Not mechanics but themes at the very least. Game is about a Pict woman fighting northmen who killed her husband and sacked her village who is also probably borderline schizophrenic, thinking all the invaders are literal monsters.

I think that might be their problem though. Looks to me like they invest way too much time and money into their art so the rest of the game is missing substance. Also, since they spend all those resources into creating those assets they kinda have to make sure the player sees them all, making the whole experience very railroadish.

Doing something that's both or neither of those things could be considered ambitious. I'd like to see more of that.
But what would that look like? I don't really know.
If a game is linear, as Hellblade looks to be, that won't matter. It's clearly very story driven, and a game that leans heavily on story needs to be linear or it loses the majority of its impact.
