The Hat is a manifestation of Man's desire to dominate, a projection of a coping mechanism for insecurity by which man seeks to compensate with possession. It is the control of others, the subconscious need to bend all to one's will and reject the order of a cacophonous world beyond one's reach. It is the instinctual desire of rapine, not mere materialism but borne of Man's covetous nature and insatiability.
