After this looked so disappointing I decided to play Ultimate Spider-Man for the first time. I'm several hours in.

Anyone who thinks Ultimate Spider-Man is the best spider-game is just a huge Venom fan right? Spider-Man 2 (movie), Web of Shadows, and Shattered Dimensions are all better than this.

Eh, I loved both Spider-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man as a kid, I replayed Ultimate recently, and I was a little disappointed, it really feels like a watered down Spider-Man 2. But it's still fun to play, and I like the graphics

Ultimate is a watered down SM2 with Venom thrown in so people wouldn't notice. It reuses the exact same random crime missions and even a few animations. The combat is much worse in Ultimate than SM2.

WoS has the best combat and wall crawling of any Spider-Man game. Throw in the fact it actually has wall crawling combat and switching between ground, wall, and air combat is super fluid, you end up with a game much better than Ultimate. Better swinging too.
