If you've been getting just the US versions of roms, make sure to also go through the EU versions too, there are a fair number of games that were translated into english, but not for the US. There definitely needs to be a shorter duration as well as a requirement that the owner step forward periodically to re-up the copyright.

There's too many issues with the current law where things from 90 years ago (or even 20 years ago in some cases) are still under copyright and no one has any clue who actually owns it.
