A few years after The Hobbit, a dying ranger got possessed by the ghost of the elf that taught Sauron how to forge Rings in the first place. Both of them want revenge against Sauron so they are raising armies of brainwashed orcs to defeat him. They also forge a new Ring of Power, call themselves the Bright Lord, obviously setting up a "power corrupts" story.
In terms of lore, it expands on Mordor and Orc civilization, as well as that of the men of Gondor around it. Sauron and the Nazgul also display more personality than they did in the books or movies.

There's some debate on whether all orcs were irredeemably evil, actually. I think Tolkien himself struggled with the concept, because as a Christian, he didn't like the idea of people being beyond redemption.

More to the point, though, using evil to fight evil doesn't make it good, and I seriously hope the devs have at least picked up on that very important aspect of LotR.
