Maybe I'm mad, but for some reason I get the feeling that a lot of these topics aren't ordered correctly in terms of what is basic and what is advanced.
Besides that, I think that after this it's off to the yotsuba reading set for me

Tae Kim is shit. Grinding grammar like that is a poor way to learn a language. Download the Assimil Japanese stuff and use that in addition to whatever other studying you're doing.

I stopped doing Anki over a year ago.
Now I have something like 12000 due reps, I had a pretty large deck.

I'm reading pretty well now and improving just by reading VNs and playing games.
But every now and then, I notice that I have to look up a word that was definitely in my deck.

Anyone here got to a point where he just dropped anki completely? Doing daily reps is really killing my motivation, but I don't know if I won't start forgetting more and more of the uncommon words, or if I'll even be able to learn new words that I meet infrequently without using Anki.
>>
>>379488426
it's just that learning a language is kind of a personal discovery/adventure. If it works for you, it works, but I can't learn shit by looking at flashcards for example. I take my time but I make sure I learn my shit the way it suits me.

Just do what all the polyglots do: learn languages through exposure and assimilation instead of trying to force yourself to autistically memorize grammar rules and vocab cards. If they can learn multiple languages fluently using this method, then they're probably doing something right.

No polyglots actually know a language. They can give the impression of fluency to a moron, but they're vastly lacking in anything but reproduction.

There's a reason they all give up when they get to something like Chinese or Japanese. It actually requires some work, and you can't just wing it and rely on common roots.

I mean you're not wrong, basically what happened to me 2 years ago is that I followed the djt by hearts, went through kana and genki and then started anki grinding cause they told me "you need 2000 minimal kanji to even begin reading". Needless to say I burned out and only recently did I pick it up again. Luckily I retained kana and a bunch of basic Kanji but I never learned to read. So what I thought I'd do this time around is just bumrush through tae kim to learn the basic rules and get the picture, and then jump into reading and watching chinese cartoons.
The only thing I might consider doing in anki now is check out the basic radicals to get a feeling for those.

Is there a single decent reps program out there? Memrise has server-side refreshment timing and actually makes you input the result which is great, but it has a terrible UI for making any items yourself, no way to fix errors in a downloaded course, and every potential answer in multiple choice questions is picked automatically so you can't do something like putting in a bunch of answers with similar radicals where you need to pick out the right one.
Anki is far too simple, you pick the refresher time yourself and all it does is show you the front of the card then you press a button to see the back of a card, and its sync system is awful.

Is there anything like Memrise but better for making your own stuff with?

Because he's fucking living in the country, you absolute retard. He can't speak Chink for shit, and I doubt he's any good at most of the other languages he claims to know.

Immersion is a pretty shit-tier method, but it works eventually if you're lazy and spend several years in a new country. Most people aren't planning on moving to Japan though, so it's kind of a waste of time.

Knowing 3-5 languages isn't that special, the people who will never get past intermediate level are those who pick up a new language every few months.

He doesn't even like in Korea anymore, and even if he did, it wouldn't make a difference for the other languages he knows. Luca Lampariello is another polyglot who advocates the same learning methods and he's fluent in quite a few languages, including distant languages like Japanese. No one is saying "don't study grammar and vocabulary," but ONLY studying grammar and vocabulary is a terrible way to learn a language.

How did you learn to speak as a child? You listened and imitated. You built a network, a foundation for that language, so when you get to the more technical stuff it was easier to understand. You're essentially doing the same thing. Ideally you will use something like Assimil everyday and do some grammar studies on the side, but trying to learn a language through grammar textbooks and vocabulary cards is absolutely one of the worst ways you can go about it.

The dictonary definition of polyglot is "a person who speaks, writes, or reads a number of languages." I think you're overestimating the amount of people who can read and speak 3+ languages. The only countries where 2 or more languages are the standard are a handful of European countries, which speak their own native tongue and become fluent in English through a lifetime of exposure. Most English-dominated parts of the world are home to people who only know English. Most Asian countries have mandatory English lessons in school, but the vast majority of those people never actually learn the language.

To say that "people who know a few languages at a high level are normal people," is a bit off-base.

I passed 15k words on anki like 2 years ago and dropped it for a reason I can't remember. Still forget some words every now and then but I've come to accept it as something that will just happen. Nothing a quick 10 second jp dictionary lookup won't fix. Though I'm thinking of maybe starting up a fresh anki profile and only adding some real uncommon words that I see maybe once a month if I'm lucky. Almost 5 years into jap here, the vocab never ends, only slows down so long as you read new things/explore unfamiliar genres. The sooner you realize this the sooner you can achieve happiness with your progress

Yeah, and it took me fucking YEARS to get a grasp on it, along with constant positive and negative reinforcement.

Given you already know a language, the idea that you should completely ignore that foundation and just guess your way through is dumb.

Nobody is advocating a study method where all you do is read text books and word lists. But literally all you have to do is enjoy the language and all the shit you're sperging out about will come naturally. Giving it a cancer name like "Assimil" just makes you look like a retard.

You could do kanji mining instead.
It's how I supplement my Japanese studies.
Basically, you make your own Anki decks based on words that you didn't know while you consume Japanese media.

Since you're a beginner, I'd stick to kids manga and pokemon.
>>
>>379496645
That's different. But I wouldn't ever recommend taking classes in the west with all the normiefags that hold back progress.

Anki is the easiest way to learn Kanji. Just do it every day and drop it once you know Japanese.

I really hate how Japanese has become this meme language you have to write 20 paragraphs of shit just to justify learning it to strangers on the internet. You never see this much defense required for Spanish or German. Not even other asian languages like Chinese except for maybe Korean. Why the double standard? Are you fuckers that angry that people are actually interested in something that's in the language they're learning? Being an anime obsessed retard and learning Japanese is much better than having no interest in Germany outside of beer and learning German or Spain or Latin America outside of tacos and learning Spanish just to look """""cultured"""""

If you want to be motivated to speak the language, interest yourself in history, actual culture, traditions, mythology, religion, arts, etc... of the country.
Do NOT try to learn the language just because you like manga, animes, games, japanese pop culture, commercial medias, etc...
These are the worst reasons ever, you'll be despised by everyone, japanese people included, and you'll eventually give up because it's not a strong enough reason to go through that hard work.

You'll really get motivated if you know japanese people or have a reason to talk with them, communicate and discover things.
If you're just a weaboo neet browsing memes on the web, watching animes and playing games, you shouldn't try to learn this language.

So, tell us, why do you want to learn Japanese?

Foreigners tend to try and break up Japanese into ranks, as if it gives them some credibility.

I think for me, the problem is I feel most people become complacent after getting to a certain "rank" when in reality, they're no better than a kindergartner.
I'm not trying to degrade you or anyone, just simply stating what I felt when I first started learning the language, because I fell into that stupid game.
I got to N1 and was like "oh fuck yeah, time to relax." But even at N1, you can't read a book without stopping 10 times per page, and you can forget about having any sort of meaningful conversation with anyone.

The way people have tried to split the language up to make it 'easier' for people is really fucked, and leaves people feeling accomplished when in reality, they're hardly better than a 10yo.

Look at this Japanophilic fucking sycophant.

Japanese history? You mean feudalism that went on for half a millennium after feudalism ended in the rest of the world?

Japanese culture? You mean regressive, traditionalist, collectivist, misogynistic (yes, I'm actually using that word) dogma that idolizes hypocrisy in all aspects of life?

Japanese traditions? What am I, a fucking cave man?

Japanese art? You mean like anime/manga, games, media? Surely you're not referring to the hilarious medieval art that is only novel because of how bad it is compared to the rest of the world's art during the same period?

Listen here, you Hitlerjugend ass nationalist motherfucker, Japan is a SHITHOLE country, with SHITHEEL peple that, despite of its wealth and technology, is one of the most regressive and anti-secular nations in the world, like much of Asia. There is NOTHING to respect them for, other than the resounding success of their entertainment industry. Learning Japanese for the Japanese is the WORST thing you can learn Japanese for.

You will NEVER be Japanese or respected by them no matter how much you suck their 2 inch cocks. Reading books on the sengoku period or glorifying the rape of nanking might as well be the same thing as reading loli futa rape incest manga in front of them given how much they'll actually like you as a foreigner in the end. In the words of Malcom X, "What do you call a gaijin with a PhD? A gaijin."

Last time I tried I got halfway through RTK. Far enough to be convinced that the method works, that I can complete it in a reasonable amount of time, and that it's extendable past 2000 kanji. So that takes care of orthography. I figure the vocabulary and grammar shouldn't be difficult after that.
The main thing stopping me is the fact that I'll never be able to master Japanese without actually conversing in it.

Japanese learners are special snowflakes. They want to convince themselves that Japanese shit isn't popular in order to pretend they are doing some underground thing, so the most popular, recognizable things from Japan "don't count".

Japanese would fall apart without Kanji. Unlike English, there are a TON of words that have the same pronunciation, but mean totally separate things. In Japanese, you use Kanji to determine what word you want to use.
>>
>>379501180
It's a perfectly reasonable language, and kanji make plenty of sense in such a homophone-prone language.
>>
>>379500556
Peer pressure? What? I can expand more on my personal issues with it for you if you really want.

Expanding on my previous point, it's just way too slow. I'm sure some would argue "just turn of the romaji and set it to kana or kanji" but that's part of the issue. Even if you set the text to kana or kanji, they don't do a good job of explaining kana, so unless you already know how to read it, you'll be confused by things like "っ". I had to manually look it up after seeing it in so many places and thinking "why is this used as a break in words that I can otherwise read?" This is a problem with Rosetta Stone in general. It's fine for Latin based languages if you can already read Latin script, but learning a new script with their "immersion" based teaching practices alone? Good luck. Also, the voice detection is kind of wonky. I've said things and know I pronounced them wrong, but it still passed me through.

And dude, I know. I was so fucking cocky when I got here, but I couldn't even finish my first year of classes.

Know what helped me the most though? I came here without a computer or phone. Just sitting down with a grammar or vocab book for a couple hours a day helped me out a ton.

We humans always try to take an easy way out, and in this case, it would be to rely on English. Perhaps cutting yourself off would benefit you.

I used to be pretty lazy and just used an OCR to read the jukugo for me, but lately I'm just adding everything I can't read to a special anki deck through rikaisama so I can learn it.

I still cheat with it when I just want a quick fap and always regret it afterwards since I can't remember all the shit I couldn't read.

Keep at it. You WILL get it eventually.
Again, it's a language that millions of other people have learned. You CAN do it, but perhaps the way you're going at it isn't really working?
Try something like saying the kana ten times as you write it down, and then quiz yourself 10 minutes after, or whatever. Shaking it up is totally fine.

Literally not an argument.

Since you're so curious, I didn't actually learn Japanese until after I started working for Honda. They offered me a position where I could make more money, but I had to move to Japan. As such, I had to begin studying the language. I now make more money than I ever did in the UK and my life is all the better for it. My wife (she is English like me, not Japanese) had a bit of trouble adjusting, but overall, she enjoys Japanese life now and we will be raising our child here. The fact that you're thinking with your dick and believe that's all there is to learning a language speaks volumes of your character and maturity levels. Surprised me you aren't advocating for learning Thai since so many sexpats go there due to being absolute failures with women in their own country. America is just about the only country on earth where learning a second language isn't commonplace, so kids aren't learning them when they're young, the easiest time to do so. Copy that with the fact that the NEETs on these boards are trying to learn a language that's fundamentally different from their native tongue without being immersed in it or even in situations where they can practice conversations regularly, using low quality free online sources that unironically tell them to start with grammer, it's no wonder people can't learn languages

You want to know the real reason? Half of them are jaded former weeaboo fucks like the dream crusher english teacher guy that assumes everyone is as stupid as them with unrealistic expectations of Japan. I'm not even joking. The only people that have EVER made fun of me for reading manga or liking Japanese shit in public are people that already knew what it was and had formed an opinion on it from this kind of faggotry. For example, I was reading Eyeshield 21 on the bus one day and this really angry nerd sat next to me and said "Why are you still reading manga, weeb? You know that real Japanese people don't actually like this stuff, right?" I just KNEW he was from /v/ or maybe had watch filthy frank videos with hot opinions like that. The "still" part obviously implies that he did at some point and "outgrew it," so now he has to use the Jehova's Witness tactic of going door to door to spread the light of truth to the uninformed, much like the kid that stopped liking wrestling once he finally realized it was fake and want to let everyone know his shocking revelation that no one saw coming that guys bodyslamming each other was staged.

With good reason. I wouldn't take anyone's opinion if they knew nothing about the subject. At least former weeaboos admitted their favorite medium's problems and decided to quit it before it got worse (as in, your post-levels of worse).

The problem isn't about whether or not they're informed. The problem is that they're doing it at all. I've been made fun of for liking video games by regular people that didn't know much about them plenty of times. (he played Deus Ex? I don't know what that is, but he's probably going to shoot someone for real, LOL.) I've been made fun of for liking TCGs by regular people many times as well. (He plays Magic? Fucking dungeons and dragons nerd!) Meanwhile, regular people don't know/care enough about anime/manga to make insults like that. You might get a pedophilia accusation if you're REALLY lucky, but that's about it.

It's pretty obvious that the guy wasn't trying to help me and was just being an asshole for the sake of it. Even if someone is doing something you personally believe is wrong or bad, if they aren't actually bothering you and you don't even know them, it's actually quite rude to just go up to them and tell them to stop. I despite tobacco use, I better start asking guys to stop chewing snuff whenever I see them doing it in public, I guess.

This is just a problem with native english speakers, as english is a really vague language even compared to one of it's closest relatives: german. If you know already any of the romance languages, learning another one is kind of using similar fomula to construct phrases with different words, words that sometimes share the same meaning across multiple languages. I believe part of this also applies to slavic people learning other slavic languages.

Now, I find russian quite complex with the excessive quantity of declensions it has, but at the end it is just a matter of getting used to think in a different language.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but I write lots of notes in both English and Japanese. I went to a Japanese arcade once and tried to ask a guy something. I don't care around a smartphone or anything like that, so when I was trying to ask him about a certain technique he used, I had to write it down since he couldn't understand my accent when I said ドランカーシェイド and didn't know enough English to understand what I was saying when I just said "Drunkard Shade".

But yeah, I guess it's only really useful when you don't have access to computers or the internet, though I run into those kinds of situations more than you'd imagine.
>>
>>379509526
They should start by learning basic phrases and conversations, which is why immersion is important. Preferably with someone who's got a workable grasp of their language. Having experience with holding conversations in a different language will serve you 10 times better than a rigorous knowledge of the grammar when you're starting out.

Both can mean "one" as well.

There are no rules set in stone when it comes to 'en' and 'ett'. Words that represent humans and animals, plants and trees (with some minor exceptions) usually begin with 'en'.

Words that represent substance, material and mass usually begins with 'ett'.

Source: I'm a Dane, I'd imagine their grammar follows the same sets of rules.

JLPT N5 here. I tried to translate アラジン by the Sex Machineguns (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1hr_du5cs4). Did I mess anything up? Is this song actually a euphemism for masturbation, or am I just misinterpreting words?

少年は手に入れたのだ 魔法のランプ
The boy has a magic lamp (in his hands?)
らくだのこぶの向こう側に 月の明かりが
The moonlight is on the other side of the camel's hump
ベッドの上に横たわり 枕を抱きしめた
I lied down on the bed and hugged the pillow
ヤシの木を登るように まじない唱える
As I climb the palm tree, I miserably yell:

願いかなえたまえよ なでるようにランプを
You have to stroke the lamp to make a wish

アラジン アラジン アラジン こすれ!
Aladdin Aladdin Aladdin, rub!
アラジン アラジン アラジン ランプの魔人
Aladdin Aladdin Aladdin, genie in the lamp

空を飛ぶ絨毯よりも 魔法のランプ
A carpet flying in the sky more magical than the lamp
オアシスはそこにある 手のひらの中で~
Oasis in the palm of your hand

望みかなえたまえよ なでるようにランプを
You can make a wish, hold the lamp so that you can stroke it

アラジン アラジン アラジン こすれ!
Aladdin Aladdin Aladdin, rub!
アラジン アラジン アラジン もっと!
Aladdin Aladdin Aladdin, more!
アラジン アラジン アラジン こすれ!
Aladdin Aladdin Aladdin, rub!

This, pretty much.
Like, there's a channel with a Canadian fuck creaming himself over Chinese cuisine.
He repeats the same phrases all the time and has a basic understanding of what they're trying to tell him... and he's perfectly fine.

It's how you learn to speak a language, rules will only get you so far.
It's also the principle behind the 2000 basic kanji... no one expects you to be able to blend in with just 2000 words, but you'll have enough info to get the gist of what's happening around you and that's what you build upon.

No experience with Japan but a Cuban grill in Florida. She didn't care that I spoke zero Spanish to her zero English. Using her friend to translate she invited me to a party at her house because the bar was closing. She may very well have just been really into white dudes with long hair but I was sketched out they were going to mug me so I just went home.

I wanna go back to Japan at some point, only visted a few times, mainly for the food and fun time talking to nice old people.

Being a foreigner who can talk enough Japanese to make small talk with the little old grandmas who've never talked to a foreign is great fun. They're adorable.
>>
>>379521854
I can't do pronunciation for sounds that don't exist in English. I can't even do something as simple as the Spanish R. Now I just learn enough to get the "at least you tried" look before continuing in English or using Google translate on my phone.
>>
>>379521854
It's not like you're settling down, you're just fucking visiting. If anything, it should be custom to speak English as it is the god damn Lingua franca of the modern world.

A little backwater island with a populace as snarky as the french that simply refuses to speak the language out of principle. Japs are assholes.

>gender

We REALLY have to thank English for that it does not distinguish between gender and genus.
Fucks it up for everyone else, because Femnazis think that all the time the masculine version is used, the feminine version has to be used as well in order to make it fair.
The thing is: The version with masculine genus IS already gender neutral.
"Student", "Bankräuber", "Maurer", etc. make no statement about the gender of the person in question. It's completely gender neutral.
>>
>>379521949
It's good to get the ball rolling. But you're going to need to supplement it with other sorts of study once you get a decent ways in.
>>
>>379522306
Japanese people under about 35 are usually one of two groups, they're either super happy to have an excuse to use it or just really shy because they feel like they're not good enough.

Very few just refuse to try and talk english because they don't wanna.
>>
>>379497980
I've liked their storytelling for a while, probably my whole life if I take into account some old godzillas/peach boy and some picture books

I'd want to learn it if I had any drive tbqh but right now I just spend all day sitting online or some shit I need passion or something but damn

it's frustrating though, I'd never be accepted in Japanese performances even if I was fluent right now, I'd never be accepted in anything but voicework, and I'm a stammering fool when I'm trying to speak my native language. Bums me out just thinking about how delusional I'd be to pursue anything I liked as a kid.
>>
>>379522306
Every time I talk to people from yurop who speak speak like five languages, all of them say the same thing that we don't need to learn another language because everyone else learns English anyway. Very few yuropoors that I've met in America didn't speak passable English. Maybe ten out of hundreds.

If I wanted to learn a useful language I'd practice Spanish, which I am planning on doing eventually anyway. I just think Japanese is a cool sounding language. It'd be nice to learn to speak it well, even if it takes 20 years, and even nicer to show off in front of actual weebs with their basic vocabulary, who flaunt their dicks like God just because they can read kana, and destroy their self-esteem with my superior linguistic comprehension of their precious moonspeak. I'll be the Chad and Tyrone of Japanese.

Trying to learn wapanese at age 34 is fucking torture. Not really 'difficult', just time consuming and slow. Though for some reason grammar just kinda clicks for me, I find japanese sentence structure makes more sense and is more logical than english. Why are the latin-based languages so shit?
>>
>>379525601
Because English is used to explain in detail, whereas Japanese is just cutting all the dull bits off and expecting the other person to comprehend your castrated sentence.

I prefer Germanic languages, cheers.

They don't. Without talking to native speakers daily you'll never be fluent in any language. Textbooks don't teach you dialects and slang.

I don't need to be fluent in anything, as long as I can comprehend what I'm told or read.

I studied mandarin and japanese, 4 and a half years of mandarin and 2 years of japanese. Had to take my japanese classes in uni at the same time as mandarin.

Honestly it's all about persistence. Even stupid people can learn these languages as their native tongue if they just keep doing it for a long enough time. And i'm not particularly smart. I had to brute force memorize a bunch of shit, because i lack natural talent and apptitude. But some of that shit just sticks with.

Tl;dr time +experience = eventual fluency

Why are these thread always filled with Japanese learners telling other people to not learn Japanese? Do you really care if anons you'll never meet are going to waste their time?
