Honestly I never played any of the xenoblade games. what makes them good?

Xenoblade is a sum of a lot of great parts. The story is quite good, the music is excellent, the combat is solid, the characters are likable, the setting is imaginative, it's a long lasting game, and all together it just makes for a great experience.

I'm not sure what's worse, how bad I know it's going to be or the fact that I'm buying it anyway.
The first one was everything a jrpg can get wrong and then some. Generic and flat characters, tosses the entire emotional premise of "rah rah, humanity" out the window half-way through the game, utterly uninspired side content. The combat's alright, but the level design is utter ass, no real reason to explore.

Oh yeah, and if it weren't generic enough, Jesus is the final boss. Brilliant!

It's overwhelmingly absent in the later half of the game. The great fucking monster that's trying to destroy them, the war that so many gave their lives to, is cheapened and made trivial by an ass-pull, divine villain. It's just fucking awful.
I quit at the boss fight with that traitor Entia lady inside the Bionis, so I admittedly don't know how the final fight with Dickson turns out. I was so fucking over the game at that point.
