When it wasn't written by Dan Slott, it was good. When it was, it was bad.

The main problem with the story is that it was both too long, AND too rushed. Superior Spider-Man could have been a six-issue story where Aunt May or Mary Jane quickly realize "Oh shit, that's not Peter. It must be Chameleon or Mysterio impersonating him for the tenth time. I'd better tell The Avengers," and then Captain America, Venom, and The Fantastic Four team up to take down Otto and his army of octo-spider-bots.

Instead, all of Peter's closest friends turned into complete idiots while Otto made no attempt whatsoever to act like Peter so the story could continue on. But we reached a point where Green Goblin found him out, all Spider-Man's allies were pissed at him, and Otto was being faced with challenges that he admitted were too much for him. In any other story, this would be the second act twist, where Otto would then have to develop as a character and become a real hero. Instead, he just switches back to Peter, who was apparently living in his head as a ghost, and the story was just over. And almost everything was as if none of it had ever happened.

It sucked from both ends.

His series had potential at first, but it was written when the Ultimate line was failing, so his story was constantly interrupted for shitty events that no one cared about and ruined everything. Then his character failed to evolve beyond "kindy whiny." Plus, he's completely overpowered in a totally boring way. When your hero can turn invisible and One-Punch absolutely anyone (since said One-Punch attacks their nervous system directly), it's pretty fucking hard to write interesting fights for him.

The Netflix shows do a better job at rounding out the characters. DareDevil and Jessica Jones have one or two quippy moments, but otherwise are fine. Luke Cage and Iron Fist just don't quip, due to either trauma or actual inability to find humor in anything.
