I think there's a smoothing option for ps2 games on PS3. you can turn that off and some games run faster. Just go in game and press the PS home button and it's one of the settings there. Dunno if that's with it on or off though.

fes gives you sp regeneration for going back the enterance, and as long as you fuse well you can always hit weaknesses. In P3, a knocked down enemy has to get back up before it can attack again, stun locking them. If you set your party to do nothing, you can stunlock everything forever.
