Western UIs are always fucking garbage because they use the ugliest, most garish fonts, horrible color balance, disgusting menus and text boxes, just all around complete disasters. The Japanese at least have an ounce of aesthetic sense, so there's your answer.

I can actually understand this. I personally like it because of its animations. But to others it could look like an over designed mess. Games that do it bad are Life's Strange, where everything is an unappealing doodle and backgrounds are on crumpled up pieces of paper. It's just messy and hideous to me, but P5 makes it work because of its geometric shapes and 2 toned colors.

P5 has a decent UI, but to say it's over designed is an understatement. And the UI doesn't save the other aspects of the game from being terrible.
