Yeah - I read an action button article that talked about how generally speaking Japanese game designers tend to view levels as just a backdrop for the game mechanics, rather than developed elements of the games themselves. Whether or not this holds true in general, never has it been more apparent than in Armored Core.

It's a pity, too - the mech customisation and combat has always been excellent/nuanced in ways that I have not seen repeated in any other series. It's that fine line between fluidity of control, without losing the sense that you're piloting a ten-story hunk of steel that has always been pulled off well (to a lesser extent post PS2 imo)
