Even if I know what it relates to, it's usually some trivial percentage increase to trivial chances I don't give a shit about.

At best, it increases chances to critical, but I never rely on criticals in the first place.

It's boring.

So the character succeeds just because of totally random shit happening that lets him win? If you intentionally wrote a story like that, it is just bad writing. Plain bad writing.

>>
>>379694125
Its always fucking different depending on the game and its intentionally made vague as fuck.

>Final Fantasy
Completely fucking varies but FFVII, FFVIII and FFX in particular it increases evasion, hit and, critical chance and is the best stat despite there being no way to actually influence until very late into the games. Then you have FFI where it affects chance to flee battles (completely broken in the original NES release and does not work as intended.)

>Fire Emblem
Generally increase hit, evasion, crit avoidance and chance of backfire from devil weapons. Then you have shit like Gaiden where it is the sole stat governing magic avoid but Gaiden is weird as fuck anyway.
>>
>>379694313

In Nocturne it only slightly improves your magic accuracy, ambush rate, and as long as you aren't playing on Hard Mode your escape chance.
Doesn't do anything for negotiations, crits, status ailments, drops, etc, at all according to the guy that did the Nocturne Hardtype hack, and seeing how he changed and adjusted all those things I'd assume he knows best
>>
>>379694908
There is never a reason to raise defense over health
>Defense is usually divided between physical and magical while health is not
>Armor can be equipped raising defense,
nothing standardly gives more health
>High defense but low health is harder to gauge your critical zone
>Larger health pools allow for more viability for spike damage tanking and stat gain at below percent health and other similar shit
I can't actually think of any reason to build defense over health.

Actually multiple attacks are worse for defense build if scratch damage must always be dealt
>>
>>379695424
>>379695518

What I usually do is invest a point in one for every point I invest in the other, treating them like a single stat I have to level up in halves.

Unless the game has a bunch of different defensive stats then I'm not really sure what to do, would depend on the game.
>>
>luck increases all your stats.
>>
>>379695746
There are ways to take advantage of low defense like mirror damage, cant say the same for health.
>>
>>379695424
It depends on the game and how damage is calculated. Defense can be viable if damage can be totally (or effectively, with scratch damage weight against huge JRPG numbers) nullified. Health is generally better if there are multiple types of damage in common use, or if you're taking large amounts of damage even at high Defense values.
>>
>>379694394
Literally just bad game design. I wouldn't mind if it was a skill based game but in old crpgs using a bad build basically makes the game unplayable.

"Oh fuck +5 Strength now im going to hit like a truck!" is sometimes more enjoyable than "eh +5 strength but since im using a one handed weapon it only gives me half the amount of damage increase +5 dexterity would give me, better grind for items a bit more to get the optimal stat increase"

I remember it would cause crazy shit to occasionally happen if it was too low. For example, sometimes planes would just randomly crash into you while playing and often kill you. Final Fantasy 1 and 6.

Intelligence does nothing in FF1, and the critical hit system is glitched and ignores the crit rate on your weapon; instead it uses the index number indicating when the weapon was put into the game.

Physical evasion does not work in FF6, and everything instead checks magical evasion.

I put very few or no points in luck unless it's clearly a great and genuinely stat in the game. Every time.
Because fuck RNG. RNG is cancer.

Valdis Story: Abyssal City
One of the backer reward was design a character for the game. Of course, that autist couldn't resist the opportunity.

It's a good game.

Valdis Story, a surprisingly decent metroidvania.

And yeah that's Reize from Shovel Knight. His creator is some rich autist that pays to have his steel donut added in various kickstarter games.

>>379701786
Poise actually does help resist stagger and knockdown, but is only active for a handful of frames on a handful of weapons
If you use CE and change a single value from a 0 to a 1, you can have poise on all the time and it vastly improves the game

Only a couple of games, nearly every game adequately explains its stats ingame or in the manual and the tutorial area or starter area are usually enough to judge your build.

Whenever 3-4 consecutive critical hits land, they activate a 5-second lucky streak during which all of your attacks crit. Fists are the fastest weapons, so you're able to activate streaks very quickly and pummel enemies equally fast.

>stat gains are randomized upon leveling
I can never decide if I like this or not. I mean, I'll always prefer a game that allows you to decide your own stat gains, but if you gain them automatically by leveling, is the potential elation on getting a good level worth the potential for a totally gimped character if you get a string of bad ones?

I feel like random level gains are only good if the game has some kind of safety net to stop you from getting a bogus levelup, like only getting +1 HP or something.

I am playing a game. I can get lucky and score a crit or a special item. I can be unlucky too. I as the player have my own luck which affects the outcomes in the game.

Does my own strength affect how strong my avatar's attacks are? Does my endurance and ability to run a few miles without stopping mean that my character necessarily has high endurance? No. But my luck does directly affect the game, and this is why every game that has a luck stat is stupid.
