From what I've seen, why is this game one of the more hated Final Fantasy games?

Haven't played it yet, but based off of how it looks and how it is probably one of the most unpopular FF's ever, I'm pretty intrigued by it.

The Gambit system looks complex and interesting, the world and its levels seem huge and fairly detailed, and the characters don't look like someone like Nomura threw up on them and used the bile to spike up their hair and dye it with neon hair color(except for maybe Vaan, but from what I learned he wasn't supposed to be in the game anyway.)
