That was just some streetpass info swapping thing that doesn't even do anything in game. There's a third gender option that was originally Terror in Japanese so all of its rank titles are different types of monsters. English calls it Other for some reason but its ranks are still monsters.

DLC isn't really bad. There's a lot of it but most of it is really ignorable besides MAYBE Rise of the Deliverance. The game without DLC is still as complete as it'd ever be as it still manages to have more content than the game it's based on with little to nothing cut.

There was one shitposter from back in the pre-release who insisted Hidari's art sucked because all the girls looked the same. He had some weird ideas about fanservice (he didn't think Lyn's legs were sexy at all) and how Hidari is supposed to be appealing to the otome crowd, with only dudes being hot and women being bland and generic. He disappeared once all the portraits leaked.

But other than that, everyone's liked Hidari's art; even if there are some who don't like it, it certainly isn't polarizing. Not anywhere close to Kozaki's.

And sales were not poor, since the game sold through its stock, and sold about as well as FE12 in the first week in Japan. It sold as much as Nintendo expected it to sell; this game was always supposed to be the inbetween game while they work on FE Switch. There's an interview about that.

Deen has better base stats, and is better from the start, and another dread fighter is likely better than another mage, especially considering the swamps coming up.

However, killing Sonya is tougher than Deen's map, and killing Deen gets you his brave sword earlier, which is handy for Grieth's map. And Sonya becomes pretty good once you level her.

Neither are so amazing that they'd become must have centers for your team, so just choose the one you like better.

Can we take a minute to talk about how great the villains are in this game?

Fernand and Berkut feel like they took Orson from Sacred Stones and split him in half. Fernand is the allied soldier who ends up betraying you shortly after he's introduced, but unlike Orson, we actually get to see what a noble person he was before he went turncoat. And by the time we meet him for the last time, it's clear that he deeply regrets what he's done to you.

Berkut, on the other hand, is amazing because of his personal vendetta against Alm. Unlike, say, Lundgren or Michalis, who try to seize power by murdering their relatives, Berkut doesn't even realize his relationship with Alm until after Rudolf is dead. By that point, he's gone too far off the deep end to accept Alm's offer of friendship, culminating with sacrificing Rinea for the sake of satisfying his own lust for power.

Speaking of Rinea, while she's not technically an antagonist, she still fits nicely into the Ishtar archetype, and in some ways even surpasses Ishtar herself. In FE4, Ishtar was a tragic figure because she was in love with Julius, but she still tried to put a stop to the Child Hunts. However, because we never got to see what Julius was like before Manfroy gave him the Loptyr tome, all of his interactions with Ishtar in-game seem more like an abusive relationship. We don't know why Ishtar fell in love with him in the first place. Unlike Julius, we actually get to see how much Berkut genuinely cares for Rinea, to the point that watching him fall off the deep end and sacrifice her to Duma comes across as genuinely shocking. This also provides another contrast to Ishtar: whereas Ishtar ultimately made her own decision to fight alongside Julius, Rinea was sacrificed against her will.

Mediocre as fuck from stat to finish. There's nothing interesting going on gameplay wise, any semblance of positioning or strategy boils down to put x unit on a terrain tile or send out one of your dread fighters to clean up half the map solo. There are no side objectives or anything to incentivize the player to actually get a move on, combined with the lack of anything resembling a fun map or objectives besides "rout x number of enemies", the game quickly starts wearing out its welcome. The dungeons are monotonous empty turds with no interesting encounters (or anything really), so you're just running around short corridors occasionally fighting the same two groups of enemies on the same empty square map. Overall the game is a tedious slog that gets by on its good presentation, non-offensive story, and a few decent mechanic tweaks like archers not being garbage.

Jedah, for example, is different from most other members of the Gharnef archetype because he's not just trying to resurrect Duma for the sake of doing something evil. He wants to resurrect Duma because he truly believes that Valentia cannot survive without Duma's influence. If it weren't for Jedah's stereotypical evil laughter or clear enjoyment from other people's suffering, I'd almost call him a tragic villain like Lyon or Sephirain.

Finally, that brings us to Duma. As the founder of the series' "evil god" archetype, he's also, ironically, one of the biggest subversions of it: he's a perfectly chill dude who's losing his ability to control his own power. All of his villainous actions throughout the game's backstory are merely his attempt to save the world from himself. Sort of like Anankos, except without a mind-bendingly retarded plot twist.
