That's not true. The only feature that really matters if you are only playing free games on steam is sending friend invites. You can even accept them just not send them.

Pre-ordered this. Bought all the DLC up to a point. Then the devs decided they would devote themselves to making the playing experience as fucking miserable as humanly possible. And now the game is terrible.
