4K isn't entirely a meme. Being able to push higher quality visuals can add to a game and system performance effects the types of games and their complexity that can be developed. The real issue is that platforms live and die by software, which Microsoft has failed to offer it's customers.

When will the "technology doesn't matter" meme end. E3 press conferences talk about 4K because it's easy for normies to process that "shinier graphic = better hardware." Better hardware doesn't just mean a game looks better, dwarf fortress is hard on computers and it literally doesn't have graphics. Better hardware gives you more realistic, immersive worlds that can be loaded with more AI and Physics simulations that can be integrated into the game in meaningful ways.

I like simple fun too, but I also like to see technology progress.

That is entirely the issue. Consoles have gotten powerful enough that no one really cares about specs. We just want games. Nintendo is the only one capable of bringing out unique games that are truly exclusive since they produce both hardware and fun games.

Agreed, 4k is a dumb meme. I got a 4k TV recently and there really is not that much difference. I'd rather have games without annoying frame drops/better lightining/draw distance than more pixels.

Besides, it's really too soon for the home console industry to go for 4k when 4k TVs are still fairly rare and expensive and the computing power to render games at such resolution with satisfying level of visual fidelity isn't quite there yet.

4k is a few years too early to get off the ground. We dont even have 1440p executed properly yet.

I still feels its better having high framerate 1080p in videogames with minimal input lag. We got the technology to have games running at 100s of fps now, and shit like freesync and gsync that cuts down screen tearing.

And Devs, put some fucking color in the games. Make use of that HDR and better contrast ranges modern TVs and monitors have now.

Lets make the act of PLAYING games incredibly enjoyable first rather than the act of just LOOKING at games.

Pushing into 4K isn't so bad in my eyes. I don't have a 4K monitor/TV myself but it's pretty standard procedure to develop and utilize new hardware. We wouldn't get anywhere as a society if we kept thinking "this is good enough".
An example, VR is pretty meh right now, and I have a hard time convincing myself to dabble in it, but I'm super excited that companies are still emphasising it and drawing attention to it. The more popular it becomes the more attention other developers will give to it, and that'll result in VR becoming more refined and polished.

i just picked up a new 1080p 144hz monitor with adaptive sync and anti-motion blur technology because i'd much rather have a solid image running at 100+ fps.

i want 4k eventually after it has matured and at least i'm not forced to be an early adopter playing at shit capped fps.

Nintendo has managed to not make a single game that sells me on one of their systems.

I skipped the Wii U and looks like I will skip the Switch. They make a lot of games that look "nice" but don't get me to want to buy their systems anymore.

How can you say that when Xbox has buzzword, latest forced trend, marketing scheme, and vendor lock-in; you get all this to steer your attention to how good the platform is and not how good the games on the platform are, it's really worth it in my humble opinion and you should think so as well. What's the point of a 4K display when there's barely any content on it, I highly doubt many games will run 4k native on an Xbone, if they do they'll probably look terrible which negates the whole advantage. You either scale a lower res up to 4k or you do native 4k with something that can actually run but looks bad, who wins here?
