One like Captain Trips, where a small percentage is completely immune. Empty cities left mostly intact, working vehicles, etc. your main enemy are humans and their violence.

Small towns and clusters.

Playing a character that could go either way throughout the game based on your decisions.

Maybe even horses and shit, like a post apocalyptic Wild West game but not fallout NV.

If you're interested in "The long game" being the setting of a post apocalypting earth, then you can play the Etrian Odyssey Series.

The first two games make you wait until FAR into the game to even let you know that there were nations before the devolved psuedo-iron age nation you're living in, though 3 and 4 are a bit more hamfisted with it.

Many of the ruins of the old world are varying degrees of beautiful.

Not a game but related: there's an unused music track in simcity 4 that was supposed to play when the player hit the "demolish city" button but Maxis decided against it because it's too dark (it's a creepy, unnerving sounding track compared to the rest of the game's music). The file was still left in the game though, but was made inaccessible ingame.

It's top tier dark comfy if that's what you're into.
