The Wii U sold decently during its launch too and then Nintendo outright ignored it for a year in order to salvage the 3DS, which was struggling after launch until a batch of titles started flowing through.

Nintendo absolutely needs to do more in order to keep the momentum going and push it further. So far, their staggered release is a good enough winning strategy. One game a month works well and it helps that all of them so far have been multiplayer based games with infinite replayability. That's enough time to keep you occupied until the next one hits.

Wii was a massive success but that was partly due to clever marketing, and Wii Sports. 3rd parties ignored it since they couldn't port their PS3/360 projects on it. The drought on it existed but had no effect on sales due to bundled game being good enough.

The Wii U was abysmal. The only thing it received was year old ports of games that didn't even make use of it's features in a significant way. No one would buy the Wii U version of a game over the other competition's version, and if you liked that sort of shit from third parties, you weren't going to get your fill. You had to wait for games from Nintendo, and they sure as fuck weren't putting crap out.

The reason why artificial scarcity works for Nintendo is because there's really no alternative.

If you've decided to buy a Nintendo console, it's not because you want any video game device. You want specifically Nintendo games, otherwise why would you even want a Nintendo device in the first place? Once a consumer is down that road, they're not turning around, even if they can't find one. Not being able to find one just reestablishes the fact that their desire is justified since they perceive the lack of stock as demand and not supply issues, and think other people want one too so they're more comfortable that they made the right choice
