So /v/ I have never played a Zelda game ever.
I'm wondering what you guys would recommend as the most solid entry in the series that would show what it's all about to a new comer.

Ocarina of time, now, just do it quick before anyone tells you otherwise.

skip ocarina of time
There are more polygons in 2B's ass than in Ocarina of Time

Depends on who you are. If you're just a baby or a pleb then you should just start with one of the recent entries. Probably Skyward Sword although I think Twlight Princess is also really accessible.
But if you can stomach old games and stuff that isn't immediately accessible, then you might as well begin with OoT, the classic and most praised entry in the series.

Good starting points are Link to the Past for 2D, Ocarina of Time for 3D.
OP here, just wondering why no one ever brings up Majoras Mask? Since it is often up there when bringing up Nintendo's best games ever. Is it sort of an odd bird of the franchise ?

It's a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time. You wouldn't start there

It's a direct sequel to Ocarina, and pretty different compared to the rest of the games in the series
I think it is the best game in the series, but not the best game to show what the series is about
I'd recommend Link to the Past or Link's Awakening
