The reason is open morrowind will be open source so you aren't limited by the editor. You could change combat with no limitations and many other things.

The why? Why do people paint, do carpentry, or whatever else? Not all leisure activity means sitting around watching TV or it's a "waste of time.

Are the people that follow 20 TV shows having more meaningful of a time than someone modding games?

Because it would increase modability so much because the whole engine is open source meaning a modder can just straight up replace things that weren't previously able to do.

And it's unfinished because it's a WIP meaning that it's still being worked on. There's plenty of mods that have taken forever to complete and they've released playable proof that the mod is going beyond concept.

There's nothing to C&D though. It's literally just clean room reverse engineered code that loads assets and tries to behave in a way similar to Morrowind.

As to why they're doing it?
- It allows for ports of morrowind to many platforms, such as android and linux
-Limitations of the original engine are essentially eliminated
-New content creation and modding is both backwards compatible and extensible, making it easy to mix legacy mods with ones that use OpenMW enhancements
-The game engine can be threaded
-Running the legacy morrowind engine with tons of mods is extremely buggy. My morrowind playthrough a few years ago crashed hundreds of times. OpenMW is far more stable.

I'm sure people deeper into the project could add a bunch more reasons, but that's my casual assessment of things.

It's a shame really, I wish Bethesda would release the source codes for Arena and Daggerfall already since it's not going to be commercially used anymore and there's probably not going to be a lot of 3rd party software associated with it like Speedtree etc.

Not going to hold my breath but I wish Arena + Daggerfall would get the Chocolate Doom treatment.
