What the fuck went so horribly wrong? Why is everything so dumbed down and streamlined and boring? It's not even like Bioshock was that complicated.

Right there.
>>
It's more story driven. While first Bioshock was more about themed, carefully crafted levels with little narrative and lots of backstory that you're fed through audio logs and messages, Infinite is more COD-like.
>>

It was a M night shamoshlongs take on Dr. who story + COD.

Because Bioshock was not lauded for its gameplay. Hence they focused on the story, whether you think the story is shit or not.

I don't think that having a more active story was an inherently bad idea. But I really wish they had stuck with the original idea of making the world a bit more strange and terrifying, rather than a run-and-gun through endless streams of gun-toting mooks.

Not to mention that the world is still alive and populated, but you still can't really interact with people beyond shooting them or eating out of their garbage cans.

Levine had a different idea in mind for Infinite entirely (at least after displeasure with how Rapture-y the darker deaf-Liz beta was) and between console-constraints, team firing-&-rehiring and inability to stay on one idea, was forced to dumb said new idea down into a 6-month last-minute redo.

First two videos are the proof of concept, the third is basically what we'd have had they waited another gen for something like this (and make Bioshock 3 or something in the meantime).

I really loved how it looked in the second video.

The way that the city and its people are clearly going mad, but it keeps the bright and idealistic environment, with non-linear interactions determining how certain people react to you.
>>
>>379518627

I think it was a smart decision to make it so the player started in a non-destroyed columbia: those artillery turrets would have been pretty great though, wish they had kept those
>>
>What the fuck went so horribly wrong?
Nothing went wrong, what the fuck is wrong with you?
>Why is everything so dumbed down and streamlined and boring?
Because Irrational learned that all the chaff in Bioshock 1 only made it alow and boring and not very interesting. Also fuck you it's not boring it's amazung. Bioahick 1, THAT was a boring game. Don't even get me started on Bioshock 2!
>It's not even like Bioshock was that complicated.
Lel, if anything, it was overcomplicates. All those RPG elements that amounted to nothing. Only good for pulling the wool over the eyes of people lie you and nothing else.

Infinite simply ditches everything that didn't work in the original game. That's why it's the best game in the series.

>>
>>379514349
well i think they called it bioshock infinite so you'd understand that it's a spin-off kind of game, so you wouldn't expect it to be the same kind of gameplay/themes as the main series.

i suspect they wanted even more different stuff but it was too ambitious or marketting bullshit got involved so they had to tone it down and it ended up being like a theme park ride version of bioshock.
>>
>>379517404
Because that's the epitome of Bioshock Infinite design - hand holding and on rails "experience" that doesn't let you deviate in a slightest way. You don't get to choose how you're going to solve the puzzle, or remember that you saw the card earlier, or how are you going to kill the boss, or how are you going to clear that area or sneak through it or whatever. Your choices and interaction doesn't matter because you're confined into a box the developers wanted, and you're being given answers to questions before you even ask them. You don't have a moment to think about what the puzzle is about, you have the answer on your screen already.
The whole game is like one huge participation trophy of video games - "you solved the puzzle, look at you! you go big boy!" quality of gameplay.

I understand linear shooters, but i'd rather have a choice on how to get around a particular obstacle, or how to defeat an area, or how to interact with something, instead of "hey, choose a choker for me, isn't that choice?!". No, it's not, it's bullshit. Same with the black girl white guy scene.

Infinite is so on-rails, they even got fucking rails in game as a pun, except it didn't work.
>>
>>379523128

And Soldier's Field in the 2011 art style

It's clear the E3 demo was a slice of the game they were making and it all went to shit in 2012, cobbling together a messy, incoherent corridor shooter with assets from all iterations of Columbia, swapping Comstock's characterization from a jingoist who seized power in Columbia through political means, after it seceded from the US, for a religious, manifest destiny zealous demagogue who is also a parallel Booker.

idk about you fucks but I was way more interested in the original concept about how Columbia was basically created to demonstrate to the world how successful the American experiment was, only for everything to go to shit when corrupt politicians literally turned the whole fucking city into a warzone

You would have entered columbia during the middle of the conflict as opposed to having to wade through hours of bullshit to finally reach the part that bore some resemblance to the original, but even that wasn't enough.

time constraints and hardware limitations which were their own fault because they had been developing for high end pcs the whole time and only realized it wouldn't run on consoles much later. they scrapped the game as it was and recycled the assets and setpieces for a mediocre shooter.

Heh, that's one I haven't seen yet. Nice.

Levine has George Lucas Syndrome. They scrapped the whole game no less than 5 times before getting to where we're at.

Not sure what's wrong, except maybe the Ghost having WAY too much HP on higher difficulties.

I'm dumping all this old stuff in this thread and as much as I lament the loss of the 2011 version, I'd still defend some aspects of the final game as well, even the ending

it may be open but if nothing interesting exists in that space, it's only more bothersome. As far as gunplay, it has the same issue with Fallout 4 where shooting people might be nice, but that can't carry a game when what's around it isn't good.

Gunplay might be average or even below in Bioshock, but plasmids actually interested me, I wanted to find audio diaries and explore the levels, and finding passive plasmids lying around felt good. Bioshock Infinite is big and empty. The latter ruins the former.

I know I've seen it in something Levine-related, but what was it again?
>>
>>379540085
Your whole post is literally "this game is not an RPG only an FPS so it automatically sucks." Which is kinda fucking retarded since everything in Infinite is designed around the fact that it's an FPS not some sorta watered down FPS/RPG rip off.

BI to me is the only game in the Bioshock series that comes close to one of my all time favs System Shock 2 because it tries to do its own thing instead of being a watered down take on System Shock 2.

It was a tweet to Levine saying "Holy cats! You weren't lying when you said you rewrote the whole story six months ago!". This was a few days before Infinite released and the tweet was promptly deleted.
>>
>>379542346
It was always going to have more scripted triggers, but the earlier demos had actual choices, optional paths, risk engaging a mob or passing by. It was an attempt to outgrow the "sole survivor in dead city addressing you from behind glass" trope by putting you in a live conflict zone. That was an interesting evolution of the Shock template. Now I still love plenty about the final game but it's just a corridor shooter made to paste together the environments and story beats and the press fell over themselves to fellate it anyway, completely oblivious to the massive compromise they were served up.
>>
>>379514349
its actually an enjoyable game.
>>
Just recently finally play the whole game.

but i don't quite get the story.
where does Cornelius Slate story comes from?
suddenly he's fucking things up just when you happened to be there.
and he don't seems to care there's two you existing.

and why would you be racist if you're baptized?
is it because of lady comstock getting killed by a nigger?
>>
>>379544053
I don't disagree but I would trade the entire final game for a working playable 2011 build, even incomplete. The scale of the architecture was just spectacular.
>>
>>379543935
See, a more typical shooter yeah, but it's certainly not a corridor shooter since it does a good job of having decent variety in how each combat level is set up which are far more open than corridor shooter stuff. I do agree with the other stuff. It's a good game that could've been GOAT game.
>>
>>379522403
>overly complex
Never play the System Shock games, they would probably give you an aneurysm
>>
>>379544478
Slate does remember Booked DeWitt, he just doesn't recognize Comstock (which is dumb but Booker doesn't recognize bearded statues of himself either so eh)

The baptism point is so often deliberately misconstrued. The point is that Booker feels enormous guilt and self-hate over his actions at Wounded Knee (it's hinted that He/Comstock has native american blood). By fully believing that his sins can be washed away, instead of forgiving himself he goes deeper down the cognitive dissonance rabbit hole and warps Christian morality to justify his past actions by trivializing the natives and their suffering in the name of manifest destiny. That is the point of the Booker/Comstock dichotomy. Booker is a broken, wasted, guilt-ridden fuck-up living with his guilt, whereas Comstock has completely warped and suppressed any moral ambiguity to suit his confirmation bias and personal justifications.

There's tons of logical problems with the multiverse stuff (on top of the classic grandfather paradox that it basically is) but there is really nothing wrong with the core conceit of the baptism split on a thematic level. It's not as clever as Would You Kindly, but it sums up the game's intent rather well.
>>
>>379514349
I fully enjoyed BS:I despite its obvious mechanical issues and full retard ending.
>>
>>379545223
>he just doesn't recognize Comstock
but why did he nonstop yelling about comstock not giving him and the soldiers an honorary death or some shit like that?
how did he get to Columbia anyway, seems like he must had been there for quite awhile.
the character just doesn't seems to be well thought out but forced because the writer is talentless hack
same goes to the female nigger that seems to be important to the plot but actually not at all
>>
>>379537769
>best gunplay in the series
Nigga, even the first Bioshock has better gunplay and Infinite was my first Bioshock,I haven't played 2 yet

>>most open levels in the series
I doubt it

>allows you to use all vigors instead of just one plasmid
and you never use then because they're almost all shit

>when it does beat you on the head with something, people STILL don't get it and think there's a plothole
>Implying the game itself isn't a mess of plotholes

>characters have more to them beside the stereotype/cliche they represent
They're walking western cliches

Bioshock Infinite's defense is literally a bunch of redditors
>>
>>379538785
;_;
>>
>>379546151
Slate was in Columbia since the secession, he was Fink's original Security Chief. He is taking his original cavalrymen from Wounded Knee that followed him and Comstock to Columbia and thrashing the Hall of Heroes because he had discovered Lady Comstock's diary and is aware of the lies that Comstock is perpetuating. He's cornered there and wants Booker to give his men the honorable death that Comstock would deny them. It's foreshadowing the ending by contrasting the two but Slate is not aware of the bigger picture.
>>
>>379514349
>What the fuck went so horribly wrong

nothing, it sold millions

as for the gameplay, it's more linear and exploration is now minimal The game is focused on narrative and action, but vigors still allow some combo variety.
A different game is not always a bad thing, BS1 and BS2 did pretty much the same kind of stuff gameplay wise, a third game like that wasn't necessary
>>
>>379546176

>Nigga, even the first Bioshock has better gunplay and Infinite was my first Bioshock,I haven't played 2 yet

not him, but that's retarded, BS1 and BS2 has clunky and sluggish combat while BSI is smooth as fuck and you are way more agile and precise. This is not an opinion, BS1 and 2 sometimes expect you to tank face damage by spamming medikits, that's how retarded it is. Not to mention BS1 has some OP weapons while the rest is trash, while almost everything is viable in BSI when upgraded
>>
>Crows
>Shotgun
>That one piece of gear that electrocutes people when they take a huge amount of damage
The game played itself
>>
>>379521971
>Play bioshock 1/2 on hardest
>It's actually pretty hard

BS1 and BS2 on hard are total cakewalks dude, BSI is way harder on 1999 mode
>>
>>379548290
There's an even funnier set-up where doing damage refills your Salts so you can charge infinitely. Kills Lady Comstock within literal seconds, before she even starts attacking or summoning undead soldiers.
>>
>>379548364
the only thing that made 1999 mode hard was how badly designed the combat is

the AI in BI is pathetic, enemies just stand still wherever they are and take potshots, and the handymen can literally be kited indefinitely, but in 1999 mode they have a shitton of health and you have to deal with the stupidly low ammo count and 2 weapon limit
>>
>>379548653
The gear being random system is retarded though because I got my gamebreaking setup from the 3rd piece of gear I found while other runs I got shit for 90% of the game
>>
>>379548290
>>379548653
you can also cheese the final encounter by covering the generator with return to sender traps
>>
>>379514349
Ken Levine scrapped 80% of the games story and mechanics 6 months prior to release and then procceeded to Make up some quantum theory bullshit that he himself didn't understand and base the new story on it. While also neglecting to have the story follow any rules the setting put in place.
Which is why the ending makes no fucking sense and everything you did was for nothing while the story tells you that you fixed everything.

Ken is a hack.
>>
>>379516118
Consoles were the cause of The story, gameplay, and setting getting butchered and entirely replaced 6 months before release?
I don't buy it.
>>
>>379551049
The Booker is Comstock twist wasn't there before but the multiverse thread was since the very first teaser, it's why it was called Infinite in the first place.
>>
>>379551983
But I'm sure the Drowning Booker thing wasn't and doing so solved nothing since he and that baptism were variables.
>>
>>379548229
>This is not an opinion, BS1 and 2 sometimes expect you to tank face damage by spamming medikits
You are a terrible player if think BS1 and especially 2 ever force you to facetank damage just to survive. You can get through most levels unscathed if you know what to expect and plan accordingly.
>>
>>379514736
>It's more story driven
Then why was the story so shit too?
>>
>>379552382
True
>>
Because the entire game was gutted a few months before release and totally switched around. It's basically an unfinished, unpolished game which explains how little of it fit together well.
>>
>>379553383
Yes, you can even see an ungodly amount of seams and overlapping in the geometry, because it's just kit-bashed tilesets. Not uncommon but there's so much of it that it undermines the art. It's fitting that Columbia is a facade but it should not feel like a literal one.
>>
>>379551049
You did fix everything though. That set of timelines that are related to the events of BI are gone. This is why Burial At Sea has a totally different timeline happening in it.
>>
>>379554420
Yet killing your Booker at the baptism didn't fix the problem the story was talkabout.
It didn't erase comstock from all universes like the story was driving form. Or at least it shouldn't have.
The way to do that is to kill the twin's Parents before they have a child. than dimension and time travel isn't created and comstock exists but we don't get dimension hopping and floating cities.
But what are you going to do. Ken Levine likes feeling dumb so everyone else has to suffer for it.
>>
>>379517404
I like how the bells actually light up when you're in the correct sequence so anyone could easily brute force that shit even without the card
>>
>>379514349
This fucking game.
This is one of the games that made me legitimately start believing there was some global corporate shill media conspiracy between video game companies and the game journalists. This game was fucking shilled to death with such ridiculous praise -- and now? No one fucking remembers it. Because it's mediocre with a 2deep4u story.
Fuck Bioshock.
>>
>>379514349
Why is he so cute, bros?
>>
Nate Wells, the art director for this game, BS1, SS2, SWAT4, Thief and Freedom Force, decided to quit in the middle of development of this game because Levine was George Lucas tier asshole.
He had them work on Shantytown with his own instructions then after months of working on it he saw what they were doing and told them he doesn't want it like that.
Guy ended up working on Naughty Dog's Last of Us instead
