Not a good sign.
>>

They can make the rulers as tough as they want to, just don't give them a turn after every single unit's action. It doesn't even make thematic sense -- what, they all move 6x faster than every other human/alien?
>>
I really, really, really want to be excited for this expansion. Then I remember how XCOM 2's core is designed around timed missions, something unfixable even with all the mods that are out there right now.

>They’ll pipe up on the strategy layer or in combat to talk about things that happened on the last mission, such as gloating about capturing a soldier or stating they won’t be as easy to defeat as their sibling

This sounds annoying as fuck. It's already bad enough when the Elders nag you on the final mission and you have to spend several seconds waiting for them to shut the fuck up.
>>
>shitters STILL whining over timers.
>>
>>380483024
It's not that big of a nerf though. They're just letting you activate each ruler one by one and they no longer get a free reaction when you reload your gun or use a buffing ability like Run and Gun.
>>
>>380484032

Being able to kill rulers/Avatars with repeaters is near-cheating and I hope they'll patch it out with the expansion.

How do I even play XCOM on difficulty normal and higher. That game is so fucking hard and full of LOL RANDUMB moments it makes me mad when you lose all progres..
>>
>>380485030
Xcom 2 has a lot of shit that just shatters the balance.

Vanilla Grenadiers and repeaters. Meme beacons at one time. Also Psonics.

Its definitely worse balance than 1 even though I love both about equally.

>LOST to stop grenade spam cheese
>Missions where LOST are purged by advent purifiers like its a fucking space hulk game.

Thats still pretty noticeable, at least 4 extra actions lost. Plus the bigger thing is you have to raid the facility they individually guard before they spook you on missions, meaning you have even more time to prepare.
>>380485076
THIS.
>>380484032
Repeater is probably the dirtiest cheese I've seen.

All we need are SHIVS back and maybe a special mission with EXALT surviviors still around (even though it was confirmed that some of your recruits in xcom2 were originally exalt hence the bandannas) and its golden.
>>

I mean on Iron Man, I finished both games (well technically I didn't finish first nu-XCOM so I could play forever) but it just gets so unfair and hard later in the game that I can't imagine beating it on Iron Man Commander. Just... HOW?
>>
>>380485879
You need to think dirty and plan ahead, simply running and gunning wont save you. You need to make sure the aliens dont get a fair fight.
>>
>>380485879
You get screwed over by the randomness because you made bad decisions. It's all about learning how to make safe strategies that don't cause deaths just because you missed some shots.

>>
So this game is finally worth buying? thank god.
>>
>>380485879
Redundancy.

Is your whole plan relying on one 80% shot? It's a shit plan. Have two 80% shots you can spare

Always blue move. Only yellow when you're absolutely sure there are no aliens.

Pull only one pod at a time and always plan to OTK everything. A good xcom player never gives the enemy a chance to shoot. This isnt og com, you dont have expendable rookies nor fuck-everything levels of rockets.

Always invest in damage weapons first and items second. Armor is important, but equipment can fill squad weaknesses.

Always prep your squad to have an answer for cover hugging aliens, melee mobs, and elite aliens.

Dont be afraid to lose anyone.

After this, you've mastered this you shouldn't feel the need to ever save-scum.
>>
>>380486991
It was worth buying even on release.
>>
>>380484032

>>
>>380485879
The game gives you a metric shitton of guaranteed damage attacks, from grenades to flaking shotgun attacks, to drones, etc. Use them. Obliterate pods on the turn you activate them.
>>
The perfect solution to timers is the mod that makes them only start ticking down when you go out of concealment.
>>
>>380486615
>Lancers

Flashbangs. Use and abuse flashbangs.
>>
>>380486294
I beat it on ironman commander and am working on legendary. You just need to understand the mechanics and abuse them.
Don't uncover new LoS unless you want to trigger another pod of enemies. ALWAYS use full cover. If you have no choice but to put a guy in half cover, hunker him down. The best way to play is to kill a pod of enemies before they even get to attack you

>>
>>380487598
Fun fact, that was the original plan, but playtesters would be incredibly hesitant to start the engagement as new players and found it unfun.
>>
Can we talk about how fucking boring ADVENT is to fight?
A good 80% of the enemies you fight against are ADVENT soldiers that hardly feel alien. Compare this to XCOM EU where you start fighting sectoids and thin men right off the bat, they're both far more interesting design wise and gameplay wise. Aliens were reduced to 'tough' enemies instead of being the focus.

This was the biggest thing that just left a stale taste in my mouth after playing through it. I wasn't excited to play missions by the end of the campaign because I knew there would still be boring ADVENT everywhere.
Also, the soundtrack was garbage and the game boiled down to "kill the pod on the turn you reveal it" even more so than XCOM EU.
>>
>>380483535
>they all move 6x faster than every other human/alien
Even that doesn't make sense if you try to apply logic to it. Your soldier doesn't just move individually while the rest of the squad waits.

It's just a shit mechanic and let's leave it at that.
>>
>>380488447

Thats because kill the pod will always be the most objective answer to any tbs game. Why ever risk them retaliating?
I agree though i felt aliens being the actual threats felt better. Sectoids just were rediculously goofy after the first few missions in EU.
>>
>>380488447
I completely agree, only good enemies were andromedon and gatekeeper.

one-turn-killing all enemies isn't even a fun way to play the game

I thought the soundtrack was ok thought, that mission successful-tune is nice to hear
>>
>>380488447
Sectoids and Thin Men just used their turn to shoot at you like regular soldiers 90% of the time. Now sectoids and sneks use their actual alien abilities on their turns 90% of the time, BECAUSE the "shoot at your dudes" enemy is its own archetype. I found XCOM 2 made the aliens feel more alien because they COULD add the soldiers

I did miss the Deus-Esque (heh) soundtrack from EU though

Funny thing for me is I am a pleb and like my spess mehreen baldman alien foes. I love fighting mutons, advent just doesn't have the same impact. I don't need super eldritch aliens just gimme Mechtoids and mutons and I am happy.
>>
>>380489295
Everyone misses that soundtrack.

But I agree. Sectoids in EU are even more inefficient than 2's sectoids because of their stupid two for one mind meld that they screw themselves with.

No enemy in 2 will match the absolute cockheadness of the thin man. You either have him snipe you out of full cover (which happens way too much) or he'll be a bitch and poison you.

One turn killing has always been the optimal strat though. I dont know why I see some people saying Xcom 1 was balanced around you killing 2 aliens a turn. If you weren't a scrub, 9/10 pods you'd OTK. The minority you didnt was because of stupid mistakes.
>>
>>380490772
>Advent unlike Exalt are not human
They are though. They are literally humans infused with alien DNA.

But hey you would have to play the game to find that out and this is /v/.
>>
>>380491142
It's because people play on normal where they don't actually have to strategize, they can just take random shots and eventually win. So they don't realize that EU is just as reliant on OTK as 2 is
>>
>>380491002
I like it. Killing alien sympathizers was new and I liked it.

If they just made EU again, I think it'd probably end up feeling like playing TFD again.
>>
>>380491006
Exactly. Mutons are fine, Advent is just a generic cyberpunk human soldier by another name. Exalt wasn't exactly thrilling but it was also better than Advent.

While advent were orginally humans, the pricess in order to make them makes Advent much closer to sectoids then humans. Its just the armour.
They are manufactured and brainwashed ground up in factories. You take one look at thier face underneath the armour and its easy to see they are more alien than human.

In EU the elders explain every race each enemy used to be and how they radically altered them to suit thier needs. ADVENT is just what they planned for us.

The chosen are specifically tasked with recapturing the commander like some ayy 007.
Plus the chosen are so hated by local resistance that each of the three has thier own cult of humans dedicated to taking that specific chosen member out.
All the LOST souls who got consumed by the abduction pods in eu are coming back as a zombie horde plaguing advent and xcom alike.

I love the game mechanically and all the things theyve added. But I hate the core concept. The whole resistence angle is super boring and contrived to me. I loved the secret government funded multinational unilateral stormtroopers of XCOM. The rag tag rebel shit bores me to tears.

Still love XCOM2. Just hate they went down that path. Because you can never come back from that without a reboot.

That's pretty cool. I take it the resistant groups fucked with the processing plants for the corpses and now it's a giant headache everyone has to deal with? Does that mean they'll be aggressive to both sides mid-battle?

To expand on this post. This is why I have to use mods that add more traditional armor. I also HEAVILY regret my season pass because if I could choose to not download Anarchy's children I would do it immediately. >>
>>380496128
The issue with LW2 is it was balanced around a set of autismos who specifically looked for means to cheese the game; so you get this super unfun mess that discourages combat with the best way to do every mission by never actually engaging in combat.
Unless it's changed drastically since release it's just unfun, even beagle the man who loved LW1 thinks LW2 is way too overtuned with their retarded "even if you play perfectly only 50% of games should be won" balancing.

I'm not sure if I'd rather see a TFTD for Xcom3 or Space in Xcom3 - think less high faluting star wars space and more Aliens/Xenomorph kinda space - humanity starts to expand not with T3 hijacked alien tech but with stuff we've cobbled together. That way you can have space walks with the 3d element of no gravity but also standard fighting.

On the one hand TFTD has a lot but on the other limiting to just underwater (or stuff outside of it but which you fight largely the same enemies largely the same way) is very niche. And Phoenix is already doing the body horror flesh-shapers angle (and could end up doing underwater as DLC).

>>380495412

I can respect the attempt at something new given the alternative is just repeating Xcom 94/2012 over and over. I'm not sure if I like the cyberpunk resistance approach compared to if we had gotten cyberpunk corporation approach of Apocalypse. But maybe I would have been butthurt about that instead.

>>380496672

I haven't done LW2 but I feel like all I want is the infiltration mechanic, otherwise the rest can bugger off.

No actually the ayys planned the lost all along, but it clearly got out of hand due to underestimating just how dense human population is.
The Ghiest resistance team are used to fighting in the abandoned cities where the majority of the lost are, its the reason they are all clad in stalker-esque gas masks.
While youre playing rambo and guerrilla freedom fighter, ghiest were left 4 dead

The Konstantine Templars on the other hand are so used to having to deal with the warlock chosen and advent priests that they believe the need to not only purge the xenos physically but psionically. They are basically xcoms equivalent to 40ks black templars.

I would have much prefered Apocalypse style. corrupt Mega Corps, cyberpunk enhancements, crazier and crazier Ayyy tech.

Xcom facing a battle against Ayys but also the machinations of the mega corporations, pro alien cultist, Xcom stretched to the limit having to do everything it can to fight off the cults, the ayys, mega corp black op units trying to steal tech for themselves, politiking between the government, corps, religious organizations.

God it would have been glorious. Guess it could sort of kind of still happen if Xcom3 was set like 100 years later.

Doesn't Apocalypse also give you the option to basically become a rogue organization and operate way beyond your supposed mandate if you just keep raidaing corporate facilities for the resources you need to continue operating? It would be an interesting direction for the new games to go to, the whole organization becoming an army of knight templars who don't care about the Council's pennycounting and just straight up goes off the grid and starts fighting both the ayyliums and Earth's governments.

It wouldn't work for the current game, but I would like something like that implemented into the next one.

Rulers were a shit way to up difficulty. The fact that they appear in random missions and have a ton of HP shoulda been enough to serve their purpose of throwing a wrench in your plans, instead they gave them that turn after all your individual actions.

You know what the worst part of that DLC is? They WEREN'T hard. You know why? The problem with that Mr. dna major is that they don't resemble frogs, or deer, or any other animal, they resemble humans since they had human dna spliced into them.

In terms of showing up on missions and needing to be chased off? Sure. But they do things outside of missions and basically feel more like Exalt in that they can sabotage regions so you get less supplies, capture soldiers off the field and can attack the Avenger directly and spawn a different base defense.

Rulers acted like Super enemies, same AI, just with stronger moves. Chosen act as Rivals, they have equal to player abilities and rush to fight you if they spawn on a mission instead of you needing to run into them. This means that they could mess up your engagement like nothing else even if you don't move an inch.

If anything, they are what Rulers should have been.

Instead of giving them anime hair and Tali's visor from Mass Effect they should have made Avatars look sort of like pic related. A completely featureless, perfectly sculpted human form made of smooth white material. Don't even give them guns, just make them fire energy blasts from their hands and only make slow, deliberate movements. That would certainly make them unique and make sense thematically with the whole "appropriation of the human form" thing the Ethereals have going on.
>>
>>380511329
Rulers didn't hunt you down, you just happen to run into them. Most of the time you could get them to spawn in a none roaming pod and completely bypass them. Chosen actually hunt you and do more outside of the Tactical layer.

There are different tiers of armor. Whats stopping you from starting with Titanfall gear, then going Section 9, then finally Halo?

I dont fucking care, did they fix the horrible performance issues and the retarded crashes?

Fuck these niggers for never patching it.

Supposedly, the update with the expansion will fix shit.

I am never buying the alien rulers DLC

Don't fucking remind me, a fucking space flintlock and some dual axes.

When did you stop playing? They made many patches for performance updates and they will be making another for the expansion. Obviously you won't have to own the expansion for the performance patch.

>pod
the post system is utter garbage and I pray to the ayylmao gods that phoenix point (the x-com clone by the creator of the original x-com) doesn't use it.

the vast majority of complainst and problems in the nu-xcom games originates from the pod system.
>timer
because due to how pods work, the optimal strategy in xcom1 was to make them activate on their turn, and run into your overwatch, since they can't attack if they activate on their turn.
Thus, overwatch crawl was countered by strict timers.

Without timers, any mission is a cakewalk
>>
>>380521267
Rulers are getting changed. Only Movement and Attacking actions will have Ruler reactions attached to them now. So you can do things like Run and Gun, reload, conceal and a bunch of other things and the Ruler won't do shit. Also if your guys do a movement or attacking action out of the Rulers LoS they can't react to it either. So you can still fight some other Aliens if he can't see you.
>>
Are psionic units worth the amount of time you need to put into making them?
>>
>>380522375
>the post system is utter garbage and I pray to the ayylmao gods that phoenix point doesn't use it.

From the gameplays it seems like the enemies roam freely around the map.
>>
>>380522543

This doesn't matter if they don't rebalance the weapons/armor. Actually it might make things worse, since these new guys ALSO have OP shit you can get.
>>
>>380522683

Yes, though less so on Legend. 2+ psi soldiers is OP.
>>
>>380522773
thank fuck
got a link to gameplays, the official site is utter garbage
>>
>>380522683
Yes, they're pretty strong. And they'll be essential in the expansion, since using explosives will attract the Lost, so you'll have to rely on Psi powers if you want guaranteed damage.
>>
>>380522683
YES! I can't stress that enough. They are far too good for what they cost. They level up just by putting them in the tube and most Psi stuff being targeted will not miss. Soulfire can heal you after getting the add on for it. Null Lance is one of the highest damage you can do in the game outside of crits. Dominate is a permanent mind control against any target as long as you make the hit. Insanity can give you control of a unit as well and Void Rift damages and causes things to be effected by Insanity.

Almost everything the Psi Ops can do is worth getting and way too powerful. If anything Psi needs a nerf so the other soldiers don't get over shadowed in the late game.
>>
>>380523325
>If anything Psi needs a nerf so the other soldiers don't get over shadowed in the late game.

The problem with making psi ops less powerful is you still need to justify all the resources you put into them. If it gets to the point where they're only as good as a regular class, you'll never use them.

Not much so far, you can find a video or two more. It's basically a preset fight on a tiny map, but lobster mutants will go towards you from the other end of the map.

Really? Might convert from Halo then
TBS GiTS would be great or a Rainbow Six clone
>>
>>380522781
They would be fools not to.

>Chosen weapons

It will probably take till late game to even get to the point you can kill them anyway. If anything, since it's an achievement to kill them all in their bases, Jake doesn't seem to think that you will kill them all in normal gameplay. Though it's confirmed any you don't kill will show up in the final mission.

>>380523605
I think all they need to do is make it so you can't train them up to the next level unless they get mission experience and that will slow down their growth and make them feel less like late game nukes you don't have to do anything with until the last few missions where your rookie comes out the tube a literal god.

With this Inspiration speeding up research, I see a bunch of early game psi coming into play.

>and completely break that aesthetic of the game
The aesthetic is garbage to begin with, it's the worst aspects of generic modern scifi with the remnants of the toy-like proportions of enemy unknown.
>>
Why in the fuck is there not a good XCOM clone but with a fantasy setting? Mordheim sucks ass, don't know how they managed to make it so boring. Even a total conversion of XCOM2 would be fine.
>>
>>380525416
I hope so. Mechanically it seems interesting, with the return fire and targetting, but they've got a long way to go to take away the nuxcom audience
>>
>>380525484

I like the scrappy look of the Kevlar armor and the shininess of the Warden armor. Predator is garbage.

I have seen a guy, who knows what he was doing in X-Com 2 still get his shit pushed in by the 3rd Alien Ruler.

He only won because repeater took it out before it could seriously fuck up a person with the slam
>>

>>380526583
There's so many IPs that could pull this off, just copy the existing games and sell loadsa games.
>>

>repeater
Fucking why, the whole upgrade system was pretty bad but repeaters don't make any sense.
>>
>Your XCOM squad will never take turns raping a Viper as she cries for help.
>>
>>380526448
They were shady as fuck, but they were a real player competing with both Xcom and the Aliens, which was so cool
>>
>>380526829

Repeaters are hilarious though. It's always fun to be thinking seriously about your moves only to one-shot a guy. I just use a mod to make Avatars and Rulers immune to it.
>>
>>380526893
On paper, we never saw them fighting the aliens and the original system couldn't even make them fight the aliens so LW had to retcon their origins to justify being placed on the same side as the Aliens
>>
>>380529250
But they also never faught along side aliens. Even in the story though, they had a convoy carrying that mutant, sonya or whatever, and they were intercepted BY the aliens
>>
I own the DLCs, but haven't played them yet.

Should I wait for the expansion or do a campaign with DLCs before it comes out?
>>
>>380530470
DLCs add nothing, wait for the expansion.
>>
>>380530470
Well, part of the appeal of Xcom games are playing them multiple times, so you might want to play once now and then compare it to the expansion later. I know that's what I'm doing.
>>
>expansion coming out in a few months
>still no nude snek mod

What the fuck, that should've been a day1 mod
>>
>>380531823
There's a nude snek for SFM.
>>
>>380530470

You should do a campaign to familiarize yourself with the game. The DLCs aren't worth it, but the Lost Towers mission is pretty fun.

It's not exactly XCOM but it's a traditional fantasy setting and turn-based.
>>
>>380532875
Mario x Rabbids looks better than it has a right to be
It's strange they're using guns and not like fire flowers, shells, bullet bills, etc
>>
I just want a mod that's more akin to the original xcom but on an even grander scale. I'm talking about a full on battlefield with you controlling 20+ soldiers all at once. Soldiers dying left and right but that doesn't matter you've got millions more to fill their spots. I don't care if one mission takes over an hour to beat just because of how many units you move. Add stuff like tanks on both sides into the mix as well.

Maybe I'm just wanting something that's XCOM crossed with EDF.
