He's not even the greatest struggler in his own game.
Emil struggled for 7k years.
2B was on a verge of psychotic break for 3 years and tried to commit suicide.
9S had a few worst weeks in his life too.
Pascal happily chilled in his village for years and then chickened out when he encountered first true suffering.
>>

>>
>>379615013
I think you just have to do the intro sidequests (getting the camp setup before Anemone gives you the plot quest)

but no you don't have to do the others.

I think the way it works is that the two of em each have "unique" sidequests and a bunch of shared once and once you totally finish a quest you're good

I played Nier so I'm kinda expecting a "YOU WERE THE VILLAIN THE WHOLE TIME! ROBOTS WERE IN THE RIGHT!" ending, but with how flaccid 2B's story ended I think it's gearing up for more than that. I wonder if those aliens factor in.

First Nier (well, side materials) say that some pockets of replicants were successfully reunited with their gestalts before the Shadowlord died.

Then they were left to their own devices in a planet full of relapsing shades.

While the chances of any of them surviving was slim, the "oh the fraction of humanity left went to the moon" lie was believable.

If anything it would have been less predictable if there were humans still alive on the moon.

Some bullshit about how it's better to die fighting than just give up, I guess. Most humans do this, so it wouldn't have been that unbelievable.

Did I get that right?

The first thing they did when they touched down was start decimating everything apparently. Probably glassing a planet, settling down, and moving onto the next one.

Adam described them as more plant-like than genuinely emotional or sapient. So I don't think it's a huge loss that the machines took them out.
>>
>>379631213
Squid penis aliens tried to invade earth, Emil and his clones beat them back singlehandedly.

Penis aliens copied Emil's design to make super efficient fighting robots (the machine lifeforms we see in Automata.) The Emil clones are defeated and scatter. Somehow the remaining replicants from Nier 1 band together to form a resistance against the now dominant machine lifeforms. Jump forward thousands of years later to Nier Automata and the replicants are still resisting the alien robots, and create Project YorHa to bolster morale and hide the now lost truth that humanity is extinct.

The machines and Android resistance leadership apparently enter into an agreement... Machines and android will keep fighting perpetually with neither side able to win decisively. The machines will evolve and reach their goal of becoming more human, who they see as Gods worth emulating (unlike their plant like penis alien creators who they despised.)

The androids in turn are spared utter annihilation by the more adaptable machine lifeforms, and are allowed to continue to exist and fight. On course this involves a great deal on secrecy, thus the need for such things as Executioner units to help keep the truth from getting out to the general android populace.

Someone correct me if my interpretation of the story is wrong.

I think this might have been mistranslated. In the post-game shit for Nier, Emil GET OFF MY LAWNS the ayys because he treasures the world that his friends lived on, rather than them actively wanting to save it.
>>
>>379631791
He was with Kaine and supposedly Yonah and revived Nier for a while longer after the incident, defending the village from feral shades.

Nier's ultimate goal was to protect the people closest to him in the end, but with everyone else gone I think home is the only thing Emil has left to remember any of them.

The replicants and any vestige of humanity besides the data on the moon was long gone by the time the aliens arrived.

The machines created YoRHa so they could follow their basic programming and have an enemy they could consistently destroy, once they had already killed their creators for lack of an enemy. Humanity was used a god for the androids to emulate and fight for. This probably draws parallels from wars being fought over ideology, resources or land. The alien wars happen due to all three.

Eventually the human information is added to the machine network, and the network itself starts fucking up and creating machines that have no interest in following their original directive (like Pascal and his peaceful machines, or pseudoandroids like Adam). The internal conflict in the network is what causes all the shit with the red girl and the network's destruction.

>>
>>379632132
You're misintrepreting a lot of it. Replicants were wiped out ages ago, as they can't survive without the corresponding Gestalt. Without the Shadowlord, Gestalts are unable to stabalize and die out, leaving the Replicants to die from the Black Scrawl. Machines and Androids never go into a direct agreement, it's indirect. The reason why the conflict exists is because both sides need purpose. Machines are programmed with the sole task of defeating the enemy, so if they do defeat the androids, they'll be left with no purpose. On the android side, if they do manage to defeat the machines, than the remaining androids will quickly realize that humans are not coming back, which is again their sole purpose, to serve humans. The reason why Machine evolves is not because they want to become human, but because the Network realizes the futility of the struggle, and wants to find new purpose. Also, executioner units only protect the secret of humanity being extinct, nobody, not even the Commander, knows about the true purpose behind Project YoRHa.

Right, but true androids (not Replicants which required human souls) like Devola and Popola existed and it was these androids that survived and apparently created more androids while all the Gestalts and Replicants died off. It's the descendants of these androids who resisted the machine lifeforms and eventually created Project YoRHa using machine cores.

Adam and Eve are merely decoy antagonists set up by N2, both of them are just two brothers thrown into a meaningless world. The only reason they turn to violence is because 2B and 9S show them example as Eve gets born when his brother is hurt and his brother's first memory is two asshole androids attacking him when he just wanted to talk.

And even then Adam seems to get a major character development between A/B and D as he has no more malice and peacefully asks 9S to come with them while holding his sleeping brother. For all intends and purposes they are a deconstruction of typical white-haired JRPG villains like Albedo or Ramirez and portrayed simply as another victims of machine network that thankfully manages to understand that it was hurting people at the very end of a game.

Read the canon prequel novella "Memory Cage": https://mintychu.dreamwidth.org/340.html

9S has been killed by 2E many many times before, before the game starts. Even though he loses his memories each time he is executed by her, it's strongly implied that he retains some "feeling" or some vestigial knowledge of her true role.

Makes their relationship all the more tragic, really.

>I felt I only enjoyed parts of Nier Automata in retrospect
That's because Automata's plot is multi-layered by design, it was a conscious decision which makes the game's storytelling fairly unique. Each new route uncovers another layer of the story and it's not a coincidence that you begin playing as a dummy 2B but the real protagonist is 9S who sees way more and is more important in grand order of things.

First route is a fairly uninteresting struggle between brave comrades and evil JRPG villains trying unleash a calamity on the world.
Second route shows that so-called JRPG villains are merely two dumb kids, machines want nothing other than to find a meaning in this world, utter meaninglessness of everything you do as humanity is dead and strongly implies that 9S is a madman hiding all his desires behind innocent smile.
Third route flips virtually entire narrative multiple times starting by showing that 2B harboured such deep love for 9S she's ready to sacrifice herself for him and die saying his name and up to portraying even the evil machine network personality as a clueless retard who manages to evolve only by looking at 9S' struggle. Then it flips relationships between 2B and 9S once more by revealing her true identity which makes their crazy infatuation even more tragic.
And then comes E ending as a beautiful conclusion of this whole existential drama with even Pods rejecting their programming just to save the ones they love. At this point the narrative was flipped so many times that making a full new playthrough of route A will give a shitload of new insight about its events as you will be more likely to notice small details.

Overall i consider Automata to be a really solid example of a great postmodern narrative which is far greater than a simple sum of its parts.

It becomes even better after reading side materials. Two lone androids who were lucky enough to fall for each other despite all odds and desperately resist virtually entire world just to have a chance to be together. Even their personalities were defined by spending time with each other as 2B goes from a mindless combat android to a frail girl who understood the value of life thanks to 9S and wants to live a life together with him and 9S went from a latent psychopath and mass murderer to a cute and cheery guy.

Still can't think about any other vidya love story topping this.

The pods might know.
The human preservation committee which is the core of the 'Army of Humanity' which is the umbrella organization of all androids and all bunkers might know.

Yorha is simply an offshoot of this army, a branch, that got machine core/black box tech from Zillian and your bunker is under this branch.

>>379644535
>'Army of Humanity' which is the umbrella organization of all androids and all bunkers
As far as we know, Bunkers are independent of Resistance forces and even Kingdom of Night seems to be its own faction, they have no higher command save for the council of humanity that only sets out dummy signals and spews generic propaganda messages.

Even YoRHa is not dependent on any other military structure, they merely ask for collaboration and support if needed.
>>
>>379612707
Is there any other people that actually have taste and don't like shit like Nier Automata?
>>
>>379645190
Specifically the strategy guide said the Lunar base and all bunkers were created by 'The army of Humanity'.

Yorha is just a branch of this army, and the fake signals on the moon was a strategy by this army as well.

The Army of Humanity, and the 'Human preservation Committee' are the true leaders of the androids which we haven't seen at all.

But it would look like from the name, their gonna try and restart humanity from genomes after the machines got fucked.
>>
>>379645461
>Q45. Are there any androids above YoRHa in the chain of command who’re responsible for calling the shots in the war against the machine lifeforms?
>There aren’t any. YoRHA, resistance members, other androids from the orbital bases, as well as the androids fighting in the kingdom of night* are all equal below the council of humanity.
*This is the region of the earth that’s permanently night, which includes North and South America.

>>379645527
>The androids organize the 'Army of Humanity' as a means to fight the machines, originally a network of all androids to communicate with the Human Preservation Committee at its core.

The council of humanity doesn't exist, so to say androids are all under the council of humanity is deflection by Taro.
>>

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1F7KM18848_HHlQFviGCkJbXV1M-5SKm_HnVBTzzYlDg/mobilebasic

Army of Humanity probably was a thing at some point, but both the game and Taro himself hints mostly at collaboration going between different self-sustaining factions. That's why nobody was able to stop or correct the fucked up project YoRHa as Number 9 set it to be automatically carried out and there was no outside control over anything.

80% of the planet is taken by machine lifeforms and i won't be surprised if Human Preservation Comittee got devoured by machine network at final stages of its evolution.
>>
>>379645858
Probably when Yoko Taro/Platinum Games decided it would not worth the effort to program proper day and night cycles into their video game.
>>
>>379646189
There's no deflection as he says that council of humanity is a fake in the very same Q/A session and Commander mentions that they set up dummy signals there in advance so no outside force is controlling it, it's carried automatically by Pod 006.

>Hang on, does this other content make the romantic aspect mutual and blatant?
It was always mutual.
Read Cruel Blood Oath and look at little details like 2B getting jealous during Amnesia quest, or read japanese Weight of the World lyrics which outright tells that she wants to live a life together with him.

Though side materials make this aspect more blatant, yes. She states that she can't forget his smile or the way he treated her, she outright states that she has a mysterious feeling towards him without knowing the name of that feeling and that she had no will to life prior to encountering him.
And in concert ending she literally dies from grief on a spot if he can't be awaken.

It's literally the thing the machine lifeforms by nature are trying to achieve.

>Implying the human data on the moon isn't the player characters.

Pod 42 includes you the player as he talks about the journey the six of you took before the final battle. And the final action of sacrificing your save file makes a lot more sense like this.

We see them requesting a satellite laser strike during Grun battle. It's not an order from above, they are requesting backup from another organisation.

It says nothing about Army of Humanity but mentions Android Army which seems to be a different entity already.

Fake, of course. But it shows the strength of her feelings for him in case of bad end.

To be fair, they didn't know each other for very long. They both lost their own respective team.

But I do think Anemone should have had a stronger role to play after her backstory reveal. She's just kind of another random quest giver compared to Popola and Devola. Heck, Jackass had more time to shine than she did.

I dont know but ive about had it with this janky ass shitty combat.

Totally level-based, all the worst ideas from rpgs, enemy levels get high enough and they just turn into un-stunnable, un-launchable health tanks. Counter attacking after perfect dodge leaves you vulnerable because you can still get fucking hit, and what the fuck is up with the slowdown that happens when you hit an enemy? Its like when my sword makes contact with an enemy we both stop moving for a split second. What the fuck is up with that? And what the fuck is up with the goddamn hitboxes? An enemy swings his sword at my teammate, i get dead angled like a bitch when there's no fucking momentum left in the attack and i get one shotted. Then you level up and stack chips and the game becomes a joke, enemies never last long enough for a launcher or finishers to ever be required, which is funny because when youre underleveled launchers and heavy stunlock type attacks wont stagger or launch for shit.

Fuck the balance in this game, makes it no fun to play.

The 'Army of Humanity' is the overall and command of all androids, whether these are decentralized groups co-operating or it follows a hierarchy is unknown.

The bunkers, combat android manufacturing facilities, the moon base etc are all under this org.

Given the fake council of humanity was done to bolster all android morale, it seems all bunkers spew this propaganda but were not sure all bunkers have the backdoor since it seems to be implied to specifically be done to our bunker which is the Yorha bunker.

Taro literally stated that there's no one above YoRHa and other decentralised organisations in real chain of command. Ignore Taro as much as you want, just don't claim that your mental gymnastic has anything to do with the canon.
>were not sure all bunkers have the backdoor
Oh jesus fuck, and go read stageplay script number 2 for fuck's sake.

>>379648309
Wrong. "We 6" refers to Pod 042A/B/C and 153/A/B/C...the six pods you have control over throughout the game.

The 3 variants of 153 are freaking seen flying around in the ending.

If they drastically reduced and minimized healing, both healing items and the chips they could have balanced the game a fuckton easier.

The only way they could make difficulty given the healing options was to make 1-hit kills which are retarded.

I thought the -actual- androids created YoRHa to boost morale for them, to keep the lie of Humanity being alive going? Hence why they didn't use actual AI for YoRHa cause it'd be "inhumane".

There's two 'Yorha' activities.

Originally 'Yorha' was just a designation for a new type of combat android with machine cores, the scientist who made them was working to solve a separate problem which was android morale collapsing cus humans died.

He came up with a plan to fake humans alive by signals from the moon and the new 13th bunker would 'manage' this communication somehow.

one of his prototype yorha androids called Number 9 found all this out and 'perfected' the plan by also making sure the 13th bunker sabotages by the backdoor to protect leaks so all thats left is the moon sending signals.

Number 9 called this 'project yorha'.

So you could say Yorha was originally just about making better combat androids but then the faggot Number 9 hijacked the term and said 'project Yorha' was about faking humans.
