As someone who lives in the states, I can say the number one reason people own an Xbox is because they want to play with their friends who also own xboxes. They wanted complete control of the Nintendo Playstation and forced Nintendo into finalizing the deal by announcing it.
Then they joined the console race out of spite and essentially usurped Segas position.
Then the PS2 was insanely obtuse to develop for and killed off some smaller developers.
The PS3 had feature after feature after feature removed with every subsequent iteration.
Then the PS4 introduced paid online and set it as a standard and now they won't allow crossplay.
