"back" into the market, you mean. had intel not screwed them over with deals to major manufacturers, amd may have stayed in their glorious athlon 64 days

kabylake-x is a fucking joke, as is the x299 platform. the entire thing was a kneejerk reaction to the new ryzen threadripper chips. actual kabylakes aren't bad at all, but generally you can get a ryzen for cheaper that performs about the same

issue is with ryzen is that if you want to get the best performance, you'll need the fastest ddr4 ram that it supports that you can get your hands on. this isn't an issue with kabylake

ryzen also performs a little better under workstation environments (data compression, video encoding, etc) than it does in gaming

if you have anything newer than an i7 3770k, though, there's no point in an upgrade towards either company

if not, i'd suggest the r7 1700 or r7 1700x

For several reasons, for starters I don't see any reason to upgrade from haswell 4790 anytime soon and would rather spend that money towards Vega if it is any good.
Second reason is that I run win10 in a VM and pass a GPU to it because I prefer to use linux as my host OS without dual booting.
There have been some issues with performing GPU passthrough on ryzen motherboards leading to low GPU performance and stuttering, an issue which should gradually be resolved as new bios updates are introduced. For now my current intel setup works flawlessly for GPU passthrough.
Rather wait until 8 cores becomes necessary, pinning 4+ cores to a VM to reduce context switching does sound alluring though, maybe when Zen+ comes along with better IPC and AM4 has sorted vfio related issues.
>>

>>
>>379615080
If you're upgrading to at minimum Ryzen 1700, then yes. Maybe Ryzen 1600/1600X if you're really stretching it. Otherwise not really.

I doubt there is a large selection of games you're unable to play because your CPU is a little on the weedy side as far as modern hardware goes.

This is 8320e. Resolution is 720p. Considering 1440p and 4K are all the rage now, CPU speed is basically irrelevant. And this is still DX11. Game developers won't be adding more shit to the levels as console CPUs are already maxed out. There is literally no reason for games to become more CPU intensive for 2-3 years until the new generation of consoles will arrive. There are stupid exceptions like Fallout 4, but it's not like it runs well anywhere anyway.
>>

It's about presentation vs game mechanics. BF1 is balanced around pic related contraption, it does not require and does not benefit that much from split second reaction times. And there is network latency when the server acknowledges your button presses with a 30 ms lag. 144hz may look prettier, but ultimately cannot affect your game performance in measurable way.

The simplest answer? Binning. Since intel builds monolithic dies every core has to hit a given mhz for the chip to be sold at thos clocks and understanably its far easier to build a 10 core chip ensuring 2ghz clocks on a process aimed at 4ghz+ than a 10 core chip clocked at 4.2ghz. In addition to that heat is a serious issue on such small packages (an issue ryzen avoids due to its MCM nature).

There is a reason why the absolute cream of the Intel crop - those 24 core xeons - run in the 2ghz range.

Like I said it's all good, just do some googling for an AM4 cooler because I don't know any that are definitely AM4 compatible yet. I bought a 360mm AIO water cooler from Amazon that said it had an AM4 bracket, it arrived and had no bracket. And because I'm in Europe there's no way to buy it here so I have to return it.
>>
>>379636053
If you got a controller and keyboard and mouse that's all you need.
>>379636417
Why would he need a cooler? if he is new I don't think he will touch overclocking on a non x ryzen. The default cooler is ok.
>>
Ryzen basically smokes the i5 right out of its best value spot and doesn't beat most of the i7+ offerings.

...that's fine. That's like a colossal improvement over faildozer. We went from no use-cases for an AMD CPU to there actually being use cases. That's not bad.
>>
>>379636545
Stock coolers suck ass. The Wraith Spire is decent at cooling but because it's so small it's fucking loud as shit. I'm forced to use it right now and it's about 3 times as loud as the other fans on my PC. I would never recommend a stock cooler unless you're on a tight budget, and even then a 212 Evo is only $30 and is much quieter and better at cooling.

I don't think I did, got mine stable at 1.25v at 3.6
3.7 would cause it to crash after 1-2 hours of usage
>>
>>379637412

>Well I didn't knew that stock Amd coolers sucked

All of the wraith coolers are the best stock coolers around. The wraith max (which seemingly only came on the old fx chips) is roughly on par with a hyper evo 212.
>>
>>379637458

Assuming that voltage is being read correctly 3.6 at 1.25v is golden sample territory. Go run IBT or prime95 and see if it holds stable for 8hrs before you declare it stable at those voltages.

>>
>>379637412
The AMD stocker coolers are actually much better than the Intel stock cooler. The main difference between them is that the AMD cooler is actually decent at cooling, the Intel cooler is a piece of shit. Both are loud as shit because of the tiny fans, but you don't realize how loud and whiny they are until you get an aftermarket cooler with decent sized fans. Small fans are always louder because they have to spin much faster to achieve the same cooling as bigger fans.
>>
>>379637964
What's your budget? do you prefer intel or amd?
>>
>>379638195
Well I don't know how to measure sound but usually they don't annoy me because the sound of games makes them inaudible when the fans go max speed on the processor and gpu.

99%+ of software will only use 1 core and maybe 2 threads, there is literally no point having 8 cores and 16 threads when you only use 1/8 of that

I'd rather have 1x 10GHz core then 10x 1GHz core, it would perform much better and probably be cooler, quieter and use less power too

You see what's funny about this test is that it includes a 2600K, A almost 7 year old CPU, and pair it with the latest GPU, This is why you benchmark at a lower res, cause GPU upgrades are done more often, and CPU limits are then reached.

I even kind of regret moving up from my Phenom II X4 965 Black to a 4th gen i7, that ancient fucking processor was still chugging along just fine.

Ok kid enjoy shitposting from your stupid mobile phone with your 3 inch lcd screen.
I'll post comfortably from my pc with a 22 inch screen which I can easily plug to a tv too if I want to have "couch gaming" or people over and I can connect any controller I feel like at anytime and play classics at anytime without having to rebuy them again and I can alt+tab to other stuff too and listen to music from a real music player.
But of course you have bloode borne at 30 fps with 15 fps drops, or your shitty nintendo tablet with wahoos and motion gimmicks, good for you kid.

Shitty SSD, get a 850 EVO.
ASUS has no warranty at all, be careful.
Corsair PSUs suck, go for EVGA or any superflower rebrand.
Case is too expensive.

Also you dont need a 1KW PSU unless you plan SLI which is a bad idea.

Both AMD and Intel retards in this thread. If you were to believe /v/ or /g/, the'd have you upgrade your processor on a quarterly basis.

Too expensive for a 5-10% or counterproductive upgrade.
Buy a GTX 1080/1080Ti instead.

Ok that's fair but my real concern in these benchmarks is emulation.
Since it is a gray area, they never touch it in these things and that'0s something I seriously hate.
When are they gonna do it? emulation is a big part of why you would upgrade your hardware on pc.

You realize haswell PSU aren't compatible.
>my pc caught fire it's not my fault
Wow.
>>
>>379648757
It really isn't. At least not for me. If I was forced to shoe-horn myself into buying some high clock CPU with extremely poor power efficiency for something I could achieve with a ~200 dollar console, it strikes me as retarded.

PC for emulation is a very inefficient way of spending money, and requires sacrifices in areas I actually care about.
>>
>>379648946
You don't have to replace the PSU unless it is more than 3 years old or 100k hours.
>>
>>379649470
I am not poorfag but everytime I buy a used console or controller it brekas down super quick, so I gave up trying.
If you have been lucky then cool story bro (literally). Your magical perfect world where used goods are reliable is not the same as mine.
>>
>>379649647
I don't see why I need to buy used. Consoles usually cost between 200-300 bucks. Console games don't have replay value, so lets say my console does end up breaking it's no skin off my back. Because I was never gonna use it again anymore anyway.

The only exception I found was my PS3, which I was able to use recently to play Persona 5. I dug it out of my garbage heap for it.
>>
>>379612925
what do you mean, what happened? is AMD not our guy?
>>
>>379650107
Emulating is for older discontinued shit, I am not going to emulate the ps3 or ps4.
I want to emulate gamecube wii and ps2.
>>
>>379650290
For videogames? no.
Unless you are talking about a laptop with an AMD APU while you dont care about temperature and CPU performance at all and only GPU performance.
>>
>>379650447
Yea, sorry, I don't get it. I see no reason to play games I played in 90s or early 2000s. Unless you'r talking about SNES, I'll make a singular exception for that because I still love 2D RPG games and they haven't gotten much better with time.
>>
>>379609717
What cpu do I buy for a high end PC? Will using a Nvidia cpu affect the performance?
>>
>>379651228
A i7.
No.
>>
>>379650904
Well I was poor during those years so I am trying to play those games I missed out currently. No wonder you don't care about emulation if you already played those gems of the past.
>>
>>379651420
>>379651228
If you only will play games then a I5 since barely any games use hypertreading.
>>
It's Black Friday 2017. What should I buy for a high end PC? Ryzen, coffee lake, nvidia, vega?
>>
>>379651674
Whatever you can afford or has a good discount, doesn't matter if its AMD or Intel (unless you are planning to emulate, if you are go intel).
Check microcenter for free motherboard combos.

Get a GTX 1070 because i doubt vega will be out by then.
>>
>>379651502
I didn't play all of them, they just aren't good anymore because they are dated and early 3D graphics are disgusting. I can't go back to a state where I can immerse myself in visuals that look like one of those steam greenlight shovelware games.

It's like early 2D graphics, they aged poorly.
>>
>>379651674

Well I honestly don't see many games worth playing these days on the big announcements, I have been playing mostly mmo and indies myself.
But I guess stuff can look outdated if you don't like those specific genres and appeal that old games had compared to the new stuff.

I mostly play autism simulators like Aurora 4x or Rule the waves, but if I'm gonna play the type of schlock you find on consoles - which I certainly do, like say for example RPGs and action games, you're only going to find better modern examples.

Shooters and western RPGS are perhaps the only standout genres that are borderline shit these days compared to past, but older examples of those can be played native on the PC.
So it's like what's there to play on an emulator? Platformers, say for example Crash Bandicoot? I'll pass. Not worth buying a bad CPU for.
