How come graphics have evolved so much but combat and game mechanics

Gameplay has evolved heavily. Try playing Battlefield 2 after playing Battlefield 1.

>weapon and vehicle customization non existent
>map and level design extremely simplistic
>no level destruction
>no vaulting over things
