HAL has descirbed it in a miiverse post as an "action fighting game", and it was said in the april direct to have a focus on multiplayer.

It definitely will be a fighter, but nobody knows if the gameplay is either identical to Kirby Fighters (Deluxe) or something different.

While hype I was really surprised to see them do another platformer yet again, I was sure HAL would want to do something else by now, or at least not announce it only a year after robobot, but I think Nintendo made them do it (or I could just be deflecting blame and HAL have simply become conformist hacks)

Nintendo needs games on the switch, the sooner the better, it needs guaranteed sellers and to tick off all the IP boxes. While HAL might've pushed for riskier projects Nintendo would rather take the lowest risk option, HAL can probably make these in their sleep by now, the development schedule is well known and relatively short, the budget isn't crazy, and its guaranteed to sell while giving the switch its Kirby platformer. Its quite likely they even see part of the Wii U's failings as not having enough of these time tested experiences on them. They don't want to leave the Switch without a Kirby platformer, so they made sure it was the first thing HAL did on Switch.

The positive I can see in this is that HAL will probably give it their all, using it as a last chance to try all the crazy shit they may still want to do before they retire the formulae and move to something more innovative. With any luck this will be the definite and best of the recent games, we already saw them bringing back two fan favorite mechanics at once, and so far seems devoid of any of the usual gimmicks.
Considering Nintendo staff were the ones who pushed for Super Abilities back in RtDL (despite not being in Kumazaki's original draft), I'd love it if it went down like

Its not a smahs clone, or we don't know
We just know its a fighter, and usually those have diverse rosters, and its the anniversary year (which they keep doing a song and dance about).
So its easy to assume it'll be some kind of competitive game featuring characters from across the series history, but past that we don't relaly know, we don't know how it might even play.
So its Kirby Smash in the "crossover fighter" sense, but not "literally a smash clone" sense

Well this is a first for a Kirby game to come out so early in a console's life. Maybe it also have to do with the fact that HAL also helped with the development of the Switch. But I really do hope that releasing a 2D Kirby this early means that they're planning another major Kirby game on the Switch that's moving the series in a new direction in it's later life span, maybe around 5-6 years in.

I wish it was as robust as 64, but i can work with this, provided it is this expansive. (all of them are already in the dream engine, so they should be)
It will definitely be better than squeak squad if we have that many elements.

>Water= pushing effects/extended range
>Ice= freezing
>Wind= pushing and projectiles, maybe floating ability
>electricity= stun and slow
>Poison= Damage over time. Maybe extended time compared to fire.

>ESP= projectiles, homing attacks
>Stone= Extra damage and blocking

Some of them overlap a bit. Maybe elemental counters will play a role. Like Fire weapons cant hurt a water enemy, making the DoT worthless, whereas poison's DoT would still work.

In modern games contact damage will never drop your star but any attacks are guaranteed to do it.
They're not less aggressive, just the modern games have less running into shit and running into shit not being as punishing, but they also have all kinds of stage hazards as bigger threats that will always take away abilities, sometimes even destroy them.
I'm sure more than half the time anyone gets hit in Adventure its from running into an enemy rather than it actually doing a good job at landing an attack, or it being aggressive with its attacks

Call it casualized or whatever, but it seems fairer to me in the sense that it doesn't punish you for simply running into things, so a static waddle dee won't suddenly take a sixth of your health. The thing the modern games can actually do is have a variety of ways of doing damage, from how it affects your ability to how much health it takes. And it should go without saying things are balanced out one way or another, less non-attacker enemies and more stage hazards. Something like Adventure really only had enemies and pits at its disposal, so it made use of them more often. A horde of waddle dees could be used as a thread, but that's just be something to plow through in the current games, but you have to tread carefully when the background is out to crush you.
It is kind of silly that touching a waddle dee has the same effect as getting shot by a cannon or slashed by a sword or hit by a super powerful boss, but its fine in the context of adventure's design, just as the modern games have their own balance around these things
