Who's ready to install Windows 10 and play all those xbox games!

The PC gaming master race all have Windows 10 installed, why don't you upgrade to Windows 10 by Microsoft?

Haha Xbox Onix BTFO right guys!!
>>
>>380018096
I really hate Windows 10. I'm gonna try and stay on 7 as long as I can. Hopefully some modders will come out with some stuff that can spoof all the shit you need from 10 onto 7 or even 8. Something happened like that the last time Microsoft tried to force and OS upgrade on gamers (vista)
>>
>>380018203
Why don't you just upgrade my man? It was literally F R E E! Don't you want all those exclusive Xbox games?

Just do it. Install Windows 10 and play all those games consolefags think are exclusive!

You mean the Apple-lite fags?

W7 Ultimate x64 > W8.1 > XP > Vista > 10

>>380018203
Same here.
Luckily, all the GOOD devs that matter are already embracing Vulkan, which is not HW nor SW locked.

Any and all "Windows Store exclusives" have been, and will be pure trash. Anything worthwhile will be on GOG & Steam, and most likely patch-able to run on older systems, thanks to now almost a decade old, wide spread 64-bit OS'es.

At this point you're just parroting a shit meme. Anyone who has a legitimate reason to stay on the older OS versions wouldn't be boasting about it. So you're either someone who missed the free upgrade, some internet retard who get tricked by the "le 10 is bad meme", or just a poorfag on an old hand-me-down machine that has an older OS installed.

No son. You're the gullible moron / a literal fucking marketer.

Newer ain't always synonym with "better", and W10 has already been proven numerous times to be straight out DANGEROUS. On top of that, the GUI is absolutely disgusting, way too much important shit is literally hidden or not at all customizable anymore, compatibility with older software and games is worse, and majority of the implied "speed improvements" are literal placebo effects caused by people doing a fresh install, often even having a new PC.

Finally, I completely detest the business practice MS is now driving with their OS. That alone is good enough reason the stay the fuck away from the Wontworks 10.

Some of my family members had their PCs and laptops automatically ""upgraded"" to W10 couple years ago, without their input or acceptance, and it was one helluva job to get them back to their original state. For some , the OS had even changed the language of the entire system!

I think you're just computer illiterate. With Pro I was able to completely disable automatic updates.

-DX12 is only on W10
-W7 and eventually 8/8.1 are no longer supported and eventually games (and beyond that, software) will no longer support them either

Your resistance to change is understandable but it's simply that. Things change, it moves forward. W10 does some shady things, yes, but a lot of the hate is largely misplace and/or remedied by someone with some computer knowledge. Hell, half the stuff I'm sure you can just figure out how to do by googling a simple guide.

All I can say is have fun on your dying OS while you still can, eventually you'll have to upgrade anyways.

You can use it to play games released post-2020, at which point there's a higher risk of SOME newer games not supporting W7 out of the box anymore, yet the expanded use of Vulkan will allow playing most of the big titles without succumbing to DirectX requirements.

>>380023139
>With Pro I was able to completely disable automatic updates.
More like toggle off announcements of data transfer, including software updates. MS still has direct access to your PC, unless you do voodoo on your router's side. Which may result your OS self-destructing after a set period of time.

>DX12
literal fucking meme, like DX10 was.
Meanwhile, DX9 is still widely utilized, with DX11 only recently starting to see more widespread use as the main choice for games.

And again, both OGL and Vulkan are rising in popularity, thanks to clear performance benefits.

>-W7 and eventually 8/8.1 are no longer supported
MS' "support" has meant jack shit since the SP releases, and I've kept all automated updates OFF ever since the first news about forced telemetry shit surfaced.

Obviously at SOME POINT the latest software publications will no longer work (out of the box) on W7 and up, but that is unlikely to happen just over night. I know people and offices that still use Windows XP, and they can run majority of latest programs just fine.

And when the time to move on really arrives, Linux will be my choice. I could already run majority of my entire Steam library on Linux systems, and I can only assume the support to improve and expand during the following years. DX11 is already being implemented into Wine, and Vulkan is gaining popularity as we speak.

>Your resistance to change is understandable but it's simply that.
Delusional pseudo-intellectual excuses "trend follower" kids and/or shills spew whenever criticism is not in their favor.

I'm all for change. But not ALL change is for the better. Excuse me that I value my privacy and transparency in business life.

>>
Can someone please explain what's the deal with newest CPUs? Can they really only work with W10 or Unix or is it jus some unimportant exclusive features?
>>
>>380024448
They work fine with windows 7, but you get no extra new features or any kind of support.
Basically microsoft is saying "let me spy you or go linux".
>>
>>380024027
>Excuse me that I value my privacy and transparency in business life.
As do I but it is basically impossible to do that nowadays. If you really, absolutely care about it you'd be making your own software and using your own OS.

My whole point is that the majority of the people spouting the "W10 is bad" meme are people that just parrot an opinion without the understanding behind it, or they have sour grapes about their own situation and just shit on it. And I also believe that that issue extends beyond the whole W10 issue and extends to /v/ culture as a whole.

Just chill out, and start thinking rationally and be informed in your decisions.

I'll prolly start dual-booting W7 and a Linux of some sort a couple or so years from now on, if not even later.

However, if MS is sticking to their old statements, there may never be a "W11"; they've been quite serious about making W10 into an everlasting SERVICE, which is expanded and customized via nonstop updates.

Enterprise LTSB is pretty good, if with a few quirks. Like officially not supporting the latest VS if you're doing development on it and a need of a full OS reinstall if you want to move to a new OS update branch (1603, 1608, 1703 etc). You can even install manually WStore if you want it for some reason. You'd still need ShutUP10 to disable telemetry completely even with all settings and group policies turned off.

I've also used Steam on many machines of my relatives, so all this data keeps morphing out into something not quite right.

No one can guarantee that MS won't silently re-enable all this shit and add piles of new one with every minor update. The system is defective by design.

Just reading the description of the stuff in the list can be enlightening. For example, they can remotely change your OS settings if they find out you haven't been using some feature to force you do it.

>>380037227
Only because it uses a log-out + sleep hybrid for its "shut down" procedure. The hyped faster boot times are a placebo effect caused by brand new systems / fresh installs resulting overall snappier feel for the first few months. If you really care about faster OS load times, get an SSD.
>>
>>380036849
Yes, though it depends.

If you're the type of gamer who absolutely has to pay $60 on day one for every new AAA game from EA, then no GNU/Linux isn't for you.
If you're the type who is ok with waiting a while until a game is cheap then you'll probably do a lot better.
Due to the current demographics of the Linux community some genres are way better represented than others, there's tons of hardcore strategy games and old school shooters for instance, but few driving games or fighting games unless you count older games played through emulation.

I've already made the switch, and while yeah there are some games I miss it didn't actually cut that much from my backlog.

Out of the relationship between you, Microsoft, and your doctor, your doctor is the only one of the three beholden to it. Also, it's not just Microsoft who snoops like that, it's everyone. Google, Yahoo, iCloud, whatever. They all have the ability to peek at your shit and share it with others. You can find some services like ProtonMail who hold themselves to a standard, but there's no legal obligation to actually adhere to that standard.

If anything, by sending that information to you through email that he hadn't personally encrypted end-to-end, your doctor is the one who violated HIPAA.
>>
>>380038356
Yes, but with limits.

Right now support for D3D11 is still brand new, and while maturing rapidly still can't provide a good experience for running Windows games since you'll experience severe performance degradation due to D3D11 having an extremely non-standard workflow that is difficult to wrap to standard APIs. Next-gen wrappers built using Vulkan will help address this, but they don't exist yet and even when they do its not clear if the upstream Wine devs will accept them due to their being Mac users forcing Wine to stick with OpenGL 4.1 relying on 'compatibility' profile crap which doesn't always work well on GNU/Linux.

For D3D9 games though you can get full performance if you have an AMD card and the unofficial Linux-exclusive open drivers which not offer much better performance in OpenGL, but also native D3D9 support, this also requires a patched version of Wine to get around the Mac-centric restrictions but there are Wine management tools that make this trivial.

Its best to think of Wine like DOSbox. Its a good way to scratch the itch for some old games, for newer games you really want native Vulkan versions.

Nvidia are assholes who don't really allow unofficial drivers like AMD do, so the open source drivers are basically unusable for gaming, but their official closed source driver is essentially the same as the Windows one.

OpenGL performance is decent, same as on Windows (not that you'd really use it on Windows) and is about on par with the open source RadeonSI driver for AMD hardware, and much faster than AMD's official driver on either platform.
Vulkan performance is same as on Windows.

For Wine there's a different method to improve performance that is generally now enabled by default, but it can only manage 60%-80% performance unlike the 99%+ that the native support Gallium Nine offers.

Should mention that for Vulkan games Wine does support just passing it through to the native drivers which makes it fast, but so far there's only one Windows-only Vulkan game with the majority of Vulkan titles being cross-platform or with Vulkan support that is Linux-exclusive.

Valve actually just updated SteamOS dropping AMD's official driver in favor of the much faster and less problematic open source one.
Games still need to be ported to Linux to run on SteamOS, if a game is designed properly and uses Vulkan across platforms this will be fairly trivial, though even if a dev uses Vulkan its still possible for publishers to stand in the way of Linux versions like EA and Zenimax do with studios that bought out which used to be Linux-friendly.

The older (and better) games from those studios are still Linux native though, and still work on modern distros.

Its actually fairly hard to get counted as a Linux user. You can't use Steam in Wine, a VM, or dual boot. The the majority of Linux gamers are doing at least one of those regularly.
Steam only counts you once on your account and tries to present the survey on your most commonly used setup which leads to lots of Linux users reporting they got the Steam survey 'that one time' they started Steam in Wine or used it in Windows.
Also should note that SteamOS is not presented with the survey and not represented in the numbers at all.

Still yeah, its probably close to 2%, 3% max. Still consider how large the Steam user base is and even 1% is at least a million active users who are exclusively using GNU/Linux for gaming on Steam. That's not bad considering at the start it was only about a hundred thousand users.

Some distros like Mint don't ship up to date drivers in a timely manner, and don't have a community that can step up. Mint is supposed to be fairly similar to Ubuntu so the Ubuntu community PPAs for drivers may work but wouldn't be reliable like the official Mesa Stable PPA for Ubuntu is.

Should also mention that only the official Ubuntu spins are officially supported by most game devs.

>They know that third party software floats 95% of their business installations.
Businesses are being given tools to add software to and manage their own local versions of the WIndows Store.
Businesses want 10 S since it will mean cheaper and easier to manage systems for the majority of their users where they don't have to worry about the elderly baby boomers clicking on a attachment and accidentally running an exe.

>That Store Only prompt is for their Chromebook competitor OS
False, its in the standard version of Windows, its just not enabled by default yet. In a few years time due to the incentive for OEMs to ship 10 S it will probably be on the majority of new Windows systems.

>Chromebooks are Chrome Store only too
Also false. Chromebooks use Gentoo GNU/Linux under the hood. Its trivial to run a traditional GNU/Linux environment on Chromebooks along side ChromeOS.
This along with the Android app compatibility on some newer Chromebooks has made them very popular dev machines.

We need to talk, let us calm down and look at the newest reveal about paid mods. I think it is a good step forward for a better gaming industry. It is healty no matter how much you don't like it. In the end it helps people, gamer like you or the Player to create and profit from his creation. "Content creator" need to be established as a worthwhile job in our society. This is just the first step and with a growing, divers and open platform we got in the gaming industry we might see more change to come. This is another point, you, the gamer, should start to learn to tolerate that because there is no way back. I mean, do you really believe Bethesda is going to do a 180° turn? Do you really hope that a Multi-Billion Dollar Industry just drop all their PR risk? This is the current state now, at least the Player understood it and i hope you will understand this too. Said with that, let us reconsider the model of "Paid Mods" I know you do not like it but try at least for a few moments to think about it how it could be better. What need to change on you or how could you change, how can we help you to change ....and so on...vise versa... that you can live and support this new model. Not that we need you, but it would be nice to have you continue in this hobby and support it.

I kept the old version around that didn't require you to login but every time you update your graphic card drivers it uninstalls the current version, even if you tell it to not install the new one.

Then I did some googling and people say that GFE intentionally makes your games run worse before you 'optimise' them.

The settings literally have no effect on telemtry, ad serving connections, and group policy settings. Not even blocking connections in hostfile solves most of the connection problems, although you can block ads in stuff like skype that way.

>anyone who has a legitimate reason to stay on the older OS versions
As a rule of thumb for computing (or software development for that matter), if something is working as intended and gives you 100% functionality DO NOT CHANGE IT. If you change/upgrade something that is 100% functional the best case scenario is it continues to give 100% functionality and nothing has changed. The worst case scenario is something breaks and now it's your fault and you need to fix it. If something is working, do not change it, the end.
>but in order to play <new game> I need W10!
That is an example of a problem where you would upgrade. W7 would no longer be giving you 100% functionality at that point and you could start looking into whether upgrading would be worth it (whether the risk of damage outweighs the potential gain). W7 still does 100% of what I need so I have no reason to upgrade.
>>
>>380050818
Ok but the vast majority of home users don't have volume licensing for enterprise versions ofwindows, or use cracked versions of windows, so kind of a moot point. Also, doesn't solve the reinstallation of software, ignoring telemetry and group policy settings, or automated whitelisting of unauthorized programs on the firewall (not that the firewall thing is a huge deal in an eterprise environment if you use a hardware firewall). You can block most of these connections at the router level but, surprise surprise, it breaks windows.
>>
I tried GFE once, was thoroughly unimpressed by how all it does is tweak grafix settings (i can do that myself) and that was all it did. Oh, I guess it alerted me when a new driver update was out, but since now I'm on an old card that would actually be bad for me since Nvidia drivers gimp any card that isn't their current line.
>>
>>380051068
It actually does solve the reinstallation of software as LTSB doesn't even have the store installed. If you don't want stuff to be reinstalled I believe there are settings that disable it but I'm not really sure since I haven't used the consumer version of Windows 10 since the 1507 build. Also is there any proof as to it ignoring group policy settings? As far as I'm aware all the group policy settings that I changed are in effect.

it was just one class we had to take about troubleshooting windows and helping clients 'upgrade' their pcs. i'm 99% sure the program im in is funded by microsoft, even more sure after i've leared how bill gates keeps sticking his hands in american education and is one of the biggest pushers of common core

>>380054756
thats what he said, i think you have to really connect the pcs like actual file transferring, not just have them use the same internet connection
>>

You are now merely pretending to be retarded by suggesting this update is mandatory.
>>
>>380055661
If it works for you and does what you need, don't change unless you just want to try something new. I'm still using Mint and have been for 4 or 5 years now, and don't really see a need to change. I'm sure I could do super1337 shit with other distros but thats too much effort.

The Diagnostic and Telemetry service collects diagnostics information about functional issues on Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP).

Windows 10 user here. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS GARBAGE. I hate this OS so damn much, but I can't find a reliable cracked version of 7 or 8. I'd switch to Linux, but support for games is very limited.

If you still have a copy of 7 or 8, treasure it. It's the remnant of a decent OS.

If you want to play DX12 and play W10 only games there's an easy solution, install Win 10 LTSB, it can only be pirated unless you are part of an industry that uses (military, banks, hospitals etc) it has no ads and other bullshit from the get go, it installs only the critical security updates and has next to no telemetry since there's no user data to be gathered from the people that can acquire this license.
>>
>>380056928
How about no, you can feign intellectual superiority over me not reading your petty arguments before responding but you still use deprecated operating systems that harm the user more than help it, so in the end you're still a retard.

win7 is not deprecated, its still officially supported by ms, how the fuck does it harm its users?
>>
>>380057139
Oh there's user data that can be gathered. But if they had that in LTSB it wouldn't be legal: It wouldn't pass HIPPA and other various legal technology standards that are out there.

Once you strip down most of the bloat it is almost on par with pre 8.1 8. Cortana bullshit and stuff like that is easily 'mostly' disabled. It still doesn't feel streamlined or agile at all though. What a chunky mess of an OS.

Look, Windows 10 is objectively better than 7, 8 and 8.1. But the only reason W10 was free is because they're pushing that big marketplace dick up your ass. They're putting out versions of W10 that only work with the store apps and they want to avoid people using services like Steam. That's why they're pushing all this "Xbox Anywhere" shit.
Apple have been doing it for years and Microsoft fucked up long ago. They're trying to recoup some lossses by making these aggressive deals.
>>
>>380058908
there's nothing wrong with the store tho
>>
>>380058321
Just install the march security update manually and you're good
>>
>>380018096
Already have upgraded. I'm not a big fan of having to play games from the store though, but it's more of a inconvenience than an issue though.
It's a good move for Microsoft putting games onto PC though. Wish more companies would do it.
