This sounds right. The one fucking friend I have that likes the Metroid franchise got his start on Prime 2. He's only legitimately played through the prime series and brings up the trilogy every time the topic is Metroid.

He hated zero mission and I question how far he actually got into it. At most when he's played my copy of Super Metroid long enough to get through the intro stage and gives up like a retarded child getting lost in a grocery store that's been separated from it's keeper. I've offered to let him borrow various Metroid games before and he refuses every time.

Nintendo games make waves because there's less of them. For other systems, the popularity gets divided up across such an enormous number of games that people aren't generally all following 1 game and making a huge fuss about it. Where as Nintendo owners have no choice. They're forced to all be on the same bandwagon.
