Just like the old marios? Casual garbage

wasn't released in the west until lost levels, arguably doesn't count

If you jumped from heights in Super Mario 64, you'd lose some of your power in your power meter.
>>
>>380363429
Grabbing coins and jumping into water doesn't refill your energy completely anymore though.

source OP?

>>no lives

Good. Lives are an outdated mechanic.

Super Mario Bros. has lives because you restart the level if you die and you restart the whole game if you lose all your lives. But what purpose did lives serve in Super Mario 64? If you die you have to restart the star. If you get a game over you go back to the title screen but you can just load your file and restart the star. Utterly pointless time wasting mechanic.
>>
>>380364917
>he thinks mario 64 is old
>>
>>380363739
I was about to come in and say this.
The game they've shown so far has been more akin to a Wario Land title than a Mario game. You do lose coins when you die, so it's not completely without consequence.
>>

it will be 21 years old on the 23rd

lives are an outdated concept really
As previous anons have said, worked for Wario land games. Why not mario.

a good player never got low enough lives to even warrant getting more. making 1ups pointless.

not to mention every mainline mario game has some kind of 1up exploit anyways. which made them useless.
>>
>>380366225
I totally agree. I'm really pumped for this game and it looks fun as hell but I hated 3D Land and its camera. I really hope they make the camera a little more intimate

I just hope the new one has an extra layer of difficulty.

>>
>>380363779
The original trio were actually pretty challenging.
>>
Odyssey is considered by Nintendo to be a core addition to the series, as opposed to the casual Galaxy games (pic related)
Judging by the later levels of 3D World I expect they will handle difficulty well
>>
>Have 8 health in Mario 64
>Fall damage
>Have 3 health in Mario Odyssey
>No fall damage
I don't see the problem here. Plus Banjo-Tooie had no lives, are you gonna say that game had no challenge too?
>>
>>380363429
Like people have said, Live serve no purpose nowadays.

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is a really challenging game, but you'll have well over 100 lives by the end because the game literally showers you with them.

That doesn't make it any more easier.

This is just laughable. There is no way such a casual, no-death game like Odyssey is even better than 3D World.
>>
>>380363429
fuck off sonygro
>>
>>380368889
Thos games are great. In fact no lives requires you to think more. Lives are useless withput pits too.
>>
>>380370014
The point of that picture is to differentiate between "course clear" (that is literally what it says in Japanese) games and the games where you collect objects to unlock later parts of the game. It says nothing about difficulty.
>>
>>380363429
>no lives
This is fine, lives are retarded

>long falls don't hurt
This is potentially a big mistake. The problem is, in a game like this, half of the platforming challenge is taking place over walkable surfaces, rather than bottomless pits. Long fall damage punishes missed jumps when over walkable surfaces.

The only reason it may work for this game is that it seems like much of the game is structured around abstract platforming challenges that jut out of the hub world like spokes, where you can actually die if you fall. So it may be okay when it comes to the game actually challenging you as a platformer
>>
>>380363429
>no lives

Llives have never been relevant in 3D Mario, they're a pointless collectible. Instead you lose coins, which is a much more direct punishment.

>jumps from hights wont hurt your energy meter

Considering the verticality of the game, that's a good thing.

>no challange at all

It'll probably be like other 3D Marios where the "main story" is relatively easy to complete but there's a lot of semi-challenging optional content (and a few bullshit hard levels).
>>
>>380365464
The release date of Mario 64 is closer to the release date of SMB1 than it is to the present day.
>>
>>380370393
>no-death
No lives != no deaths
>>
>>380365452
This. Lives became pointless in 3D Mario games. Good players would max out the counter in a few hours. Running out was hardly an issue since you'd be dropped right back at start of a level. Most levels didn't even have checkpoints, and those that did only had one. The really bad or scrubby players, like my nephew, would just look up where to grind lives and circumvent it anyway.
>>
Seriously why do lives even exist nowadays?

"Oh no I have to..restart the level? Ok.
>>
>>380370148
Also coins heal you in 64, they don't in Odyssey.
>>
>>380363429
Shovel Knight doesn't have lives and it's one of the hardest platformers in recent memory.
>>
>>380365452
For real, I had like 50 lives in 3D World by the end of World 1.
>>
>>380370569
The punishment of falling is having to go back to the bottom and start the platforming all over again.

Fall damage has never been a big deal in Mario games anyway, because it's so easy to regain life by collecting coins.
>>
play this game OP

you'll realize a Life-system is pointless in a mario game.
>>
>>380370569
>punishment of falling to your death is that you have to do the section all over again
>punishment of falling down to a walkable surface is losing your progress, so you have to do the section all over again

>>380370986
What other punishment would there be for dying?
I don't get what the big deal is. Mario should've gotten rid of lives years ago.

So you get a game over, then what?
>reload last save
>return to title screen
>restart from beginning of level instead of checkpoint

And honestly, ask yourself, when was the last time you got a GAME OVER in a FUCKING MARIO GAME
>>
>>380371062
Try DKC: Tropical Freeze. You will have over a hundred lives by the time you clear a few levels, but it's still balls-to-the-wall difficult.
>>
>>380371189
Fall damage hasn't ever been relevant in any 3D Mario game, since all you have to do is mid-air punch/use Fludd/dive/ground-pound to avoid it.
>>
>>380371321
Never played that game, so I don't know what point you're trying to make.
>>
>>380363429
Its the same as this.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FsbkkOQHj8Y
>>
>>380371313
They are.

Falling in a pit subtracts your coins, and retriggers certain elements of the challenge like respawning enemies.

Having to climb back up again does not.

Plus, the lack of fall damage is what enables skips/exploits like climbing to the highest point in New Donk with EZPZ flip-sticks and then long-jumping 500 yards to an adjacent rooftop to complete a challenge rather than actually figuring out how to climb it.
>>
>>380371801
Falling down, you have to do it all over again.

Also had a city.
>>
>>380363429
>no lives
If anything its more punishing since you lose coins instead, which are a currency as well. Also worth noting that since coins dont heal you in this game, taking damage is more punishing in general.

Also the treehouse presentation was just them running around the hub-worlds rather than the proper levels talking about how pretty they looked.
>>
>>380371274

Fucking this, holy shit.

This one and 3D land pretty much make lives pointless.

>die 3 times
>get a free super leaf that makes you a tanuki god and lets you breeze through the level
>>
>>380372193
>Actually using the pity mechanic which was literally intended for young children

For shame, anon.
>>
>>380371584

I would at least like an optional hard mode, with stronger enemies, stronger bosses, more complex level design, jumps that require critical timing, and limited saves. That means your safety net of saves will eventually run out, meaning that if you want to save after every star, you'll screw yourself in the long run.

I know this would frustrate the filthy normies, which is why I just want it to be optional. I just like things that harken back to the shmup era, where you couldn't save scum through the game.
>>
>>380365452
this, also in all 3d mario games you rack up lives like crazy so they're meaningless anyway
the coin penalty hurts way more
>>
>>380372453

I'll be honest to say I used it a couple times because I kept fucking up those red coins that require you to move quick or you risk missing the platform you're riding on and you have no choice but to die.

The last time I played a handheld Mario game was 6 Golden Coins. I had no idea how bad the state of gaming has gone when it comes to handholding, but this is what is required in order to be more "inclusive to audiences of all skill levels".
>>
>>380372497
You don't even need that, just have an extra dozen hard levels that requires you to make full use of your character's mechanics.
Mario 64 and Sunshine were absolutely god-like with their controls and character actions, but they didn't give you enough levels to fully put them to use.
>>
Lives don't have anything to do with the difficulty. Anyway, I can tell you how the difficulty in this game will work, because it's the same in every 3D Mario game. Half the game is baby level extremely easy. By completing this half of the levels you can fight the final boss and finish the game. The other half will be balls to the wall hard. They do this so bad players can still have a good experience but good players can get a real challenge.
>>
>>380364917
>be falling in super mario 64
>press z before landing
woooooow
>>
>>380372497
Limited saves in a fucking platformer sounds awful.
>>
FALL DAMAGE

IN A PLATFORMER

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU THINKING OP
>>
>>380363429
As I recall in both Mario 3d land and 3d world, you can max out your life counter on the second level. In both games. It's ridiculous. Might as well get rid of lives.
>>
>>380364506
This is the shittiest reasoning I have ever read. Congrats.
>>
>>380375156
In Banjo Kazooie, once you started a long-fall animation you could not do any moves until landing.

Why not do THAT instead of removing it entirely?
