My favorite RPG is Dragon's Dogma. Yeah it doesn't really have much actual role-playing, but I never gave a shit about that for the genre and jut preferred the gameplay.

gothics combat takes the perfect amount of influence from your stats, game knowledge, and player skill. enemies are all very pattern based so even if you stats arent all there you still notice yourself improving as you learn their pattern more. becoming more proficient with a weapon also adds to this as you become capable of doing longer attacks. A variety of enemies as well as the constant evolution of your proficiencies allow keep encounters fresh throughout the game. Rhythm-based hits adds skill and nuance to the system and further enhances the feeling of progression when you up your proficiency level.

another important thing is the sense of danger. because everything can kill you easily at first level, you become more willing to actually pay the bribes to avoid getting beat up and you learn to not just rush straight into every encounter. combat feels like an actual threat and this allows the world to be more than a series of xp nodes

I've played the fuck out of it and in no way is Gothic 2 better than Gothic 2. They are equal at best and at worst Gothic 2 is simply an inferior version of Gothic 2.

For example, in Gothic 2 you have an extremely detailed open world and varied quests with multiple outcomes.
But in Gothic 2 you are stuck with the nameless male protagonist with a preset voice and everything.
Gothic 2 had a beautiful world with high resolution textures and people that animate what they're doing, blacksmiths working the forge etc.
But Gothic 2 shit all over that with its low poly models, not even bothering to give people fingers, and terrible english voice acting.

Gothic 2 and Gothic 2 each have their respective strengths and weaknesses, but it is insane to suggest that Gothic 2 improved upon Gothic 2 in every way. I can even understand you personally preferring Gothic 2, but if you look at it objectively then Gothic 2 is simply a much better game.

Is gothic turn-based like Fallout 2 or real-time? Something like Dragon Age Origins?

Yes. Word of warning though, the controls are a little whacky and take some time to get used to. The games don't have level scaling either so if you go somewhere too early you WILL get your ass beat.

Maybe watch a quick intro to the combat as you will get btfo early game. Gothic 2 Notr is extremely harsh to new players.

But it's genuinely amazing. One of best cities in an rpg
