When did you wake up to the realization that 8GB RAM is not enough

Around the time I realized that most games that will use a ton of ram are made by people who dont make good games anyway.

Not DDR3 either, prices increased 120% in 3 years because NAND makers are fixing prices since they noticed they only will lose money fighting for the cheapest prices so they sell more.

This is why SSDs increased in price too.

Just wait till ddr5. Some of the specialist ddr4 speeds are nuts, they've already pushed it all the way to it's limits. But we're due for a hardware upgrade. I'm not building a specially cooled aparatus to boost my speeds higher.

Back then people barely used 16-32 GB RAM and 8GB was the maximum you saw in normal builds so devs optimized games to use up to 4GB, now they dont give a fuck.

If 64GB was the standard they would make games with 128GB in mind.

The moment optimization was thrown out the window considering people are dumb as fuck and will buy new expensive as fuck hardware as long as the publisher confirms they have shit PCs (while having a deal with Nvidia to intentionally make games with shit optimization)

When I used firefox and it kept taking up 3GB of RAM. And when I played GTA V and it had a massive memory leak that was fixed by me getting enough RAM.

I don't really see the reason to upgrade from DDR3 though.

Real talk, games are like fucking impossible to optimize on the level of older titles. Game engines are just too fucking complex and next to no one makes their own anymore, when you make a game you license an established game engine so you don't have to spend resources making your own but that comes at the cost of obfuscating the minutia of how the engine works and since engines are so fucking complex actually getting in there and optimizing them is incredibly difficult and time consuming.

The best optimized games are always the ones where the guy who built the engine is also the lead programmer for the game, but that is almost never the case anymore.
