I would say Tekken has a very different skill curve than most games.
The initial learning and getting the hang of a character is fairly easy outside ofthe few characters with actual execution shit like iWS loops, ewgf, acid rain -- and learning movements like wavedashing/kbd, etc.
It doesn't take long to get to a serviceable local level actually and start doing work on people.
However if you actually want to get above rank Fighter or some shit or win a local major, running your basic offense and just blocking is no longer enough; you need to know frame data and optimal punishes on risky pokes. That's where the game polevaults in terms of difficulty because the knowledge required to do this is massive.

I'm new to tekken and I've been playing Eliza this entire time because I want to look at her tits and thighs.
But I don't think it's working out. She's really slow and stubby, and everything is crazy risky. I feel like the only things she really excels at are closing distance (in a game where everybody defaults to being in their face anyway), WS1 xx dp1 > the rest being an exceptionally high damage i14 ws launch punish, having a divekick, and getting good damage off of lows but her lows are all kinda shit outside of that. I don't have a problem with her combos but pressing her buttons just feels bad. That's not really why I want to drop her though, I just don't really mesh well with whatever it is that she's good at and wants to do.
The whole game just kinda makes me wanna go back to Soul Calibur. Is there a character that has any core gameplay facets in common with Nightmare or Raphael? Currently I'm looking at Dragunov and Miguel, maybe Feng. I thought I'd play Bryan but he doesn't have cool animations besides his throws and win/intros, and that's requisite to me enjoying a character.
I've played around with Dragunov a bit and he seems more my speed but I don't know if it's just because he's top tier or what. I like having big buttons and going at them.

Sell me on Miguel's savage stance.

Way I see it is that it's for the most part a tacked on waste of time. Sure it has a couple of immediately noticeable good moves but aside from that it looks to me like it adds a bunch of extra execution with effort disproportionate to reward. The best aspects of it that I can see is that it tends to give you slightly better mixup options with a few frames shaved off the recovery of them and maybe more juggle opportunities on counterhit. It feels to me like that's not really worth the hassle of having to set up the transition into it and then keeping it looped for pressure while still keeping your mixup option in it in mind. I'm sure it makes all the difference at like EVO-tier skill level but is worth it on an intermediate level at all? Feels like Miguel is already sorta well rounded enough to where he can accomplish a lot without also having to account for immobilizing yourself for being able to do the same stuff just slightly more optimally. I don't see the part where it clicks for me, where I can say, oh, it's all worth it for this.

It depends on how negative the opponent is; 1,2 and b2,1 aren't the same type of punishment, I'm guessing you "standing 2, 1".
Both of those are 10f punishments, King does have stronger ones, but not against -10 moves, since those are his 10f punishments.
His next standing punishment would be at 12f -b+1, 2-, then 13f -standing 4 or d/f+2,but I believe the previous one does more damage-, 14f seems to be b+2 -though I believe it's still better to do b+1,2- and for 15f is the hopkick.
While rising would be: 10f cr.1, 2, 11f is the universal WS+4, he doesn't have one for WS 12f or13f, and for 14 is WS+2, 15f or more is full crouch d/f+2 or just a hopkick.

I've played a friend's copy when he came for E3 and started learning King's moves when he was sleeping, Managed to get the first 117 before my thumb started to hurt and I had to stop.
First time I actually want to learn a character in years, never been much into fighters and usually when I do I just like to see story and special moves before I quit it.
This game is actually making me want to GIT GUD.

Just finished Story Mode yesterday. The Mishima story was fine but the character stories was so dumb and shows that the team just rushed most of them.
I miss Tekken 5 and 4's "story"/arcade modes with actual endings and more fights. There was nothing more fun than being a shitter and beating 10 assholes with your friends in order to get a 2 minute cutscene.
