I kind of get your point, but if the world small/tiny you might as well just play in a lobby then. And that's completely contrary to what an MMORPG is supposed to be. Walking through ARR areas feels like I've drank the Big McLargeHuge potion in Alice in Wonderland; the Overworld looks like a joke. I used to play WoW for years and wasted most of my time on creating transmogs. The selection is shit, all the belts look like shit and you being able to hide them was the most awesome addition in Legion. also most armor was just texture so you had to stick to shoulder pads/arms/legs to get any shape.
Open headgear was also a pain.
Creating a good outfit concept is in my opinion easier in FF, with the downside that how you manage outfits being faaaaaaaaaaar better in WoW now.
Just having a list of items you once owned and not having to keep the item around is top comfort.

They've stated that horizontal progression will never exist properly in XIV because the base majority of players would feel too confused/overwhelmed, coupled with the fact that once there's an "optimal" build, people will ignore the other armors and weapons entirely.

What I meant is more that there isn't even vertical progression in Heavensward. In 2.x, you could reasonably use gear from Twintania, for example, to progress when Second Coil launched. The crafted gear only really had materia slots going for it, it was more expensive (relative to HW), and they didn't release accessories.

In HW they released full sets of higher item level, meldable, and super cheap crafted gear on every new raid patch. Every piece of gear from Gordias and Midas only existed to help you kill the final boss of Gordias and Midas, basically. It kind of takes the fun out of doing the content after you've killed it for the first time.
