GG's quasi Gothic, hard rock twist on iron punk and 90s anime aesthetics is one of the most original visual design works in games as a medium (although it does borrow a bit from NGE). If you don't like it, that's fine. GG just isn't really your thing. I can't really imagine GG with a "down to earth" visual style and still call it GG.

He's a lot of work sometimes, but he's also a blast to play. Easily the best grappler in fighting games.
I'm a Sol main myself since GG1, but I always switch out my subs. Potemkin is pretty much a permanent consideration for my subs. Currently re-learning May because the last time I subbed her was back in #Reload.

I'm about to buy GG Rev2 and it'll be the first time ever I'll actually try and learn to play fighting games.

Should I buy an arcade stick or just learn with the dualshock4?
Also is there a special way to hold the standard controller? I heard about a different grip with the right hand where you touch the face buttons with you index and middle finger instead of the thumb.

You can play either, I personally prefer a controller because
1. I just really like the feel of the DS4
2. In Blazblue and Guilty Gear I like having the shoulder buttons mapped for various multi-button inputs.
As for character, anybody who interest you. If you are absolute dogshit at inputs you can try out my girl Jack-O as she has basically no execution barrier. The trade off however is dealing with her house mechanic, being able adapt placement and withdrawal of them as needed and being able to react to ghost extending your combos for you.

The biggest problem with Rev 2 is there's no quickplay match. The only quickplay is ranked where everyone plays Sin and cheeses you out.

Pad is totally fine. The game has very little to no disgusting inputs for many chars. There are even some pad players who play who I'd consider pad unfriendly characters, like Beautifuldude with Zato for instance.

And who to play is literally up to you. I'd recommend to play anyone you like, since whoever ou pick, you will be playing him sub-optimally and will have the learn his combos the same time you learn the game.
Tho, if you pick Raven, Sin, Axl, Faust, Leo and May, you can be dangerous really fast without hitting some big optimization.
