Well, "The Jazz Singer" was the emergence of sound as a standard feature of film, and that was 1927. It feels like technology itself kind of slowed down the development of film more than it slows down videogames, but who knows, maybe that's just me being a stick in the mud and not considering anything past what we have now as a 'next big step'.

Back then everyone wanted edgy and grimdark comics in the vein of Dark Knight Returns or Watchmen. So they hated anything happy or camp, which led to a sort of collective decision that all true nerds hated Adam West Batman.

It's only within the last 20 years that we came out of that fugue state, and were able to accept that kind of campy fun for what it was, and it was never actual hatred for Adam West, who was generally liked, even when his show was seen as something to be reviled. But Dobson doesn't know or care and wants attention, so here we are.

Alright I been reading a little more, so in the span of film 32 years past 1902, there were so timeless classics that still exist in the general knowledge (Battleship Potemkin, King Kong, Nosferatu, Dracula, etc etc), but shit didn't really start picking up until essentially 'this' point, 1934 - almost every year from then on has at least one timeless class that's either still shown or held up as the great examples of what film can be.
