The problem with the game is the rabids and the problem with the rabids is how obnoxious they are while trying to be funny.

If they left the rabids out of the spotlight and work the humor off of the Nintendo characters, it could be ok. I dare to say it could even have some laughs here and there.

Those two series sold countless games on the back of simply being on the cover.

But I digress. Let's talk realisticaly for a moment.
Personaly I think something so "out there" like different eras and time travel in the way you're sugesting would make games worse. I just appreciate some sort of consistency with theme, but that's just me.
Also, I'd play the shit out of a tactical RPG with tons of waifus (provided it wasn't boring like Agarest). Hell, I'd pay good money for a straigh up porn tactical RPG.
But those games aren't viable for companies with any pretense of long term business success, so it's almost impossible to happen as a game with high production value.

If you're looking for a game with a more... ambitious setting and theme, those already exist in the form of Fire Emblem, XCOM and shit like that.
You might question that a crossover like this has no appeal to justify its existence, but I'd say it fills a niche much more viable than trying to go up aganist those heavy hitters, specialy in a genre so impregnated with elitism.

This game reminds me of Pit People, which aganist all odds managed to become a decent Tactical RPG that's more relaxed and funny instead of that hardcore, gritty/edgy experience we usualy get in this genre.
If this crossover ends up being something like that I'll be very pleased.

These maps look really really boring. About as generic as level design can get. Ubisoft doesn't seem to realize how important elevation is in nu-XCOM. These flat lifeless environments aren't doing it for me. Maybe they will become more "complex" as the game goes on, but this is a fucking Rabbids/Mario crossover, so I'm expecting it to be baby-easy throughout.
