Was Fire Emblem seriously flopping and dying before Awakening came out? After enjoying Awakening, I decided to play the 6th gen FE games and I have to say they're wonderful, they feel much more balanced and despite the generic plots, the characters, dialogue and little worldbuilding details really bring them to life. It's sad that the series had to pretty much reinvent itself to survive when it was already this great.
It's because the difficulty and more complex systems and maps made it a harder barrier of entry for mainstream market.
Pairing up, romance supports, having children, removing weapon durability, adding a "no perma-death mode", adding an easy mode, etc. streamlined the series so that anybody could get into it.

It was because sales were bad for several games in a row, starting with Path of Radiance actually.

Which is funny because it was the best game in the series. In fact the gamecube not being a success as a whole is weird, all of the best 3d Nintendo games are on there

It really wasn't.
Why do FE fags delude themselves into thinking the older games were better? There's a reason they sold like shit; they weren't very good.
