Why is realism so fucking popular? I always hear people bitch about hating life, so why would you want games to emulate it?

Because teenage boys make up a large portion of the market and at that age a lot of them see colorful stuff as childish and they're looking for something they consider mature. They're becoming adults and looking at things they think adults should enjoy.

I'm not being condescending, because it's a phase I definitely went through as a boy. I didn't necessarily consider colorful games to be gay/childish but my interests gravitated toward games like Resident Evil and Armored Core.
