People said it would cost more because the implication was that Scorpio could play games at native 4K/60fps. The only game confirmed running in native 4K is Forza but it's at 30fps. My PC can do that with any game if I cap it at 30fps. I have serious doubts Scorpio will run 2017/2018/2019 games at 4K/60fps unless they get a massive graphical downgrade. You can't outclass a 1080ti for $500. Even with great optimization, it's just not possible. It will likely be last-gen titles that get remastered at 4K/60fps. Will a Scorpio play Cyberpunk 2077 at native 4K/60fps?

You would be right IF the majority of the market made decisions based on a reasonable projection of value. The console market is dominated by brand loyalty.

The only thing that has kept Nintendo from sinking was releasing ~a year ahead of sony and microsoft because it gave them a large cut of the people who don't want to wait and the people who are buying for someone else.

Microsoft is now moving into that niche and will take a minimum of half that demographic. Sony is pacing themselves and releasing on a traditional time frame which will give them a considerable advantage for next gen.

This only considers technology life cycle and product life cycle, there is still a massive X factor to consider. If either console has a huge defect, service issue or has a string of GOTYAY then that will drastically effect the balance of competition.

The X factor can't be accounted for from a business point of view which is why we know that microsoft releasing early is a sign that they are hedging their bets and when a manufacturer does not have confidence in their product it usually underperforms.

Both manufacturers have no interest whatsoever in rushing the next generation... They make most of their money at the end of a generation when the consoles no longer cost anything to make.

They make almost nothing early in a generation, hell Sony was even selling PS3s at a loss for a time.

We aren't getting a PS5 and Nextbox until 2020+. Hell probably even longer if they keep doing incremental increases.

Well guess that makes the good price point aspect a failure. They better have one hell of a hardware demonstration along with a damn good list of games coming for it or Scorpio is going to have a really rough reception.

Both consoles launched at right around cost. Since the Slim and Boner S released both companies have been making profit off of each hardware sale. That's why neither side wants to commit to an offiicial price increase and instead have opted for the "limited time $50 off" for holidays and right now before E3.

So going by just that they'd each be ready for next gen however soon it starts since they're both making money hand over fist. Definitely don't expect another 8 year gen. I bet we'll get PS5/Boner 2 by Holiday 2019. 6 years is the usual timespan for Sony.

Because at 499 at the CHEAPEST, and likely with a 599 SKU, Scorpio will be extremely profitable with high margin. There are customers willing to pay more, so MS will get money from them. That's how "premium" products work, and MS themselves used that word for Scorpio repeatedly.

Most people give zero shits about specs and instead look at the price and exclusives. Skipping exclusives because that's consolewar bullshit, $499 seems really fucking expensive to me for a console. Anything over $350 is DOA to me personally and 499 makes me think of Sony's 599 US DOLLARS, which is why the PS3 was such a gigantic blunder for so many years.

The true point is how much the normal X1 will cost now. If Scorpio is used also as a strategy of decoy pricing and the X1 go about $199 then those thinking about entering in the 8th gen will likely choose the X1 over the $250 normal PS4. And that niche that have the 4k tv will buy the scorpio to fully enjoy the 4k. This could work as a strategy to regain market

Sony is well aware of how many consoles they are selling compared to XB1. They haven't dropped the price only because they are happy with current sales. They already won this gen so massive price cutting is pointless.

Technology life cycle, Sony's next gen will also be tuned for 4k. Granted, sony's development cycle will line up better for 4k tvs but both are developing for the new generation so microsoft has to design for 4k tvs even though they aren't popular.
