My best bud and his brothers have tried to lure me into Clash of Clans. I understand that their clan benefits from more players joining it.

I told them that I wouldn't because I know how mobile multiplayer works, you get your little fun in the beginning until you hit the inevitable pay wall (I had some fun with the Warhammer 40k clone for a while)

The thing it's been several months and they're still at it. Can you enjoy that game for a long period of time without paying? Or will they quit as soon as I get invested in it?

Clash of Clans is absolute fucking aids because of its exponentially longer wait times (it's a pay to not wait model, town hall level 7 where I quit is I think a 8 day wait?) but Clash Royale is far better. There is an eventual soft pay wall, I'd say around 3k trophies/crown tower level 10, BUT the good thing is that friendly matches and tournaments use a standardized field regarding card levels that's far below the soft pay wall where levels start getting hard to achieve without spending money.

cards max out at levels 13, 11, 8 and 5 (depending on type), but in tournament play all cards are raised/lowered to be level 9, 7, 4 and 1.

The rarest cards, legendaries, are hard but not impossible to come by, and nothing guarantees you'll get one even if you do shell out dosh, and despite being legendary tons of meta decks don't use them. They're more laterally powerful, being unique and special rather than just statistically strong.

That's because the game matches you strictly based on trophies, and trophies are based solely on win/loss. So if you're better than average and naturally blow past the trophy range where the majority of players equal in level to you are you start to hit a bit of an almost asymptotal soft cap, encountering people at your skill level (or really, below it, since you're at equal standing but you have less statistical strength).

There are cards which benefit greatly from having level advantage, some cards which are useless if they have too large a level disadvantage (for instance, if your counter-spells like zap and arrows are too low level they don't secure kills on staple cards every deck uses like skarmy) and then there are cards that function relatively the same regardless of level, like your graveyard card you got. It's not uncommon for you to see level 4 and below players in arenas or at trophie levels where 7+ players are, and it's also not uncommon to see the higher level players lose. the game has enough wiggle room that, outside of specific 1v1 card match ups and metagame, levels aren't too cripplingly important. Some important things are like, whether your towers kill fire spirits in 1 hit or in 2 though, or if your zap kills goblin barrel in 1 hit or not, because that's the difference between no and lots of chip damage.

Also, tournaments and friendly battles use a flat field where cards have fixed levels, so grinding is only a matter of unlocking every card, and climbing the ladder. Once you hit level 8 thing's become fairly standardized.

Usually by manipulating their aggro and deploying mega minion behind them. Sometimes I use freeze defensively provided I have to elixir to deploy both it and troops. Usually I go for cheesy 1 crown wins and then use double tombstones, double Fspirits and or double zaps to stall the fuck out of the match after I get 1 crown.

I've been playing it for a year and I dont know why I havent quit yet.

4000 trophies and all I do is log in daily to get free chests, request cards for my deck I havent changed in 6 months and do the clan chest once a week. I haven't done a normal match in like 2 months because I dont want to drop trophies.
