do whatever you want with it.

FC honestly isn't a very good game and you only really play it because you want to know the story before getting into SC.
>>
>>380550309
Me too. I don't mind a good argument but people are just throwing around insults today rather than arguing their points.

Want to talk about something?
>>
>>380550197
Honestly music is a big factor for me, shit like Golden Sun will always be memorable for the soundtrack, but also having an interesting narrative (not just Trails style animu tropes) and clear goals for the characters all helps,

I have a mixed opinion on gameplay itself, I've played enough shitty RPGmaker games to not be too bothered if it's mediocre, as long as it doesn't drag on forever (Again, Trails) but I prefer to have a system where your decisions and choices matter more than RNG and grinding (the latter two being more suitable as tools for the inept than the prime mechanic for the gameplay)
>>
>>380550461
Do they ever add terrain/obstacles in the battlefields so you actually have to move around rather than standing at the start to nuke the enemy?
In later games do you normally stick with the same orbment setup for the whole game or do you adjust your setup for each boss fight?
>>
>>380550647
I think you're underselling Trails a bit but I can understand why you wouldn't like it because I didn't like FC initially and it wasn't until when I decided to sit down and get to the industrial town that I started liking it.
>>
>>380550461

I genuinely enjoyed FC more than SC. The store was way more down to earth, rather than the team rocket plot of the week shit SC did for its first half.
>>
>>380526572
Rebought Chrono Trigger for my Super Nintendo, and replaying it for the first time in probably 8 years.

I'm at the very end. I forgot about a lot of those side quests, and I missed Marle's ultimate weapon. Oh well. This game is really easy too, I remember struggling back in the day, but I don't know why.
>>
>>380550647
Just curious, are you referring to some specific games when you complain about RNG?
>>
>>380550330
Just list the ones you enjoy the most from the ones you have played. Hell I wouldn't mind if my top nine gets shifted a bit if I find a game good enough for it. Sometimes I find certain games weaker than my other top picks.
>>
>>380550859
They start mixing it up a bit in the later games since bosses start having more tricks up their than just being boring hp sponges. For example one of the bosses in the later games has the ability to teleport your team around the map and spawn mooks on top of them.

Later games also introduce a master quartz system which gives characters special bonuses so for example if you give a character say the force quartz, that character would be more inclined to use crafts and build themselves around that than say someone who took one that buffed their water spells.
>>
>>380550913
I've just finished the whole game today anon, it's utter garbage with the writing just being a long list of tropes and cliches, it dragged things out far too long

>Wait, Kloe is the princess!? WHO KNEW?
>Oh by the way the two main characters have feelings for each other!
>Hey did we hint at Joshua's secret past yet? Yea? Well let's do it again anyway!
>This totally not-the-prince-of-the-empire is such a goofy guy isn't he? And the characters are just totally annoyed by him, lets do this shit at least five more times! xD
>Woah this guy is making a reasonable point not to involve an untrained civilian in a dangerous situation, but obviously the retarded MC is going to argue muh fee-fees and she's coming along anyway because duh, she's a party member
>Let's not forget to do THAT again as well in the next chapter

Still mad, but mostly at myself for telling myself to stick with it until the end.

The writing or characters didn't get better, they stayed the same one-dimensional cliches, the combat didn't open up or get more interesting, it stayed "stand back and spam aoe arts until the enemy is dead, use SP in case of emergency"
>>
>>380551324
hmm i guess so far dragon quest 7, yokai watch, smt 3 and smt 4

My biggest problem with FC is that a lot of it feels like filler to pad out the game. Especially Kloe's chapter. Like it makes for good backstory or an anime but not for particularly interesting game especially one that's as slow as FC.

I think you may like BoFIII more, though as I said both should be played. BoFIII is a bit more "standard", and I don't mean that in a bad way at all. BoFIII has a more simple plot and a slower pace. Personally I kind of find the pacing to be too slow but even then it is still a solid game. The battle system is pretty simple but works well enough. It is a overall pretty easy game so you should be fine.

BoFIV is much more unique. It has a large influence from Chinese, Korean, and Japanese culture which plays a big part overall in the setting and story. It moves at a better pace and things are constantly happening. I find the battle system to be one of the greatest I have ever seen. How it works is you have a front and back row of characters, three i each. You can swap who is in each row during anyone's turn meaning in battle everyone will see use. Not only this but characters can combo their magic and special moves. For example, if you have someone use a fire spell and then follow with a wind spell the wind spell will become a more powerful spell. Sadly it is pretty easy syill but still a lot of fun.

Overall BoFIII is better if you want something a bit more traditional and simple and BoFIV if you want something more grand and unique.

Seems like you haven't played many JRPGs, why did you pick those games in particular?
>>
>>380551638
There are so many games, so many genres, and JRPG's tend to be long so it is understandable when people haven't got that many games under their belt, especially if they just get into a genre.
>>
>>380551164
No, I dislike the over-reliance JRPGs tend to have on the concept in general. It's fine as long as you have tools to manage and control it, or if it's merely a limiting factor you have to work around.

For example the way components and traits work in Atelier Firis, both are random aspects of materials you find but by cleverly combining things and using x for y and y for z and so on, or simply investing more of your days into collecting (hopefully) better materials is a trade-off and something you can work with.
>>
>>380551623

Isaac in Golden Sun has more of a personality than most characters in FC, they don't have personalities, they have stereotypes.

DQ1 is simple, short, and fun. Play the GBC version (1+2). If you have no intention of playing the whole series, 5 is objectively the best one. People might respond to this post arguing with me on that, but it's true. 5 is the best DQ game. 4 comes close, though. Also, play the PS2 version.

Play DQIII or DQV. While neither is my overall favorite, that would be VII, those two embody the jrpg genre more then any other game. Both are excellent games. Not him but as a die hard GS fan, you're pushing it if you think that he has more of a personality than anyone in FC. He doesn't talk for the entirety of the first game and probably has like four or five paragraphs worth of lines in 2 and DD combined.

The only character that Isaac is better than is Zin/Zane because he has nothing to him besides being that older guy who knows your dad until the sequel.

There is no reliable list of good DS games (especially not the one recommendation image /v/ made a decade ago). Neither of those games would be there if there was.
I'd be up for making a better recommendation list. However it would be important to keep bad games off the list. Here's some games to consider:

Games that are great but better on 3ds:
- SMT Devil Survivor games
- Etrian Odyssey
- SMT SJ (presumably)
- Radiant Historia (presumably)

Great DS games
- SaGa remakes
- TWEWY

Good DS games
- Fire Emblem 12
- Valkyrie Profile CotP
- Pokemon
- Front Mission (port)

Haven't played but heard good things
- Dark spire / knights in knightmare
- atelier annie
- infinite space

>>
>>380552897
I mentioned Isaac specifically because of what happens with him during the story, despite the presentation thereof being sparse.

Isaac as a character grows and develops even in those few moments, and he reacts to the world and character interactions around him, rather than just repeating the same stereotypical actions in every context.

Meanwhile, everything Estelle does is utterly predictable, before even closing the dialogue box I know exactly how she's going to respond to it, and this goes for pretty much every character in FC, their interactions are stiff, wooden and stereotypical, and the characters choices and actions don't change or are even remotely affected by the circumstance they're in.

Agate gets hurt covering for someone else's mistake, but no, let's not admonish this person and correct her (very, painfully clearly wrong) behavior, "we have to be nice and forgiving :^)"

"Oh, this person who is unqualified and really isn't someone we can afford to endanger wants to come along with us? Any sensible individual would know to refuse, but we'll accept because she cares so much about the situation and this means she has plot armor so it's fine :^)"

Dumb shit like that, these are not characters, they do not interact with their circumstances, they just act out their stereotype. Garbage writing.

>>
>>380551996
I can agree with that, for example it's no fun when a boss has an instant-win button and you have to pray that they don't press it.

One of my favourite series is the Fire Emblem series and it often gets criticized for being RNG-dependent but actually most of the fun comes from thinking up RNG-proof tactics that utilize the game mechanics to the fullest, and while some people savescum in Fire Emblem it's normal for others to play through an entire game without resetting. So don't get scared away from those games because of RNG complaints.

I think RNG is fine in some cases, for example in SaGa the skill sparking is sometimes RNG dependent but that's part of the fun, SaGa is a different adventure every time you play it and so you'll be planning out different tactics depending on what characters and abilities and quests you happen to come across.

>Isaac as a character grows
He doesn't. He's the same level headed, well meaning guy who his friends respect and can count on from start to finish.

Sure he was going on a quest to save the world using only the fractured information that the Wise One gave him early on to stop the lighting of the lighthouse but as soon as Felix tells him that they need to light the lighthouses to save the world then he and his friends go why didn't you tell us sooner. They don't even show any sense of doubt like say that Felix might be bullshitting them or anything.

Felix and Jenna are the ones who grew as characters across the two games. Piers had a little growth to some extent and the others especially Ivan don't really change.

>fucking SPELL GRINDING, I only got Cure maxed out, everything else was level 4-8 even with a ton of grinding
>random spikes in the amount of damage enemies dish out, one dealing FIVE THOUSAND DAMAGE in an area where everything else was hitting for 300 or so HP
>encounters out the ass
>had to save after every encounter before moving on at times, otherwise i'd chance entering a 5+ minute fight against 8 Imps that spam Confuse XVI on my entire team

>running from fights straight up never worked, even when against the 6HP enemies at the beginning of the game

I can appreciate how they tried new things going from 1 to 2, but much of it just didn't work out. I maintain that it is impossible to get any spell not named Cure up to level 16 without grinding for like 20 hours each spell. It just left me wishing i was playing 4 or 6.

You can trivialize FE12 with well placed forges as well. A forged Dragonpike/Wyrmslayer will make mincemeat of the most dangerous enemy type in the game and unlike 11, the game gives you 8 free chapters to grind up exp on Chris/Kris and their loser friends.

Yeah. Play 1-3.

The transition from 1 to 2 is especially jarring in terms of quality. Very nice continuous storyline that is based around world-building, politics, item-collecting, etc. Has a fun battle system too that can become kinda brainless late game except for bosses but most JRPG's are like that.

Partners in Time is one of the absolute worst JRPGs I've (>>380553641) ever played, I hated it so much that I sold it to gamestop. >>
>>380555030
Its a little late because you already finished the game but FFII's enemies have an inbuilt enemy rank system that makes it harder for you to get stats off of them if you're too high relatively. If you just play the game like a normal rpg, you'll find that your characters grow at a consistent rate and you're never pushed into grinding.

One other thing that a lot of people miss out on is the fact that shields make a larger difference for durability than grinding HP. A lot of enemies have ailment on hit or hp scaling attacks so the best defense is simply not getting hit.

Cautiously optimistic about Xenoblade 2. I love the soundtrack but I'm not so sure I care about the premise, the characters and the changes to the combat system. I was thinking of playing Xenogears. What's the best Playstation emulator out there?

Isaac had plenty of reason to hand the reigns to Felix though, he trusts Kraden and is presented with plenty of proof throughout his travels that things are not as he initially suspected, the fact that he's willing to change his course shows that he's grown in his travels and heeded the things he experienced.

It's also in a lot of small interactions, much of Isaac's character needs to be inferred from interactions the rest of the cast have with him, and while the characters don't greatly change, their behavior is affected by the situation they're involved in, they don't just do the exact same thing regardless of circumstance.

In many moments throughout the game the cast will reference things that have happened to them, people they spoke to and lessons they've learned, in Trails it's never more than "oh I know him" or "oh I remember you" with it even being a running gag that Estelle is a klutz so she forgets "tehe :^)"

Ivan does get the shit end of the stick, and I doubt you'll find many people who don't consider him the worst party member in Golden Sun.
>>
>>380555501
So what the fuck was up with the enemies doing retarded amounts of damage? Stuff like the Death Knights in Pandaemonium would hit Guy for 5500 damage where nothing else in the entire game would hit for anywhere near as much, save the final boss. Even the final boss's spells did basically nothing, but his physical attack hit for 6000+. I never used shields because I could just dual wield instead

Also, what about the running? Is it supposed to just not work?
>>
>>380555472
Bravely Default has a literal fast forward button and I spent that whole game with battle animations at like 4x speed and it was 10/10. Polarizing narrative but pretty god tier in my opinion
>>
>>380555030
I don't think the game was designed for you to max out your spell, none-the-less all the spells you give to your caster. That is like aiming for level 99. You could get by with a lot less.

Though it seems like it was mostly on you for the grinding aspect.

>>380555145
You'll definitely want a forged bow early on and a dragon slaying weapon later in FE12, yes, but those are just a couple of many tools you need to rely on to get through the game. Even with dragon slaying weapons, enemies in FE12 are threatening enough that you need to put a lot more thought into how you approach them. Whereas in FE11 Caeda can basically solo the game with her wing spear alone.
The prologue sucks but it doesn't make FE12 easy at all.
>>
Just finishing my playthrough of Tales of Berseria. Did a little odd things in it, but they've turned out better than I expected.
>>
>>380555897
I also made things harder on myself because i never found the Blood Sword or Masamune. As for spell grinding, i felt like i had to do it to make Ultima worth anything, it was basically all i used with Maria in the final dungeon. Even at level 10, it basically never even broke 1000 against the final boss, and he would just heal up off his physicals. That fight went on for like 30 minutes.

My main gripe with BD was that I figured out much of the main plot after the first crystal (due to Airy being too much of an obvious archetype) and after breaking the first crystal you can (and I had no reason not to, vamp had even confirmed everything I had already figured out) it turns out that's the bad ending and you're just supposed to hang back and go along with it (breaking the crystal as soon as I did also had the characters make references to events that hadn't even happened, which was confusing)
>>
>>380556432
To be honest parts of it grew on me. I really disliked Rokurou in the beginning but once we got more characters he got better. Especially after Eizen joined. Though I geared both of them like fucking retards.

Nah mate, Isaac's character is pretty easy to get that he's the gel that holds the generally an idiot Garet, the wimpy nerd Ivan and the nice girl Mia together and balances them out. He's also pretty level headed.

However, while Isaac did have logical reasons to follow up Felix in the end, the talk in Contigo was very rushed and Isaac's team just swallowed everything Felix said without even a peep besides why didn't you tell us sooner. I didn't expect them to get into a brawl over it but it was really underwhelming after all of the hype that GS2 had all game long about what would happen when the two casts meet. Granted its as you said that the situation didn't really call for it since they just found out that the world was going to freeze over.

In FC's defense, however its basically only half of the story and characters who didn't have much going for them besides being one note like Estelle start doing more with themselves in the sequel. Except for Tita who unfortunately is the Ivan of the Trails cast.

>>380555778
Dual wielding is stronger in the beginning but after a while with proper buffs its more of a handicap than anything because you'll hit for 9999 anyway and all you're doing is crippling your evasion stat which doesn't help when literally every single zombie or annoying endgame boss has ailment on hit or my physical attacks scale with his max hp.
>>
>>380556564
I didn't figure it out until like the 2nd or 3rd cycle, but it blew my mind. I loved how much they hinted at it, so the whole game really felt like some meta puzzle the player was supposed to solve without ever telling you there was a puzzle. Just realizing something is fishy and it has to do with Airy, and Ringabell I guess. When you load up that title screen and Flying Fairy fades out the F's to lying airy I lost it, that's just too cool.

Plus having your face show up behind the final boss was awesome

I get why it's polarizing but it just hit all the right notes for me
>>
>>380556224
Blood Sword is actually really easy to get if you talk to everyone in the home base/town. Ultima also scales with basically every single skill you have so its unfortunately a worthless spell in 2 since IIRC it doesn't even hit that hard even if you do grind for it.

Eizen is such a bro, dude could have been his own protagonist. Great balance between serious, melodramatic Pirates code "muh curse" stuff with lighthearted moments of him being a history autists and writing letters to his sister. Was really fun to play too. Probably my favorite character this year
>>
>>380556976
You're right there, the presentation and meta narrative of BD are really well done, it's just that I personally recognized Airy for what she was almost immediately (she was too pushy while never actually helping, and her origin was too enigmatic for her not to have been a tool of the bad guy)

Title card was some cool shit though, just sad that there wasn't more for those that did figure it out early and in fact it kind of broke the game.

Speaking of which, I ended up in a hilarious situation where I'd beaten the secret boss before the final boss and my broken strategy meant that I had one character with dual shields and something like 13k+ health, so when the final boss used it's guaranteed party wipe where only the main character lives on 1 health, my tank was still standing and the rest of my party auto-revived, which made the whole narrative they were presenting feel rather pointless.
>>
>>380556886

>Engaging well written storyline
Well it's not bad by any means, just a standard kingdom Vs kingdom Vs kingdom with a villain that /v/ seems to love even though he's just ridiculously over the top evil and crazy and just wants to kill everyone.
>Well developed characters
There's 108(iirc) of them, no they are not well developed and majority of them are literally blank slates. There's probably 5-10 that have any decent development and even then it's nothing great compared to other games.
>Gameplay has a lot of depth but is still fast paced
Depth? Somewhat, rune slotting among other things which is also stupid because the vast majority have less slots than a select few so unless you like them for whatever reason (their sprite/scarce dialogue) there's no point in using the less slot characters and fast paced? Yep it sure is because 90% of the time you will be selecting the auto battle button which will make everyone auto attack because other than needing to heal in some boss fights, auto attacking is all you ever have to do, especially when you get some of the attack buff runes.

Srsly some fans will prob jump on my back here but don't listen to their bullshit, give it a shot yourself, maybe you will love it but everything I've said I honestly believe and would back up.. it's seriously a mediocre fucking game and I've heard multiple people on here compare the story to game of thrones which is an utter fucking joke lol. PSX has so many better jrpgs
>>
>>380559857
It's a very generic story and cast about going on a pilgrimage to save the world, like FFX without all the crazy bullshit. It's the first 3D game in the series so it's very basic in the battle system. It's a fine game but I really don't think it does anything better than any other game in the series and it's pretty low on my list of all 16 mainline titles.

To be fair a lot of people love it so maybe I'm a weirdo

Medieval/Fantasy fully developed society that slowly reveals over the course of the game/series that the end of the world had already happened long, long ago and the world has recovered and forgotten it entirely.
I love this setting and wish I could find it outside of the 3rd 7th Dragon, Shining Force, and Etrian Odyssey. Too many are just either plain magic fantasy, futuristic fantasy, modern, or in the middle of the dystopian phase of the "old" society.
>>
>>380563219
DQVI is quite a mess. It is isn't as highly regarded as the others for good reasons. The fact that VII took the job system and made it so much better along with in general be much better doesn't help either.

DQVI always just seemed so weirdly uninspired to me. Even the characters feel likecTpriyama made them in five minutes.
>>
>>380564720
None of the Final Fantasy games are essential and they can be played in any order except for games that are direct sequels (e.g. FFX-2); each game is a separate story (except the direct sequels which are pretty easy to identify from the name).

Generally when asking for recommendations it's a good idea to post what other games, JRPG or not, that you've played and enjoyed. That way someone can suggest something that you will like.
>>
>>380564795
Not medieval but a game that does this is (obvious spoilers so I guess it's up to you) Mother 3. At the end it is revealed that humanity destroyed itself eventually and your village are people who escaped and erased your memories.

Don't worry about the story aspect, with the exception of direct sequels [say, X-2, which is a sequel to X] they're all completely unconnected settings and stories. They all share a similar combat system, but tend to have radically different character growth systems from game to game. Some have more linear character progression, some have more free-form character building. Personaly, for a beginner I would recommend almost any of the first ten games but, but especially IV, V, VI, VII or IX. Although a case can be made for basically every single game in the franchise, with a handful of exceptions: XI and XIV are MMOs, so obviously not those. II is has a very "experimental" level up system, you probably don't want it as your first taste of the franchise. And XIII and XV are ridiculously divisive games and radically different from the other entries.

>>380565326
PS1 1 is the definitive version of the game, PSP 2 is the definitive version of that game, GBA IV sucks because of an ATB bug, DS 4 is arguably the best version of the game BUT you should play the original first, GBA V is the definitive version, GBA VI sucks because its extra content is terrible and the visual/audio quality were wrecked so bad that it's not worth it even with patches. III's remake is iffy because it adjusted the game to favor certain classes way too much due to both new(and broken) skills and encounters changing to favor few, big bulky enemies instead of large crowds. Not a bad remake, but there are arguments for playing the original.

I see. I should really play that series someday, was always a sega kid so missed out on a lot of nintendo stuff.
I should elaborate more on the setting I meant though.
Specifically, the world is fine. No issues, it has recovered entirely. They may not even remember the end of the old world ever happening. It doesn't have to specifically be medieval, but it helps. I just like seeing the world after the ever-popular dystopian setting ends, and that the world did indeed exist before.
For example, in EO, it isn't apparent until you travel so far into the depths of the Yggdrasil that you find the remains of a modern city, with the mazes taking place in plant covered skyscrapers.
Or in 7th Dragon, it isn't apparent until you go into the future...except it's the medieval village kingdom of the first game, which reveals to the player that the first game did not take place in the past or in a fantasy land, the dragons simply succeeded at exterminating all of humanity and life in general in the present and destroyed the world, leaving it to slowly regrow.

FF1 is best on PS1 (hard mode)
FF2 is best on PSP
FF3 both NES and 3D remake are good in different ways. NES is more difficult, and is designed so that in many dungeons you almost need to have certain classes and/or setups. 3D version is easier except for 2 bosses (one in the middle of the game, and one being the last boss), but there are changes to the classes and new equipment that makes every class viable pretty much everywhere.
FF4 is best on PSP for your first playthrough. The 3D remake is good, but extremely brutal. Don't play After Years.
FF5 I'm not 100% sure on because I haven't played the fan translation of the SNES version. What I can say is that of the official releases, GBA is the best no question. The audio will never match up to the original, even with the patch, and the translation is quite a bit fluffed up in comparison to the Japanese text though.
FF6 is best on GBA. The SNES translation is dogshit. Again, even with the patch, the audio isn't going to be as good, but it's either shit audio or shit text.

They're excellent games, although 7th Dragon changes in gameplay significantly between games.
I'd heavily recommend them.
Also since I already said the two, I might as well say for shining force.
Seems entirely medieval fantasy until a group of lizardmen unearth an ancient weapon... which turns out to be a heavy fixed laser cannon. From there it stays pretty fantasy but grows more elements slowly until it is very clear that the "ancients" of legend and the "dark dragon" were an advanced people fighting against a massive sentient sea creature.

Nah, I play plenty of old games and new games. A facelift like the FF PSP releases are always nice, but I've never not liked a game because of its age. Jrpgs especially just have some naturally magical quality that makes them fun and enticing, regardless of age. I think you're just a faggot.

No seriously, it is a good JRPG for the NES. Even has a panic system that your characters can't act when they take too much damage. Also they went above and beyond with the sound chip for the music.

You can play FFT: War of the Lions without worrying about that. I've played through the Japanese version of FFT while comparing to the two translated scripts, WotL's is near perfect, and written well to boot. FF6 GBA and FF10's translations are both pretty good on accuracy as well. FF5 GBA is accurate, but the dialogue is fluffed up to sound more goofy than it actually was. I don't think it's a big deal.

not bad, it's pretty much handheld-tier, although I'm partial to handhelds too. i'd recommend one of the SMT games on the system but i've tried 3 of them released on the system and none of them have seemed *really* solid, not bad but not quite just right either. hoping SJR will fix that and hit the "just right" with its magic maps.

on that system I really like Legend of Legacy; it's another flawed title but it's very minimalist. Playing it will reveal how casual you really are.

I will give you a drunk man's rundown.

I have an interesting relationship with the Ar tonelico games. I loved all of them, but I'm also embarrassed by the fact that I liked them, haha, so I don't usually tell people that I liked them. I'm too drunk for an actual written up summary so I will give you pros/cons. Let me know if you have more specific questions and I will be happy to answer them.

Pros:
- Awesome, awesome world/premise, probably one of the most interesting I've seen in jrpgs.
- interesting plot
- great music.
- the first and second game have a pretty standard turn-based system, but the third game adopted a 3d action system a la star ocean or tales series.
- if you're into linguistics (I was a linguistics major), this game has a detailed made up language with several dialects, and most of the game's music is in this language. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1GtMiKXE_E

Cons:
- waifushit, you will probably feel embarrassed at least one time playing these games unless you have no humanity.
- the gameplay can get a bit tedious at times, especially in the first game.

>>380572112
A lot of people never figure out how to git gud and give up on it. The game doesn't really give you a lot of instructions on how things work so people just assume everything is random or just grindy. Although stat gains / skills do happen randomly, you can actually somewhat easily increase the odds of getting them by facing stronger opponents. But then you also have to not die. So a lot of encounters can become difficult and rely heavily on the strategies / skills employed. Although there are some more powerful / meme strategies (ie. air contract spam) you never really reach the point of being able to just overpower strong enemies like in a lot of jrpgs.

>Someone tell me how Trails in the Sky is.

If you ignore Coco, you have to get the shadow stone from a surprise triple shadow giant battle in the lair of shadows, right in the middle of the broken shrine. Usually it will have at least one or two Hex of the Shadows. He does indeed come back on NG+ though.
Also one huge tip if you haven't crushed Cherubim yet. Save scum for his sword, it's not an immensely rare drop and it's the most powerful weapon in the whole game, plus it has fire attribute and makes you pretty much immune to anything ice or water related. It's also one of the very few items that carries to NG+, since NG+ resets your inventory. I strongly recommend it, as Bianca uses it extremely well.

FE5 is actually really easy. The enemies are really weak, the game gives you a ton of overpowered weapons from the start, there are lots of tools available to trivialize any challenge the game presents, your characters will become nearly invincible simply by levelling up, etc. While the game does have some surprises, there's nothing that you can't overcome on a blind playthrough; you always have more than enough time and tools to respond appropriately.

There is one thing in FE5 that could potentially fuck you over but that's only if you somehow manage to get to the final stage with no Door Keys and all of your thieves are dead.

Question of the day: Why are so many JRPG devs committed to self-sabotage and fan alienation? Picture very related as the first two Xenoblade games had a great visual style but looking at this just screams "Straight to DVD sequel" in a way no one wanted. I can already feel the cringe from miles away.

JRPG devs are committed to self-sabotage and it's so weird. Even if the game is great they'll find a way to make it embarrassing to play in your living room. Nier is the only game I can think of in the past couple years that escaped this, Persona 5 was a huge offender for me. Thank god P5 had dual audio or I wouldn't have finished it.

Why does Monolith Soft want to shoot themselves in the foot like this? What is it about the Japanese that makes them want to alienate their fans this way? First two games were great, visually tasteful; this is total nonsense though.

both Xenoblade and Xenoblade X have carried underlying themes of setting out to seek bloodthirsty vengence (if anything all our games so far have this),

I don't understand how people can shit on Rex's default armor design while completely ignoring how ugly Shulk's default armor design is.

I feel like its going to be another FFT vs FFTA situation where the second game wasn't bad but a lot of people just couldn't get into the cutesy artstyle.

A shame too because TA's story was a lot more of its own thing compared to FFT which was LUCT all over again
>>
>>380586893

I think it's rather easy because even if you don't like Shulk's default armor, Rex's default looks like the obligatory ugly armor every character gets. Shulk has weird pants, weird shoes, a shirt and a weird vest while Rex looks like a Megaman Aquaman reject.

I don't think either of you realize that you'll probably be changing his armor within the first 10 minutes just like in any other Xeno game.
>>
>>380587264
Don't forget that you can change your blade too so people who don't like Pyra/Homura don't have to see her 24/7.
>>
>>380585468
Technically yes but cyas and sety both join with door keys and some enemies in chapter 24 have them. And as long as you have at least one you can gather more from the lopt mages. And maybe the lopt mages will unlock the doors once they run out of tomes, FE5 has special AI stuff sometimes.
>>
>>380588295
You'll have to capture all of the lopt mages to get their door keys because FE5 is like the only game in the series besides 6 where enemies don't drop items.

>fast forward button

That wasn't part of the original game but an addition to the next version.

>Forgetting to balance the specials around it

Top kek devs you could juice the buffs to the limit. I'm not touching the fast forward button, and you can play the "muh vidya respects muh time" card as much as you like while you contradict yourself by wasting your time 90% of the day.

Better decently-written filler than CS2's cavalcade of stupid bullshit. There may not actually be much happening in FC but at least there isn't anything as poorly done as EVERYTHING in the Infernal Castle or the Thors bit. Or the final dungeon which actually blatantly tells you there is no point to it.
>>

>My main gripe with BD was that I figured out much of the main plot after the first crystal

That's not the story's fault but yours for playing a hundred games per month to the point of redundancy.

The Ruan chapter is practically the same shit that people decry CS for. Not that CS2 was particularly good or anything especially considering that its one game split up into two games.

thats my stuff bro that was the last tales game i realy fell in love with id love to see them make a new one thats more on the 2D side like but make it real crisp and clear with good eye stuning art and nice backdrops

>its one game split up into two games.
Still doesn't excuse both games from being shit.
Ruan is also a single chapter instead of a whole game.

>>
>>380589357
One game split up into two games means that they had to butcher it to pad it out to fill two games worth of game time. Not to mention that CS was also constrained by the timeline since it basically couldn't progress the plot without stepping over Zero/Ao's toes.

Also while Ruan might be just one chapter it was a very weak chapter that killed what little momentum there was right in the middle of the game. Going straight from my dad wasn't actually on the missing ship to lets have a fucking school play was pretty jarring. Even when CS did its school festival thing it was after they had presumably defeated the main villains so there weren't that many overhanging threads to presumably get in the way.
>>
>>380588391
Or steal, or use the thief staff.
There's no need for enemies to drop items in FE5 because the capturing system lets you take nearly everything. It would just be confusing.

So they have another IP that people want but they won't do anything with it. Never change, Sega.
>>
>>380590106
Fine, then just use Tina.

Also you forgot to mention the most obvious solution: skip the door keys, just warp / rewarp all over the place. And then you can capture the lopt mages and warp/rewarp/rescue your way out if you choose.

Now, if you threw away all your door keys, thief staff, lockpicks, warp staves, and rewarp staves you would probably be screwed (unless the AI is merciful).
>>
>>380590948
Now that's a possible solution although you have no control over your deployment slots which will drag things out massively especially when dealing with Elf.
