Everyone complains about the absurd respawn ratio, but I really liked it.
It gave the game such a sense of urgency and the dread that you couldn't waste your time as much as you wanted.
>>
>the basic zombies guys saying "run" or "kill me"
>those monkey noises freaking you out until you get better gear to beat them
>the first time you meet cyborg midwife
>the first couple times you get those weird psychic things from The Many
>the SHODAN reveal

Also, a personal one for me on first playthrough:
>maintenance area
>low of resources
>that damn maintenance robot thing following me
>close to death
>go up those little elevators that take you up to cargo boxes
>not sure what to do
>press button for elevator to go down
>robot just happens to be under the little elevator platform while it's going down
>platform kills the robot
I seriously did not expect that happening, and it's the moment that made me realize this is gonna be one of my all time favorites.

Sounds like it would've been amazing for a scene where you're being chased by way too many enemies to fight through a labyrinth of hallways. Not particularly spooky, but adds a sense of urgency with a rhythmic beat. I like the breakdown, too, where it turns into ambient noises before the percussion comes back.

It sounds a bit like the soundtrack to Blade, now that I think about it.

Fucking get out. SS1 was absolutely a revolutionary game, but its gameplay design does not hold up to modern scrutiny whatsoever, mouselook mod or otherwise.

>Laser rapier every fucker on roller skates, difficulty gone
>resource management is a joke, as you end the game with literally hundreds of clips, dozens of medipatches, and a sack full of batteries
>pointless weapons and grenade types convolute rather than enhancing gameplay with meaningful tactical choices
>dated AI that, aside from a few examples, only responds to the player by shooting

I love System Shock, but to argue it can surpass its sequel, which perfected the implementation of RPG mechanics in a survival horror shooter, is insane. A few balance issues doesn't change that fact, either.
>>
>>379760139

it's not a survival horror it's a space dungeon crawler

the RPG aspects in SS2 were clunky at best non-functioning and pointless at worst. Many of the routes were broken and unusable, and the game offered little to no occasions for play styles with them.

also no cyberpspace and wacky superpowered implants.

In that bottom part of the Engineering Deck. You're just walking down that massive corridor and al of a sudden you hear a horrible, static scream.

The most atmospheric deck by far is Hydroponics, though. The dark lighting, coupled with the foreboding whispers of The Many, trying to persuade you with their perverse ideas of paradise through becoming one, really did it for me. Plus the midwives were really terrifying. Anybody remember that audiolog?

I somehow doubt it. I know they've got Warren Spector working on it, but something tells me it'll suck. It's what they said about the UI.

Warren Spector (I think it was him, at least) said he thought the UI in SS2 was bad, when really it was just in-depth. Sure it wasn't the most simple thing in the world, but anybody with a pair of braincells to rub together could figure it out in the space of a couple of minutes. I think he said something about simplifying it. For me, that sounds sort of worrying.

I once had the idea of SS3 being Shodan in Rebecca, or with some sort of human form being captured and held in another station.
Yet, the Many start reapearing and you'd have to find how Shodan, despite being weaker, still manages to control things. Helpful NPC could be Nah and Hacker, serving as a sort of guards for Shodan.

It's the dominatrix overtones to your relationship in game and the fact that you're forced to ally with her. In a fucked up world, your only friend is a psychotic, murderous AI. You know she's going to stab you in the back. The question is when.

It's pretty rare for a game to give the player a villain easily ten times more evil than Hitler, and then force them into a companion role with them. It gave the game a constant air or distrust.

>>
>>379770876
>It gave the game a constant air or distrust.
This is a really good point, and I think it's something that a lot of people miss when they talk about SHODAN or the second half of the game. She wasn't just a villain, she was your partner. At least, for some parts of the game. She even begins grooming you, sending you cyber-modules, complimenting you when you complete tasks for her.
She even gives you an escape route.

She has to have some greater plan once she escapes, but she never tells you.

I love her disdain for her creations. Cooperating with a rogue AI who thinks itself a god while you work together to destroy the eld alien hivemind that she herself created, but now wishes to destroy, is such a great idea for a story.

And then you find the last person who allied with her...
>>
>>379772024
SS2 was honestly ingenious with how they designed the game. I don't even know if the devs actually realize these sort of things or if it was just fortunate and accidental but there's some fantastic subtleties to a megalomaniac AI.

It does some things better, like moving around the station and psi/alien powers, while simplifying some of the SS2 formula (weapon skills, research for example is just scanning live lifeforms). It rips off SS2 pretty damn well, and adds a few things of its own, zero gravity and crew bracelets which tell you where everyone is. Level design is really good.
It lacks in the atmosphere department though, I wasn't thrilled by the story, it always felt sterile somehow.

It was a great moment that broke the rules of the game in the best way possible. You're never supposed to be able to LOSE those experience points, but she just takes them away like they were nothing. It concretes the idea in your head that although she isn't nearly as powerful a she was in ss1 and is shamed into asking a lowly human for help, she still holds the reins in your weird relationship.

SS1 is a dungeon crawler/metroidvania type game. You're supposed to explore, find the upgrades, and use said upgrades to reach new areas you couldn't before (unless you do crazy sequence breaking shenanigans). The audio-logs and the design of each level makes it pretty clear what you're supposed to do and where to go. And the sooner you realize the ui is just click and drag the better.

This. the story was lacking.

Alex mentions something early in the game about the Typhon not being evil -- they just didn't understand the concept of morality. If they'd included some kind of telekinetic link like the one between the marine and The Many, it could've really spiced up the story and gave the enemy some character.

It is faithful but with improved graphics it looks kinda silly. SS2's many are still threatening with their constantly pained look on their face. I think for SS1 they should give a bit more wear and tear to get the creepiness effect going. Otherwise it's almost laughable.

When you come back and finish it a second time after finishing it the first time shortly after it was realised and discover its always was a hot pile of shit and rose tinted hipster babies probably havent even played it

Nah
It's been fun, /v/. Been a while since I had a nice System Shock thread

It's not as scary but it improves on the mechanics. The game got a bum rap for tangential stuff if you ask me.

>go check all the rooms
>the one with the guy contains a man

That is how to portray homos accurately. Not putting that shit on your face.

see that's terrifying. The expression, the detail, all of it. Those two juxtaposes the difference between old and new horror: there's no love or detail put into anything anymore

You are back in citadel.

The scariest parts are the ghost of the sick guy in the radiation tunnels, Malick vs Bronson vs fucking everyone, nurse Bloom's procedure, Hydro D and the garden on the recreation deck. It's not just about scary pars but the creepy storyline as you learn how The Many took over the ship and how it affected the day to day lives of the crew themselves.
>>
>>379786959
Maybe SHODAN actually succeeded in recreating it at the end of SS2 using the Von Braun's FTL engine.

They fucked up the lore, they're saying now that the mutants existed before the Shodan shit went down, as slaves for physical labor

Personally for me its when you first reach the... location with the busted radiation pipes and patrolling midwives. I was low on ammo and heals, and I distinctly remember having to unlock a lot of doors while watching over my shoulder.
>>
>>379776038
why do you have so many laser pistols anon
>>
Who the fuck decided it was a good idea to stick SHODAN on the box and in the game's intro and totally spoil her twist appearance?
>>

It has been rebuilt or somthing. Im sure Spector will give an adequate explanation.
