Favourites:
- Pokemon Heartgold
- Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story
- Paper Mario & The Thousand Year Door
- Super Paper Mario
- Persona 4
- Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse

Literally just finished SMT IV neutral route an hour ago. Found it slightly more frustrating than SMT IV Apocalypse due to the lack of refinements and bullshit Challenge quest grinding to continue the main story, but I still enjoyed it a lot especially the morality themes of the story. Felt like the ending was a bit rushed though, I thought there was going to be one more big boss after Lucifer.

Gonna continue with my SMT Nocturne save, and then go through the DDS and Raidou games before SJ Redux and SMT Switch come out.
>>
>>379937613
How is nocturne? I just finished smt 4/4A and seems like nocturne is the big one in the smt series. I really liked the themes/story and atmosphere of smt 4
>>
>>379938009
Not him but it's really good, probably my favourite in the series
>>
>>379936238
OP, what are your favorites, what are you playing?
>>
>>379938009
I'm past the Matador battle, just before the thor battle.

It's a little unrefined, analysing an enemy requires 2MP and a turn, can't seem to find a way to view descriptions of demon skills outside of battle, and the battles are random encounters.

I think if you liked IV or really any other Megaten game though you'll like Nocturne's themes and story. If you can put up with these gameplay differences the game is still fun.

Just finished Persona 5. I'm thinking about playing either Soul Hackers or Tales of the Abyss next.

Off the top of my head favorites would probably be FF6, Pokémon Diamond, Mother series, SMT Nocturne.

I'm playing I am Setsuna for the first time. It's comfy, but it doesn't have me super hooked so far.
>>
>>379939964
What does Pokemon Diamond have over the other entries?
>>

Probably just nostalgia but i like the setting, soundtrack, and alot of the pokemon designs in sinnoh the best.

>what are your favorites
At this point I've played too many to be able to pick absolute favorites.

>what have you played recently
Most recent JRPG was Trails in the Sky: The 3rd.

>what are you looking forward to
In terms of what's on my list? Zero and Ao no Kiseki, but I'm putting them off for months so I can play some non-JRPGs for a while. Then the Trails of Cold Steels. Skies of Arcadia and Dragon Quest XI at some point, probably before I get back to Trails.

Persona 1 was great. My first Persona and my favored one, I played 1-5 last year.

It's okay, it's not intolerably bad but it has its charms, I'd say play it if you are curious about how it all started, it gives you a lot of insight into the Persona world.

I liked it, but old graphics and mechanics don't disgust me. I admit that it's rough, but I just liked it the most. Had a certain feel that was lost later on. Persona 2 was great too.

It's fantastic at tone and atmosphere and the story is slightly different from the usual mainline SMT stuff. Great game but I personally didn't like it as much as most of mainline.

II > IV:A = SJ > Nocturne > IV > I

Weird to think there's actually six mainline games now. For the longest time it was like 3 and SJ kinda.
>>
>>379943186
It was a lot less ambitious than most Persona games but I feel like it does what it set out to do a lot better than most. At the very least I liked it better than 2, which is by no means bad but heavily overrated around here.

The combat in 1 is bad, though, and that's not even something to be argued about.

Playing through Bravely Default right now.

The writing is fucking abysmal, I'm at the start of chapter 3 and I really don't care about anything. I still think it's funny how often the game will kill off "characters" you literally just met for cheap drama.

Combat is fun and varied but I definitely feel like the job system has issues. Some are so much worse compared to others. Monk is better than Knight in every single way. Thief is trash, etc, etc.

The difficulty spikes are unreal, too. I'm playing on hard, so I expect some grinding, but normal leveling does little and it's a 50/50 on whether or not a job level does anything, so my grinding can be for nothing.

On the other hand, I love the way the sub scenarios work, even if the plots are a bit half baked, and I enjoy the little world building I actually get from them.

The Nordende rebuilding aspect is really fun, although I wish there were other ways to get workers, especially with the 3DS slowly dying.

Edea a best
>>
I just tried Tales of Berseria and I didn't really like it that much. Broke out of the Prison and I lost interest. Any if JRPGS I should try. I was kinda looking at Persona 3 but people told me that is boring too.

That's what I felt like. If they were just a bit shorter I think they'd be better. It's not like I hate long games, I played Dragon Quest VII for 138 hours and enjoyed most of it, but Persona 3+ just feel too long.

>>379948474

>Madarame's palace boss was the last time the game excited me and actually forced me to git gud.

This also mirrors my thoughts. After that it just wasn't as interesting except in a few places and toward the very end.

Right now I am playing my first SMT game, Soul Hackers. I was interested in it for the atmosphere but honestly it isn't as cool as I thought it would be. I'm a bug fan of sci fi and cyberpunk but this is just kind meh. i do enjoy the dungeon crawling though.

Dragon Quest XI only really. I'm thinking if a Switch version gets announced I probably will get one for that and hopefully buy stuff as time goes on. Though that one game shown last year, Project Octopath, looked interesting so hopefully some information on that is shown.

it's weird. It took me forever to get the hang for the elemental point system. The game isn't too hard for the most part tho, I feel like either I accidentally overleveled in the woods early on getting lose and triggering battles or I the game is just real easy at first for the most part.

Tips:
Unless you want to get skills as fast as possible you can just allocate points evenly across elements on level ups and gradually learn stuff.
Heal party members when they take big damage as soon as possible since ur Life points (LP) is tied to your ability to act each turn.
Game has hidden stuff all over the place so always search corners hidden from view or random objects in new places.

Finished Persona 5 after 101 hours. Never again am I playing a Persona game. Too much tedium and filler. It feels like a huge weight is off my shoulder and I am free now.

I meant that I replay games rather than playing anything I haven't played before.

>>
>>379951786
Nocturne's battle system is a more complex, leagues more difficult version of P5s. The extra turn system is fleshed out, and instead of a cast of teenagers as your party members it's a bunch of demons.
>>
>>379951978
It kinda felt like I was guessing for weaknesses the entire time
>>
>>379952140
just remember them
>>
>>379951786
It has similarities but it isn't exact. You have your main character and up to three summon-able demons. Each player on the field that you have grants you a turn on your action phase. Like in Persona 5 when you net a critical or hit an enemy weakness you will gain a turn. Though in Nocturne it will turn a regular turn into a half turn. So the maximum amount of times you can act on your action phase is up to eight times. Though you can lose turns as well if an enemy is immune, drains, or repels an attack, or if you miss your attack. That will drain two turns.

In the short of it, it is the same concept but more expanded upon.
>>
>>379952140

Oh well nocturne is even worse about that, but there's a scan move if you can't deal with it

Not really. It has higher base damge and is good on defaulting enemies. Ranger is a great mob killer.

Theif with or without Bow Lore will do way better on human boesses. Theif will also do heavy damge on just about anything once it get's god speed strike.

If you do use Ranger, have sword magic as sub. The magic will stack with slayer moves.

Others have already answered you. I say just give it a shot. I like it more than One More. It will be the most straight forward fight you will do. Debilitate, buff attack and defense. I say don't bother with evasion because it never seemed like he missed anyways. Bring a full party heal skill and some MP recovery items and you are set.

I don't mind the art (however the in-game visuals are atrocious), but the issue is that the gameplay is pure garbage. It's one of the worst SRPGs I've ever played.

Even if you blame the bad writing on the localizers , Summon Night 5 was a pretty bad SRPG. The gameplay was pretty simple and maps were bland so the game was just really dull and tedious. Is SN3 just better in terms of story or is the level design also much better?

Breath of Fire I and II are good but VERY flawed games. Breath of Fire I is very simple game, it kind of has that early charm that DQI and FFI has. Breath of Fire II is a weird case. It has some great aspects such as nice, detailed art, pretty good character designs, a unique story for it's time, and some great really interesting sidequests (one such as having a carpenter make a town for you) but the problem lies in the gameplay. The game has a absurd encounter rate and the dungeons are extremely tedious to navigate. Backtracking is also pretty common which is annoying.

Personally I recommend trying BoFIII and BoFIV first and maybe returning to BoFI and BoFII later on. They're good games but just lack polish.
>>

Well III is a great jrpg, even today it is a phenomenal jrpg that most modern jrpgs can't compare to. III is most well known for it custom party system, and in a way effectively it's job system, so I think VII might be for you. About 20 hours into VII you will be able to have your characters change classes, this system is moderately deep as each class has seperate stats and skills and master a combination of lower classes allow you to access to higher classes. Still though, what were your favorite aspects of III? VII might be a little rough for someone not familiar with DQ, there is a lot going on in that games.

I'm thinking of playing either Nocturne, SMTIV, or Xenogears. What would you folks recommend?

At release everyone was jerking it off as a return to classic FF and saying it is the new great jrpg and the best of the decade.

SMTIV is pretty friendly if you're more of a newer player. Xenogears is a pretty weird game. It's budget got fucked over so the second disk is a mess and basically a VN.
>>
>>379956110

If it had to be one of these three probably nocturne, but what kind of experience are you looking for exactly
>>
>>379955175
Actually the gameplay was my main problem. I really felt like 60% of the skills were useless, and I ended up using the same strategy from chapter 5 to 8 (even doing all the rematches).

I kind of liked the the new jobs on Bravely Second though, might give it a try.
>>

Boy, it has been a while. Don't think I don't appreciate the response. I loved the feel of exploration and just being out a quest. Adventuring and battling. I can't cite specific examples because it's been 30(?) years or so since I played it. I'm gonna have to pick up some of the later games.

What I look for are the flowing

>Must have:

debuffs and buffs matter
elemental affinities
can select party members
each party member fills a class role or niche
you gain skills by some system other than just leveling up
consumables are useful
more than one type of biome (forest, mountains, plains, snow)
zoology must make sense (elves and bugs in forest, dragons in volcanos.

>Nice but not must have:

Gear treadmill with enhanceable/enchantable gear
Sprite based visuals
gain skills by spending points (like EO)
some kind of crafting system
more than one way to get from x to y
comfy snow areas with small village
caves and nooks and crannies that are just there with no connection to the story
weapons are not just stat sticks
party with 4 character
unlockable travel forms

>good extras:

Cute girls
Changeable costumes
Female protagonist
All female party is possible

Buffs/debuffs actually often are quite useful in DQ games. I admit it is definitely really only for boss battles but still.

I think you might like VII, it is my personal favorite game in the series. As I said in >>379955815 you later get a job system. You level up your job and slowly master them after completing a specific number of battles. As you master classes new better classes open up to you. For example, if you master the pirate and thief classes then you can become the pirate class and so on. Personally I really love the sense of slow progression and slowly seeing my characters grow more and more towards my ultimate goal and final class for them.

Though do note, VII is VERY long. It should take about 100-110 hours to complete. Still though I love it and highly recommend it.

Unless you have an autistic level of attraciton to mecha, or you really enjoy Xenogears' story and world then you probably won't tolerate the gameplay.

Each game is fairly short with not a whole lot of meat to it, the interconnectivity between them is rather pointless as even if you get the most high end equipment in a game by beating the secret hidden super boss, that equipment will be outperformed by vendor trash 1 hour into the next game

The story and mythos are pretty interesting, but overall the games are pretty unpolished and not as deep and dark as they'd like to believe

Still good for a spin tho if you're looking for something different, it certainly is an experience you cannot find in other games
>>
>>379958662
To get stronger you have to just fight. Depending on what skill set you use then those body parts will get stronger. Throw a lot of right hooks? Your right arms offense will go up.

Fighting is another story since you need to read the manual for all the actions. You usually wait for your green meter to fill, the fuller the more damage your attack does, but you cannot do an attack when it is red since it hasn't charged up enough. Press A, then select what skill you want. To do a grapple you have to press R then your character will latch onto them then you press A to do a grapple skill. Depending if you are in front or behind them you will perform different moves.

After that it is just your positioning compared to the enemies and what skill you will use. Usually if you see the enemy dashing at you it is the best time to attack since they won't be able to stop in time to actually react to you punching them, often knocking them off their feet.

FF games are pretty good about always hiding enough advanced systems to allow a smart player to clear then at the lowest possible level, that's always been part of their design philosophy

SMT games aren't that well designed generally, they just throw a bunch of shit at you and expect you to overpower it. There's really not much you can do besides have challenge-appropriate stats

Oh boy, here's a tip for the end game:If you don't learn how to break the game with the job system, you'll have to grind your ass off until until you're eventually Lv.99 and even that won't save you against a certain boss who will be impossible even if you have the absolute best gear, you'll still have no chance of winning against that certain boss unless you come up with a broken party. The boss fight can only go one of two ways, it'll either be bullshit hard, or piss easy.

>Regarding the Atelier series, where do the new/casual games start?

The causal shit starts at Rorona (the first of the Arland series), then gets worse in Dusk (the second of the ps3 series) and Mystery(first of the ps4 series) can't even be called Atelier games imo. Violet was the pinnacle of the series, think jrpg + crafting items + dungeon crawling + recettear, with a great cast and a good story. Lots of towns, monsters, hidden bosses, secret passages that open up to new shortcuts

If you are just starting try New Rorona Plus on the ps3(has all the extra content of the psv games). Vita games run like dog shit but have a few improvements over the ps3 games.

Shin Rorona plus on the 3ds has the best combat of all the arland games but it's japanese only.

>>379962842
Well first of all, you can't just throw bombs around nilly whilly in Gramnad, Dungeons have HP values and over using alchemy will cause the dungeon to collapse. Then there is the fact that running out of MP/HP/or LP will result in the character fainting, meaning that all kinds of builds are possible, add that to the fact that there are some monster that do no have HP or MP or LP (undead have no HP but you can kill them by making their MP go to zero for example) and you need build diversity. I also like that the game give you a taste of what this feels like, Pamela is a ghost and follows all the rules for undead, such as not having HP or LP. She uses her MP to attack and can drain MP, also her normal attack only does MP damage, her HP damage skill costs a bit of MP.

You will spend a bit of time crafting but it's always for cash or gear. You can't really beat the game without capping out on your levels and beating some hard bosses. I would even go to say that a bit of grinding is a must, or at least a bit of exploring. Also in Gramnad you can't avoid monsters it's a random chance encounter when you enter the next room of an area. So you constantly MUST fight or run. Even those encounters can be life or dead (no game over you just go to town) monsters are though as can inflict all kinds of status effects. You need to take healing items and the sort.

any recommended programs? also how long did it take you to be confident in your ability with it?
>>
>>379964620
What you see is pretty much what you get. It's one of my least favorite in the series. It is somewhat better on a higher difficulty though since you're pressured more to time your blocks and dodges correctly. But whether that's enough to get you to restart it is up to you.

Do other dungeon crawlers. Though I don't even know what you're looking for.
>>
>>379965590
The way I did it was:
1. Memorize hiragana and katakana
2. Read through Tae Kim, and while doing so, add all of the words he uses as examples in his grammar lessons to a custom Anki deck
3. Immediately start reading stuff, adding new words you see to your deck

Most people use a pre-built deck to grind vocabulary, and considering I can't go back in time and do that instead, I have no idea if it's a better method. I started reading manga and games 6 months after I started reading, but "reading" at that point took an extremely long time due to having to look stuff up in a dictionary constantly and then add it to my deck. I took a long break from doing this, so I can't say exactly how long it took (real-time it's been 3 years since I started, but as for time actively studying it's been about 1.5 years). Once I started playing games again in January this year, I got significantly faster and more confident and haven't spent a day without playing something since. It's going to depend on how much you read, the more you read the more comfortable you get.
>>
>>379966915
>I started reading manga and games 6 months after I started reading
I mean 6 months after I started learning. Woops.
>>
>>379965590
My only advice is don't get comfortable just because you can play games. I can play most games zero issues but can't follow a real japanese conversation for shit.
>>
>>379967125
Reading and listening are separate abilities. If you want to do the latter you have to practice it, and the best way to do that is probably to have actual conversations.
>>
>>379967342
Thing is reading is something where I can stop and look up the word I don't understand, write it a few times revisit my note book in a week and be good for the next time I encounter it. I literally have no system for when I don't understand a word, and some times I can't even understand what I don't understand, as in I can't isolate the word I don't know. I listen to random shit on youtube all the time and can't follow. I can understand video games and anime well enough but i think it's because voice actors have better enunciation than 90% of japanese.

For BoFII get the snes version and the retranslation patch. The original release as handled by Capcom and is considered maybe the worst localization of any jrpg. I recommend looking it up, it's amazing how much they fucked up.

For BoFIII just go with the ps1 version. The psp version has arguably a better soundtrack as it use more instruments but certain scenes were removed or edited and it has some slowdown issues.

Good read. This is the guy who did the Mother 3 fan translation, he runs this site where he looks at certain changes to games for localization. He doesn't cover every thing as it would be way too much to say specifically but you can just see that whoever handled this had no idea what the fuck they were doing.
